Renault has revealed its latest Trafic light commercial van, which is
a popular base vehicle among campervan manufacturers. It has also

A
fortnight after buying my dream camper, I was
devastated after said ‘van, named Dave, broke down
and we were separated while he spent four months
in a garage waiting for parts from Japan. It was
spring 2018 by the time we were reunited.
I've always loved the seaside, so I set off with high hopes
to the west coast in gorgeous sunshine. As usual, I had no
particular plan of where I was going or where I would stay.
I meandered through the Forest of Bowland from
Clitheroe up to Morecambe then on to Bolton-le-Sands
near Carnforth, where I found a small campsite.
And finally, one of my dreams came true: to be able to
lie in a campervan and see the stars through the glass roof.
That was extraordinary and actually made me cry! I was
close to tears again after spending a bitterly cold and
wakeful night, having been woefully unprepared for the
drop in temperature. My sleeping arrangements were
pathetic – the mattress deflated and I slept fitfully on
the hard base, being poked by seatbelt holders!
A month later I tried again, this time on the east coast.
Living near Leeds, it's not long before you can get out into
glorious countryside and I was full of the joys of life as
Dave and I trekked past York, up to Malton, through
Pickering and into Whitby. I carried on up the coast
roads past Sandsend, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and finally to
Marske-by-the-Sea where, according to the Park4Night Alamy.com
app, I could wild camp. Wonderful. I was able to indulge in

Nothing really mattress
Undeterred, I set off the following month to
a v-dub event in Newark. After an afternoon
wandering around the stalls, chatting to the
only other Subaru Sambar owner there, and
dodging heavy thunderstorms, I set off to
find a campsite and ended up at Birchwood
Caravan Park at Whatstandwell (what a great
name!) By this time, I had figured out that the
seats in the ‘van actually folded down to
create a sort of bed. Maybe I didn't need a
mattress after all, I thought. It turned out I did
and I spent another uncomfortable night...

Home time
It was now time to head for our ferry back to Denmark
from Langesund – takes about 4 and a half hours. A good
crossing later, we were travelling down the west coast of
Jutland. The coastal scenery was so different, very flat with
just a few holiday resorts. But we did find an interesting
thatched bird hide looking out onto a waterfowl reserve.
A few more campsites saw us crossing the Elbe again in
Germany and heading for Apeldoorn in Holland for a few
days. We were able to cycle into the town on their
wonderful cycle tracks and do our last bits of shopping.
From there we had about a two-hour journey, calling at
Delft – one of our favourite Dutch towns before travelling
to the Hook for our ferry back to England.
This must be one of our most enjoyable and exciting
holidays, with the most fantastic scenery and lovely
people. Our campervan did very well, and most things
went to plan. The important thing being that we achieved
what we set out to do.

one would assume that, if one were physically capable of
