There are many places where the story of Les Miserables unfolds but all are stages
within France, first we know Toulon, the prison where Valjean was for 19 years, the
second place is the house of a bishop in Digne, the third is Montreuil, in where the
character begins to develop, after his escape the whole story focuses on Paris
The story develops after the events of the French Revolution, when the situation of
people in France was very bad, especially the poor who did not have to eat.
The French Revolution began with the assault on the Bastille in 1789. The main
events of Miserables take place in 1832. A different century two years after the
revolution of July, the monarchy post of Orléans on the throne, under Louis-Philippe.
The complications in the story are that javert persecutes Jean Valjean, the
revolution, poverty and hunger.
The point of view in the story is told from the perspective of an omniscient one. The
narrator knows what the characters think at all times and what happened to them
before the story was told.
Principal characters:
Fantine: is a working class girl who leaves her home town to seek her fortune in
Paris and is the mother of Cosette.
Jean Valjean: is an ex-convict and Cosette´s adopter father. He was sent to prison
for stealing a loaf of bread for hungry child.
Cosette: Orphaned girl adopted by Valjean. Smitten with young rebel, marius. she
goes through dramatic changes, compared other character.
Javert: is a police inspector who strictly believes in law and order. He purses Valjean
tirelessly hoping to take the ex-convict to justice
