LATIN AMERICA

History:
The term Latin America is mainly used for those regions where Portuguese and Spanish languages are spoken. Before
the arrival of European in that region, there were different types of civilization present at that time. Spanish and
Portuguese imposed their language and Roman Catholicism. Both the Spanish and the Portuguese brought African
slaves to their colonies, as laborers for working purpose.

Origin:
There was roman culture till 1830 and after that only Spanish and Portuguese culture was seen. In the middle 19th
century, Napoleon III used this term for those regions which are at south of American state having their own culture
and religion. There is a diverse culture of American state because in different time, different people are living there
from different region.

It is said that the history of Latin America is old (before 30,000 years ago). Historian said that there is no authenticity
of that talk because there are few text sources.

Colonialization era:
Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas in 1492. Europe as well as Spanish crowns traveled to America and
start colonialization. They focused specifically on insuring only true Christians were granted access. The disease small
pox was brought there for those who did not follow the same model. Spanish crowns give access to only selected
people.

Francisca de Figueroa, an African-Iberian woman seeking entrance into the America. On her behalf she had a witness
attest to her religious purity to get an entrance license. she was allowed entrance into the Americas in 1601 when a
'Decree from His Majesty' was presented that she is the Christian.

Religious:
In the New World, religion was still a prevalent issue which had to be considered in everyday life. According to
European tradition "[a] witch – a bruja – was thought to reject God. This rejection of God was seen as an
abomination and was not tolerated by the authorities either in Spain nor Latin America.

19th century revolution:


Following the model of the U.S. and French revolutions, most of Latin America achieved its independence by 1825.

As industrialization begin in Latin America, The Western European powers, in particular Great Britain and France,
and the United States began to play major roles, since the region became economically dependent on these nations.

The influence in that region because there were present some rich resources and they developed through it. As the
development begin, concentration of wealth was also begin.

1900-1920:
By the start of the century, the United States continued its interventionist attitude, which aimed to directly defend
its interests from European in the region.

Platt Amendment:

The conclusion of the Spanish–American War the new government of Cuba and the United States signed the Platt
Amendment in 1902, which authorized the United States to intervene in Cuban affairs.

Panama Canal:

In Colombia, United States sought the concession of a territory in Panama to build a much-anticipated canal called
Panama Canal.
LATIN AMERICA

Banana Wars:

In the first decades of the twentieth century, there were several military wars into America and Colombia, mostly in
defense of commercial interests, which became known as the "Banana Wars.

Francisco I. Madero:

Francisco I. Madero, a moderate liberal whose aim was to modernize the country, launched an election campaign in
1910. Madero was arrested on Election Day and Díaz declared the winner. This event became the start of the
Mexican Revolution.

1930-1960:
Great depression:

The Great Depression posed a great challenge to the region. The collapse of the world economy resulted in low
demand for raw materials which effect the economies of Latin America. So, a solution of that great depression,
government leaders in Latin America turned their backs on the older economic policies.

The goal was to create:

a. self-sufficient economies
b. own industrial sectors
c. large middle classes

cold war:

The start of the Cold War forced governments to choose between the United States and the Soviet Union. This cold
War also brought the United States and most Latin American nations together.
