COMPUTER NETWORKING
MODEM : Modem stands for modulation and demodulation. Modem is device that converts digital signal into
analog and analog signal into digital. Modem sends and received data from one computer to another through
telephone lines. The sending and receiving computers both must have modems.
REPEATER : In telecommunications, a repeater is an electronic device that receives a signal and retransmits
it. Repeaters are used to extend transmissions so that the signal can cover longer distances or be received on the
other side of an obstruction.
HUB : A hub, also called a network hub, is a common connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are
devices commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. The hub contains multiple ports.
BRIDGE : A bridge is a type of computer network device that provides interconnection with
other bridge networks that use the same protocol. Bridge devices work at the data link layer of the Open System
Interconnect (OSI) model, connecting two different networks together and providing communication between them.
ROUTER : A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer
networks. Routers perform the traffic directing functions on the Internet. Data sent through the internet, such as a
web page or email, is in the form of data packets. ... A router is connected to two or more data lines from different IP
networks.
SWITCH : A network switch is a hardware device that channels incoming data from multiple input ports to a
specific output port that will take it toward its intended destination. It is a small device that transfers data packets
between multiple network devices such as computers, routers, servers or other switches.
GATEWAY : A gateway is a node (router) in a computer network, a key stopping point for data on its way to or
from other networks. We are able to communicate and send data back on the Internet. The node that's a stopping
point can be a gateway or a host node.
Wi-Fi CARD : Wireless Internet cards, also known as Local Area Network, or LAN, cards, are one of the many
types of adapter cards that add capabilities to your computer. Other adapter cards can enable teleconferencing,
improve sound systems or download photos from a digital camera.
It uses a continuous range of values that Digital signal uses discrete 0 and 1 to
help you to represent information. represent information.
The analog signal bandwidth is low The digital signal bandwidth is high.
Passive hubs or concentrators do not amplify or regenerate incoming signals before rebroadcasting them to
the network. They do not improve the performance of local area networks (LANs), and may limit maximum media
distances. Typically, passive hubs are connected to other devices in a star configuration.
Active hubs or multiport repeaters amplify the incoming electrical signals that contain data packets. They maximize
network media distances and follow the same rules as repeaters. Although active hubs do not prioritize data packets,
they can be configured as firewalls to examine them.
Intelligent hubs work like active hubs and include remote management capabilities. They also provide flexible data
rates to network devices.
Ans. A router is a device that functions as both a bridge and a router. It can forward data between networks
(serving as a bridge), but can also route data to individual systems within a network (serving as a router). ... It simply
forwards the incoming packets from one network to the next.
