CUCUMBER

Cucumber or pipino, botanically known as

Cucumis sativus L. is a warm season crop. Analysis
of the fruit shows that it is low in nutrient value
and little vitamin A but it is a good source of iron,
calcium, and vitamins B and C.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENT

It thrives well at a day temperature of 25 to

35 C and an optimum night temperature of 18 to
0

24oC. A moderate supply of well distributed rainfall is

necessary for maximum growth and yield. Sunlight is
needed during its growing season. High temperature
associated with high humidity are ideal for the growth
and spread of cucumber diseases.

SITE SELECTION AND SOIL TYPE

Cucumbers are grown on a very wide variety

of soils but it grows best on a well-drained, fertile,
sandy loam soil, or clay loam soil. The pH requirement
ranges from 5.5 to 6.5.

LAND PREPARATION

Prepare the field thoroughly by plowing and harrowing the field twice. Prepare furrows
2-3 meters apart and 50-60 centimeters between hills.

SYSTEM OF PLANTING

Apply 500 grams of organic fertilizer per hill. Plant 2 seeds per hole and cover with fine
soil. Irrigate in between plots after planting. Be sure that the water reaches the ridges of the
plot where the seeds are planted.

IRRIGATION

Irrigate the field once a week. During the dry season, the plants need sufficient amount
of water. During wet season, irrigate the field when needed. Provide adequate drainage to avoid
waterlogging.
TRELLISING

About 12 days after transplanting, the plants may crawl or creep on

the ground. The use of bamboo and G. I. wires or any materials as trellis
will give better quality fruits that are clean and without deformity.

TRAINING OF VINES AND WEEDING

Train the vines everyday by tying the vines to the

trellis. Spot weeding should be done at 14 days after
emergence.

PRUNING

To improve yield, remove lateral branches until the runner reaches the top of the trellis.
Removal of lateral branches in the first 10 nodes has a positive effect on the yield.

HARVESTING

First harvesting is expected at 35 days after emergence. Harvest

every other day or when necessary. Remove all deformed fruits to
