CRITICAL ROTARY
Date: May 27, 2020 SPEEDS

Drill strings because of their rotations vibrate in the same manner as a pendulum on a
string (axial type) and also as a string on a violin (nodal type). Either may cause early
failure pipe through the phenomena of fatigue failure or by the abrasive wear of the con-
tact speeds for nodal type of vibration given by the equation below. Inaccuracies may
be as much as 15% for ideal situations. These inaccuracies occur because of bore hole
size, drill collar weight, bit weight, bore hole friction, doglegs, and well bore inclination.

Nn = 33056 x (D² + d²).5 / S²

Where . . . .
Nn = nodal type critical rotary speed, rpm
D = outside diameter of drill pipe, inches
d = inside diameter of drill pipe, inches
S = length of one joint of pipe between tool joints, feet
