a) The three-dimensional truss shown in the figure below is made of steel (E = 29 x 106 Ib/
in2). The cross-sectional area of each member is 3.093 in2 .Cartesian coordinates of the
joints with respect to the coordinate system are given in feet. Determine the deflection of
each joint, stress in each member and reaction forces.
b) During a maintenance process on the three-dimensional truss in part (a), the member AB
is replaced with a member with the following properties: E = 28 x 106 Ib/ in2 and A=
2.246 in2. Determine the deflection of each joint, stress in each member and reaction
forces for this new configuration and compare the results with those obtained in part (a).

4. Modeling – Create – Nodes– In Active CS - Node Number 1, Location in active CS X=0,

Node 4, Node 5 -- Ok –DOFs to be constrained – All DOF– Ok.

9. Loads – Define loads – Apply – Structural – Force/Moment – on Nodes - pick Node 1 &
Node 2 – Ok – direction of For/Mom – FY – Force/Moment value – 250 (-ve value) –
Ok.
10. Loads – Define loads – Apply – Structural – Force/Moment – on Nodes - pick Node 1 &
Node 2 – Ok – direction of For/Mom – FZ – Force/Moment value – 150 (-ve value) – Ok.

The procedure is same as that in part (a) except we need to define a second set of real constants
and a second material model.

2. Material Properties – material models – Material – New Model - Define Material ID 2-


Ok, Structural – Linear – Elastic – Isotropic – EX – 28e6 –PRXY – 0.3- Ok - Close

3. Modeling- Delete – Elements—Pick Element (member AB) to delete -- Ok

4. Modeling- Create – Elements – Element Attributes – Select Material No. 2 – Select Real
Constants Set No. 2 – Ok

5. Modeling- Create – Elements – Auto Numbered - Thru Nodes- create element (member
AB) by picking respective nodes as given in figure 1.
6. Save_DB and solve the model again.

7. For post-processing follow the same steps as given in part (a).

Instructions for Preparation of Lab. Report

1. Write down all the steps for performing finite element analysis of truss along with screen
shots of ANSYS.

2. Draw tables to compare the following results:

 Joint deformations in part (a) and part (b)

 Stress in each member of truss in part (a) and part (b)

 Support reactions in part (a) and part (b)

3. Write down your comments about experiment.
