Introduction

Dating has really changed since 1995 where the first online dating website . match.com

was established. (History of Internet, n.d.). Some dating website even provided specification for

group, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and preference. Adopting to innovation began a new way of

dating, use of online dating application. Among the most known application were Tinder and

Bumble. Tinder having almost about 50 million users worldwide and 1.8 million premium users.

Bumble, the newer dating application, has about 3.5 million users that are active. It is clear that

these two dating application have dominated the industry of dating application (Weller, 2017).

Online dating application is still innovating and changing to meet the demands of users,

changing the way people pursue dating. What drives the people who uses these kind of

applications were truly captivating. Truly, online dating “has fundamentally changed the process

of finding romance” (James, 2015, p. 1).

In addition to this, according to OutrageMag.com (2017), half of the Filipinos have

admitted to use online dating applications, which would rise around 56% among Millennials.

However, 41% of the Millennials would be embarrassed to admit they have used dating

application. Tinder with 71% popularity is the most used application by Filipinos.

In contrast to the popularization of the use of online dating application were its negative

effects. More often than not, relationship established from using online dating application rarely

last and are only for short-term (Anderson, 2016). Anderson even listed 5 things that causes the

downfall of using online dating apps:

1. Most of the people lie on their profile in order to make themselves more likeable.
2. Looking for real relationship is not the priority; often, people are just looking for hook-

ups and sexual pleasure.

3. Makes people vulnerable to online scamming and conmen.

4. Relationships don’t (usually) last.

5. It makes users picky and judgmental.

Furthermore, the use of online dating application, along with lack of education is being

correlated to the rising rate of HIV victims. Most people interviewed admitted to using dating

applications such as Tinder, Grindr, Bumble, etc. Even though the use of online dating

application allowed users to meet new people online, it also made them vulnerable to the risk of

being infected, especially those who use the dating application for sexual pleasures and

activities.

In summary, although online dating application made it easier for users to meet people

and look for possible relationship partner online, it also endangers people using it. These

applications also allows the users, themselves, to take advantage of the application. Thus, the

researchers wanted to study and analyze the perspectives and motives of online dating

application users with the use of Categorical Imperative Theory. These were the questions the

researchers aimed to answer:

1. What are the perspectives of the respondents?

2. What are the motives of the respondents?

3. What are the analyzations of the respondents' perspectives and motives with the

use of Categorical Imperative Theory?
