THE COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING APPROACH AS A
TOOL TO IMPROVE STUDENTS´ ORAL SKILLS IN SCHOOLS AND
COLLEGES IN ECUADOR

Since the beginning of time, the human being has been in need of
communicating with other people, trying to improve every day the skills that are:
writing, reading, listening and speaking. We are in a world where more and more
people need to learn English. IT is the language people speak in practically all
countries, whether for visiting, economic or personas reasons. Many people have
had the idea of being self-taught, something very difficult for learning, other
people have turned to academies where the English language is taught where the
four skills are put into practice, but not only academies but also schools and high
schools. But they have encountered problems for language learning. Many
teachers emphasize listening, reading and writing, leaving aside the speaking a lot,
for lack of time or for lack of an approach to teaching English.
Education is the fundamental piece in the development of society, so it
deserves special attention in terms of the constant search for approaches that allow
the teachers to encourage and stimulate the learning of the student in his/her work
environment. There are different methods and strategies that the Teachers use for
teaching English as a foreign language but not all of them are as effective at the
time of using them, since it is necessary to make a brief diagnosis of the group to
determine which is the best approach and strategy to apply to avoid bad results in
language production by students.

According to The study conducted by Calle, Calle, Argudo, Moscoso, Smith,

and Cabrera (2012), “They indicates that the strategies teachers use in the English
classroom are based on traditional methods that do not focus on the
Communicative Language Teaching approach as it isestablished by the Ministry
of Education and Culture of Ecuador”.

Many of the teachers focus on speaking the whole class in English, forgetting
that the protagonists are the students and that they are the ones who must speak
English more than the teacher, in another context we find the teachers who speak
only in Spanish what It limits the student to contact with the language they want
To learn, considering that there must be a balance, using the appropriate approach
and strategy depending on the context presented, also another problem could be
the time limit that teachers and students have to achieve communicative
competence.

According to the results obtained by the British Council (2015), “English

learners in Ecuador show more confidence at the time of reading and writing but
they do not have much confidence in speaking. English learners consider speaking
harder than writing and reading and the only contact they have with the language
is in classes, besides that, they do not count on teachers who use appropriate
strategies to encourage them to produce the language”.

The Communicative Language Teaching Approach It is responsible for

teaching the language by focusing more on the oral part through various
strategies, avoiding learning it in a mechanical way and in a more fun way,
making the institutions benefit from the final result and improving the teaching-
learning process.
