a) The three-dimensional truss shown in the figure below is made of steel (E = 29 x 106 Ib/
in2). The cross-sectional area of each member is 3.093 in2 .Cartesian coordinates of the
joints with respect to the coordinate system are given in feet. Determine the deflection of
each joint, stress in each member and reaction forces.
b) During a maintenance process on the three-dimensional truss in part (a), the member AB
is replaced with a member with the following properties: E = 28 x 106 Ib/ in2 and A=
2.246 in2. Determine the deflection of each joint, stress in each member and reaction
forces for this new configuration and compare the results with those obtained in part (a).
Figure 1
Procedure:
Discretization
Draw the diagram of truss showing node numbers and element numbers.
1. Element type – Add/Edit/Delete – Add – link, 3D Finit stn 180 – Ok- Close.
5. PlotCtrls – Pan Zoom Rotate – Select the oblique (Obliq) or isometric (Iso) view to see
all nodes.
7. PlotCtrls – Style – Size and Shape – Display of element shapes based on real constant
values- On – Ok
9. Loads – Define loads – Apply – Structural – Force/Moment – on Nodes - pick Node 1 &
Node 2 – Ok – direction of For/Mom – FY – Force/Moment value – 250 (-ve value) –
Ok.
10. Loads – Define loads – Apply – Structural – Force/Moment – on Nodes - pick Node 1 &
Node 2 – Ok – direction of For/Mom – FZ – Force/Moment value – 150 (-ve value) – Ok.
Solution
Postprocessor
14. Plot Results- Contour Plot - Nodal solution- DOF solution- Displacement vector sum-
Ok.
15. Element Table – Define Table – Add – user label for item ―Axstress‖ – By sequence
number – LS – LS, 1 – Ok – Close.
16. Element Table – List Element Table – Select ―Axstress‖ – Ok. (Axial stress values will
be displayed for each element).
18. List Results – Reaction Solution – All items – Ok (Reaction forces will be displayed with
node numbers).
Part (b)
The procedure is same as that in part (a) except we need to define a second set of real constants
and a second material model.
4. Modeling- Create – Elements – Element Attributes – Select Material No. 2 – Select Real
Constants Set No. 2 – Ok
5. Modeling- Create – Elements – Auto Numbered - Thru Nodes- create element (member
AB) by picking respective nodes as given in figure 1.
6. Save_DB and solve the model again.
1. Write down all the steps for performing finite element analysis of truss along with screen
shots of ANSYS.
