INTRODUCTION
Student-Led School Watching and Hazard Mapping aims to instruct all public
elementary and secondary schools in the specific engagement of learners in
identifying and addressing hazards and risks. Pursuant to the enclosed DepEd Order
No. 23, s. 2015 entitled Student-led School Watching and Hazard Mapping, the
Department of Education (DepEd), through the Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Service (DRRMS), reiterates the implementing guidelines stipulated in
the aforementioned Order in all schools at elementary and secondary levels effective
School Year (SY) 2016-2017. All schools are required to perform the activity within
the first month of the school opening of the current SY.
The School is a densely populated place and has children that are one of the most
vulnerable groups in the society. To reduce this vulnerability particularly for schools,
it is important to have a school Disaster Management Plan. Schools also have many
resources and are always have closed association with the community. Therefore, a
School also has responsibility towards its immediate locality, just as the neighboring
community is linked to the school.
The aim of emergency planning is to ensure that the safety of the students
and the staff is maintained during an emergency. The emergency management plan
is a means by which this can be achieved.
The APLAYA National High School has already looked on the following:
A. STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Members of the SWT have evaluated the school and accomplished the
following:
SWT also attended various meetings and trainings (e.g. MERALCO, First Aid,
Boy Scouts DRRM Training). They also played an important role during
earthquake and fire drills.
All members of the SDRRMG and the teachers of Aplaya National High
School conducted building watching exercise and identify safe and unsafe spots
inside the school grounds. This is necessary for stressing the do’s and don’ts.
B. STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
Earthquake drills and exercises are an extremely important part of our preparedness
plan because they 1) teach students, and staff how to respond to the complications
of an actual earthquake, and 2) help you evaluate how well all parts of your
emergency plan work together, and how well your staff and students have been
trained.
SWT visited each classroom for lecture on earthquakes and explained to the
students the “Six Phases of an Earthquake Drill’. Students learned the importance of
having an emergency plan and earthquake preparedness plan. They accumulated
awareness and realized the essence of having an earthquake drill.
