Political Socialization
The education of the young on politics and the government is called political
socialization. I did not have much of a spark of interest in politics growing up. Race did
not affect me because I did not face racism, being that I lived in and all white
community. Religion also does not affect my political views because I am not religious.
The factors that affected my political socialization were my family, schooling, and mass
media.
Growing up my family did not talk to me that much about politics so my
knowledge is very little. Sometimes I would hear my uncles and my grandparents talk
about politics but I did not care much to listen to because I had my cousins as well as
toys to play with. My Dad is Republican with some conservative views but he does not
really agree with everything that they believe. My dad would always talk to me about his
views and what he believed was right but the conversation was not in a political scene.
In elementary school the first political memory I had was from 1st. Grade
and it was when the 2008 election was going on. All the kids would go around asking
each other who they and their parents were voting for. When anyone would ask me I
would tell them “I don’t know and I don’t care because it has nothing to do with me.”.
Some years the teachers would try to get us to remember all the presidents also they
would teach us about the political parties but none of that sparked an interest to me. My
grandfather would always tell me he would pay me If I can name all the presidents and
know which order they came in. In spite of his efforts I still did not try to learn anything
about politics, not even for money.
Mass media is most likely where anyone would see the most about what is going
on in the political world. Newspapers and news channels are filled with all different
types of political participation and events. When elections are going on that is all you
hear about in the news. The older I get the more I hear about political events that are
going on in the world.
According to the typology quiz that I took I am next generation left. I am
not sure how accurate the results are because I feel as if the answers that were
given were not specific enough and did not have that much of a variety of
choices to choose from. But these are all of the ways I learned about politics
-from my family, schooling, and mass media. I hope that throughout the course of
this class I will have more knowledge of politics and have better political views.
