Objective of the Course:
Protecting life, liberty and property interest of individual and institutions is the primary
function of state and thereby of law. Criminal law is generally founded on this very premise.
However, it is generally stated that the primary objective of the criminal law is to maintain
law and order and award justice to the victim. For all these reasons criminal has to be
balanced. It cannot afford to be weak, ambiguous or ineffective. Nor it can be harsh arbitrary
in its impact.
The subject of Crime and Punishment-I is designed to generate critical thinking among
the students about the stated objectives of criminal law and enable them to scrutinize the
recent development and changes that have taken place in the field. The primary objectives of
this paper are:
a) To familiarize students with the key concepts regarding substantive criminal law,
b) To expose students to the range of mental elements that constitutesmens-rea a
constituent element of crime.
c) To familiarize students with specific offences under the Indian Penal Code.
d) To keep students abreast of the latest developments and changes in the field of
criminal law.
