GERUND AND INFINITIVE

THE INFINITIVE

To infinitive to be/work/play He has to work


Form Bare infinitive (infinitive without “to”) be/work/play He must work
Negative infinitive not to be/work/play She asked me not to go

Uses of the Infinitive:

 After some verbs like: want – decide – ask – tell – etc.


She wants to take up Medicine.
 After adjectives: easy - difficult - interesting - pleased - etc.
This is easy to understand.
 To express purpose (=why you do something) also called “purpose infinitive”
She came to talk with the headmistress.
 After interrogative pronouns: where – what – how – etc.
I do not know how to start.

THE GERUND

Form infinitive + ing (= gerund) being/working(playing


Negative form not + gerund not being/working/playing

Uses of the gerund:

 Subject of a sentence:
Speaking in loud voice helps me improve my English
 After certain verbs like: love – like – mind – enjoy – etc.
He loves meeting new people
 After prepositions:
Do the exercise without using a dictionary.
