Morning Prayer

Thursday 28th May 2020

Taken from Celebrating Common Prayer

THE PREPARATION

O Lord, open our lips;

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

From the rising of the sun to its setting

Your glory is proclaimed in all the world.

Glory be to the father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen

Alleluia!

THE OPENING CANTICLE: A SONG OF GOD’S BLESSING

1 May God be merciful to us and bless us,*

show us the light of his countenance
   and come to us.
2 Let your ways be known upon earth,*
your saving health among all nations.
3 Let the peoples praise you, O God;*
let all the peoples praise you.
4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,*
for you judge the peoples with equity
   and guide all the nations upon earth.
5 Let the peoples praise you, O God;*
let all the peoples praise you.
6 The earth has brought forth her increase;*
may God, our own God, give us his blessing.
7 May God give us his blessing,*
and may all the ends of the earth
   stand in awe of him.
Psalm 67

Glory be to the father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen

A HYMN may be sung.

THE OPENING PRAYER may be said.

The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind:
(Silence may be kept)

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,

so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

THE PSALMODY - Psalm 115

Not to us, LORD, not to us

    but to your name be the glory,
    because of your love and faithfulness.

Why do the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”

Our God is in heaven;
    he does whatever pleases him.

But their idols are silver and gold,
    made by human hands.

They have mouths, but cannot speak,
    eyes, but cannot see.

They have ears, but cannot hear,
    noses, but cannot smell.

They have hands, but cannot feel,
    feet, but cannot walk,
    nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.

All you Israelites, trust in the LORD—
    he is their help and shield.
10
House of Aaron, trust in the LORD—
    he is their help and shield.
11
You who fear him, trust in the LORD—
    he is their help and shield.
12
The LORD remembers us and will bless us:
    He will bless his people Israel,
    he will bless the house of Aaron,
13
he will bless those who fear the LORD—
    small and great alike.
14
May the LORD cause you to flourish,
    both you and your children.
15
May you be blessed by the LORD,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.
16
The highest heavens belong to the LORD,
    but the earth he has given to mankind.
17
It is not the dead who praise the LORD,
    those who go down to the place of silence;
18
it is we who extol the LORD,
    both now and forevermore.

Praise the LORD.

Each psalm, or group of psalms, may end with:

Glory be to the father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen

THE SECOND CANTICLE:

A SONG OF THE NEW JERUSALEM (15)

Refrain: Nations will come to your light,*

and kings to your dawning brightness.
1 Arise, shine out, for your light has come,*
the glory of the Lord is rising upon you.
2 Though night still covers the earth,*
and darkness the peoples;
3 Above you the Holy One arises,*
and above you God’s glory appears.
4 The nations will come to your light,*
and kings to your dawning brightness.
5 Your gates will lie open continually;*
shut neither by day nor by night.
6 The sound of violence
   shall be heard no longer in your land,*
or ruin and devastation within your borders.
7 You will call your walls, Salvation,*
and your gates, Praise.
8 No more will the sun give you daylight,*
nor moonlight shine upon you;
9 But the Lord will be your everlasting light,*
your God will be your splendour.
10 For you shall be called the city of God,*
the dwelling of the Holy One of Israel.
From Isaiah 60
Glory be to the father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen

THE SCRIPTURE READING(S)

26
They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.
27
When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the
town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived
in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the
top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg
you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of
the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot
and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon
into solitary places.
30
Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
31
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged
Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
32
A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus
to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons
came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep
bank into the lake and was drowned.
34
When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported
this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had
happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons
had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were
afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had
been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to
leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
38
The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus
sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.”
So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

A RESPONSORY may be said.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,

Let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

Tell it out among the nations that the Lord is King,

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

God’s salvation has been openly shown to all people.

Let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

Declare his glory among the nations

   and his wonders among all peoples.
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,
   let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: BENEDICTUS (38)

Refrain: We are free to worship God without fear;*
holy and righteous all the days of our life.
1 Blessèd be the Lord, the God of Israel,*
for he has come to his people and set them free.
2 He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour,*
born of the house of his servant, David.
3 Through his holy prophets, he promised of old*
that he would save us from our enemies,
   from the hands of all that hate us;
4 He promised to show mercy to our forebears,*
and to remember his holy covenant.
5 This was the oath he swore to our father, Abraham,*
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
6 Free to worship him without fear,*
holy and righteous in his sight,
    all the days of our life.
7 You, my child,
    shall be called the prophet of the Most High,*
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
8 To give his people knowledge of salvation*
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
9 In the tender compassion of our God*
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
    and the shadow of death,*
and to guide our feet into the way of peace
Refrain: We are free to worship God without fear;*
holy and righteous all the days of our life.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES may be used as responses to intercession (and see pages 249 to
263).

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

THE COLLECT of the day, or one of the following.

Lord our God,

who anointed your only Son
with the Spirit at the river Jordan,
and so hallowed the waters of new birth
to bring us forth to salvation:
keep us strong in the life of grace,
direct the ways of your people,
and open the door of your Kingdom
to all who stand upon the threshold of faith;
through Jesus our Messiah and Saviour . . . 28

THE LORD’S PRAYER may be said.

[Let us pray for the unity of all peoples on earth,

in the words our Saviour has taught us:]

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
   who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
[For thine is the kingdom,
   the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.] Amen.
