WEATHER ACROSS THE

CONTINENTS

Continents are generally understood as huge masses of land separated by

expanses of water. Continents could be extended beyond the major
landmasses in order to include every piece of land on the earth’s surface in
one of the seven continents.

Without going into the detail of its definition, in this article we will analyze
weather conditions across the continents.

From largest to smallest in size the continents across the globe are: Asia,
Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.

Asia

A diverse climatic condition throughout the year in Asia could be attributed

to its location on the globe. The southeast area remains moist whereas the
interior generally stays dry. The western part of Asia is known to have
extremely high temperature while monsoons are seen in eastern and
southern areas because of the Himalayas. Siberia being the coldest place in
Northern hemisphere leads to the formation of arctic air masses for North
America. Southwest section of Asia remains hot and experiences the highest
number tropical cyclones somewhere in between Philippines and Japan.

Weather in Delhi- In India, winter has set in. At present, maximum and
minimum in the capital city Delhi are hovering around 25°C and 18°C,
respectively. Clear skies and low humidity levels suggest absence of rain in
the offing.

Weather in Moscow- Moscow in Russia is shivering under freezing

temperatures. Maximum here is -2°C while minimum is -7°C. A generally
clear weather and low humidity levels is the forecast for next few days.

 Africa

Africa is not much a favorite among travelers because of its killing dryness
and flooding rains. East Africa witnesses dry weather conditions from
December to February/March and again from June to October. Rainy season
is observed in between these two periods. In West Africa, the dry season
starts from October/November and stays till April/May. Moving towards
southern Africa, it is hot from May to October and experiences rainfall from
November to April. It is a good time to visit this continent during the cooler
days i.e. from October to March.

Weather in Cape Town- Presently, day and night temperatures in the city
are 23°C and 14°C. Weather is warm and moist as it lies in the Southern
Hemisphere.

Weather in Cairo- The range of day and night temperature is hovering

between 26°C and 16°C.  Cairo is also experiencing warm and humid
summer days.

 North America

North America is the third largest continent in the world. It stretches

between equator and the North Pole and thus, hosting a varied time table of
weather. It offers diverse climatic zones including ice packed Greenland, hot
savanna and tropical rain forests. The interior regions are crafted by desert
and semi-arid climate cut off by westerly winds moving over the high
mountains. North Alaska and north Canada experience sub-arctic climate.
Generally, a temperate climate prevails in most of the region making this
continent good for agriculture and living.

Weather in Washington, D.C.- Washington, D.C. is the capital of the

United States. Minimum temperature has reached -5°C while maximum is at
0°C. A clear weather could be interrupted by patches of rain.

Weather in New York- Similar conditions in New York with maximum and
minimum at -1°C and -6°C, respectively.

 South America

South America is a large continent influenced by ocean currents and winds.

Hence, variation in climate is large but, generally it is hot and wet. On one
hand, Amazon basin remains hot and wet with temperatures around 20°C to
30°C, whereas the Andes remain cold throughout the year. Gran Chaco in
Argentina is said to have recorded the highest temperature of 43°C, in South
America. And, Quibdo in Columbia is the wettest part with annual rainfall of
about 350 inches.

Weather in Sao Paulo- Itis the largest city in Brazil and also South
America. Maximum here at present is 24°C while minimum is 14°C. Warm
and humid conditions are likely to prevail in the city for next few days.

Weather in Buenos – Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of

Argentina. It is also the second-largest metropolitan city in South America,
after Sao Paulo. Presently, day and night temperatures in the city are 30°C
and 22°C.

 Antarctica

Antarctica is not in the love list of tourists but this exotic place has a lot to
offer. During winters, the continent is packed with ice resulting in extreme
cold and round-the-clock darkness. November witnesses sunlight with warm
summer season when ice bricks start melting and birds like penguins come
out for courting and mating. Austral summer is experienced in December
and January with 20 hours of sunlight.

Europe

Europe has extremes of hot and cold season. June to August, the continent
seems to be busy tourists making the warm place even hotter. France and
Italy are some of the few countries, which are almost dead and silent during
August as most people are out for vacations.

During December, places like Prague or Paris seem to be buy with Easter
eggs, Christmas market and New Year parties. Scotland, Switzerland,
Scandinavia are some beautiful places to visit in winter and enjoy the chilling
snowfalls. Visiting summer destinations like Greece in winter can help you
shop costly things at cheaper prices. May, June and September are the best
months to visit Europe.

Weather in London- London is in thick of winters with maximum and

minimum at -5°C and -11°C. Cloudy skies with snowfall seem the order of the
day.

Weather in Venice- Venice generally witness milder winters as it is closer

to the equator. Day temperature is hovering around 13°C and minimum
around 7°C.

 Australia

Australia features a moderate climatic variation but sometimes may witness

drastic changes. Towards the north is the monsoon belt which experiences
limited seasonal change i.e. hot and dry and hot and wet. Here, the dry
season is observed from April to September whereas the wet season stays
from October to March. On the other hand, the southern part of continent
sees cold winters and pleasant or warm summers which might get hot
sometimes. The central area is often hot during day but chilly cold at night.

Weather in Sydney- Located on Australia's southeast coast along the

Tasman Sea, Sydney is the financial capital of the country. With partly cloudy
skies, maximum and minimum are hovering around 25°C and 18°C,
respectively.

Weather in Perth- November is early summers for Australia. Maximum in

Perth is 24°C while minimum is 14°C. Intermittent rain cannot be ruled out
as well.

The areas most hit by typhoons in the Philippines are due to interplay of different factors.

Generally hit areas are mostly from Luzon and Visayas, while Mindanao doesn't get much of
it. Though the full reason is yet to be determined, here is my theory about it.

The country is within the world's typhoon belt. Due to the inter tropical convergence zone,
low pressure areas always occur on the pacific ocean and develop into typhoons. Hot air
from the ocean evaporates and condenses into thunderclouds and forms into storms or
typhoons.
Now, winds in the area of the world from 0° longitude to 30° longitude have winds that
move from north to east due to the Coriolis effect on the Earth's rotation. And the
Philippines is located 14° longitude. So the country is affected by it.

Due again to the Coriolis effect, hot air doesn't go directly from the outside to the eye of a
storm in a straight line. Like this,

Rather, it spins and curves in a counterclockwise direction. Like this,

As the typhoon or storm condenses enough air, it gains momentum and starts to move.

Now, in the process of travelling, it follows the direction of the trade winds. But since the
trade winds travel from north to east, instead of it acting like a straight road for the storm to
just follow, it acts like a stairs for the typhoon to climb. Because the storm’s spin is
necessarily faster, it climbs the trade winds and goes against the current, depending on the
circumstances.

Kind of like this,

Now, applying this scenario, the situation would closely resemble this.

My proof for this explanation is that, based on experience and observation, the path of the
typhoon always moves from west, on the Pacific Ocean, to either east to northeast, Vietnam
or China, or northward, to the southern area of Japan. But unlikely to reach as far as
Hokkaido.

Another factor that can affect is that, the western part of Mindanao is affected by ITCZ.
Northern and southern trade winds collide in these areas. They produce their own
thunderstorms or areas of no winds which can also deter the typhoons path.
