GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION

Phonetics & Phonology I is the second formal course in the field of Phonetics and Phonology of the national teacher
programme.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
• to acquaint students with theory and practice of English Phonetics and Phonology
• to get rid of Uruguayan-to-English phonetics interference,
• to build students’ awareness and concern for good pronunciation,
• to draw students’ attention to the problem areas faced by Uruguayan learners of English,
• to provide the students with necessary knowledge to be able to self-evaluate their own pronunciation and correct
and assess the pronunciation of others,
• to analyse a personal diagnostic speech sample in consultation with the instructor and to develop a personal plan for
improvement targeting at specific areas of difficulty.

This course is intended to offer student-teachers the possibility of deepening their understanding of pronunciation and
communication skills, the issues involved in this processes that go beyond the mere classroom situation

COURSE ASSESSMENT
Students who finish the year with grade 6 or more will pass the course. Those who do not reach such level
will have to take an exam.

To pass the course students will have to:


(1) Sit two term-tests one in June or July and the other one in October;
(2) Do well in their oral presentations and classroom communication.
(3) Have an active role in class discussions and reading of the course literature;
(4) Adequately comply with all homework assignments;
(5) Show some noticeable improvement in their pronunciation skill.
(6) Perform well in all revision quizzes/tests throughout the year.

The many assessment opportunities will weigh as follows:


• Term tests 40%
• Oral Presentations 30%
• Involvement in class discussions & homework 30%

Marks will be awarded based on the following criteria:

12–(96% - 100%) – Student’s knowledge and understanding of course


requirements exceeds
expectations.

11 – (92% - 95%) Outstandingly shows knowledge and understanding of course


requirements
10 – (88% - 91%) – Distinctively well shows knowledge and understanding of course
requirements
9 – (84% - 87%) Very well shows knowledge and understanding of course
requirements.
8 – (79% - 83%) – Well shows knowledge and understanding of course
requirements.

7 – (70% - 78%) – Satisfactorily shows knowledge and understanding of course


requirements.

6 – (60% - 69%) – Acceptably shows knowledge and understanding of course


requirements
5 – (50% - 59%) – Barely shows knowledge and understanding of basic course
requirements.

4 – (40% - 49%) – Shows some knowledge of the course.

3 – (30% - 39%) Shows poor knowledge and of the course requirements.

2 (20% - 29%) – Shows insufficient knowledge of the course.


1 – (0% - 19%) Shows neither understanding nor knowledge of the course
requirement
