Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

1 General
Object of the plant is the desalination of sea water for the production of demineralized water for technological
use. The final overall capacity is 40cm / h to 100% for each line, with a total flow rate of the 3 lines of
treatment equal to 2.880cm / d.
The desalination plant consists of 4 treatment sections on three separate hydraulic lines (Line A - Line B and
Line C).
The 3 lines are to be operated simultaneously or individually as needed.

The treatment sections are divided according to the following scheme:

1) Section of Ultrafiltration
2) Section of reverse osmosis 1st stage
3) Section of reverse osmosis, 2nd stage
4) Electro-deionization EDI section

Each line can be one of the following states:

PRODUCTION: it means that there are opened the appropriate operating valves and the relative feed pump is
active. Water is produced. When the lines are set in PRODUCTION it means that they enter in operation always
at the same time from lines 1 or 2.

In the case of the ultrafiltration section at the expiration of the operating time of a line, the steps of
backwashing are completed and then the same line back in operation.
It is not possible that both Ultrafiltration lines in operation can perform the backwash simultaneously. In the
case the time to exercise has expired and the other line is in backwash, the production continues until the other
line does not return to PRODUCTION.
The backwash is performed by the only unit in common with the 4 treatment sections. Therefore, the
backwashing of the requested line will be performed as soon as the unit is available.

In the case of the reverse osmosis and EDI section at the expiration of the running time of one or more lines,
being the flushing units that are common for the Ultrafiltration section, the flushing of the closed lines will be
performed as soon as the unit is available.

STAND-BY: it means that the line waits for the other line to finish the operation time in order to enter in
PRODUCTION.
In this way, the 3 lines work in exchange.
Example: Line A in PRODUCTION - Line B in STAND-BY - Line C in STAND-BY:
A produces, at the expiration of the operation time, B or C goes into production. A completes all stages of
backwash and remains in STAND-BY until line B or C does not complete in turn the operation time. At this
point line B or line C starts the backwashing stages and line A starts the production. If during the
PRODUCTION, the operator puts the line in stand-by, it means the same line completes the operation time,
performs all backwashing steps and then remains in STAND-BY.

EXCLUSION: the line that is EXCLUDED means it is completely OUT OF SERVICE and cannot be used for
PRODUCTION or for STAND-BY. If a line is in PRODUCTION and the other one is EXCLUDED, the
production line will remain in operation for the set time, then it will complete the steps of backwashing and then
immediately it will return to production. No transfer between the lines takes place.
If during the PRODUCTION, the operator EXCLUDES the line, it means that the same line, without waiting
for the end of the operation time, immediately performs the backwash stages and at the end of these it will
completely isolate itself and remain out of service until the operator presses the PRODUCTION or STAND-BY
button.

If a single line is used, in the backwashing phase, the supply of treated water stops for the duration of the
backwashing phase.
This in case it is necessary to proceed with maintenance on a line without the interruption of the treated water
supply.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

The plant will operate with the following methods:

DEAD END for the section of ultrafiltration (100% - no deviation). The DEAD END mode means that all
water to be treated passes through the membrane and modules and the quantity free of pollutants goes to
accumulation section.

CROSS FLOW for the sections with osmosis and EDI (with deviation). The CROSS FLOW Mode means that
a part of the water to be treated is discharged and / or recovered as a percentage already established and the
remaining quantity of free of pollutants water goes to the accumulation section. The percentage of deviation is
given by the following ratio: (discharged water flow rate / incoming water flow rate) x 100. The PLC
automatically provides the calculation taking the values measured by related flowmeters.

1.1 INTRODUCTION- PLANT DESCRIPTION

Hydraulic circuit
Raw water comes from a pumping system outside the treatment plant complex; The pumping station is
complete with measuring instruments whose signals are managed by the control panel of the plant.
The raw water pumps are started via signals from the WT PLC to the MCC panel, and MCC panels will send
confirmation status run of the pumps to the WT PLC, depending on the needs according to the lines and at the
level of the ultra-filtered water tank. The water then enters the plant and passes through a pair of automatic
self-cleaning filters with alternating exchange operation, provided with a 200 micron cut-off, in order to
preserve the UF membrane modules against any size impurities that could be harmful.

The water subsequently enters the UF modules from the bottom located collector, it follows a path to the top
section, where it will be forced to cross the membranes’ surface and to leave the impurities, and it will be released
from above to be conveyed into the piping of the “UF WATER STORAGE TANK” unfiltered water collection
tank.

The unfiltered water in the “UF WATER STORAGE TANK” collection tank is then released in the next section
which is provided with reverse osmosis for the desalination process.
For backwashing the membranes there is a dedicated unit in which the "tank CLEANING & amp; FLUSHING
TANK "is replenished with demineralized water from the reverse osmosis section. This unit is used for the
operations Backwash UF + RO1e2 and EDI.

For the backwashing membrane there is a dedicated unit in which the “CLEANING & FLUSHING TANK” is
filled with water coming from the reverse osmosis section.
This unit is integrated for the backwashing operations UF + RO1e2 e EDI.

For the UF section in each line, every 30/45 minutes, it occurs the backwashing with water and simultaneously
the dosage of Sodium Hypochlorite. Water enters from the top of the modules on the side and exits from the
lateral discharge loads of the removed pollutants.
The backwash water and the drain water are conveyed in a single discharge pipe.
In the case in which the backwashing fail to completely remove the residues of pollution and fouling there must
be performed a chemical washing. Chemical washing is a manual operation and it requires only that the plant is
completely out of order with both lines.

For the RO I°pass sections for each desalination line there is a dedicated pump that picks UF water from the
collection tank "UF WATER STORAGE TANK" in order to send it to the membranes. Here, at first it passes
through a section of safety filtration with a cut-off of 5 microns in order to protect the RO membrane modules
against any size impurities that could be harmful.

The feed water is now treated in the RO I ° pass system. In this section a high-pressure pump and an energy
recovery system increase the prevalence of water up to a value higher than that of the osmotic pressure (which
depends on the salt content); afterwards the water passes through the membranes which retain the salts.

The reverse osmosis system is brought to speed in few seconds after the start-up and its operation is continuous
because the osmotic modules do not require regeneration. The osmosis process involves the almost total removal
of the salts present in the water, so as to obtain a demineralization. The produced water is called permeate and

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

it is collected in the "WATER STORAGE TANK RO 1st PASS" that is common for all three lines. The waste
water is called Rejected and it is sent to discharge since it has high concentration of salts.

At the end of the exercise phase it follows the operation called Flushing, which consists in the removal of raw
water present in the hydraulic circuit of the line, with the use of demineralized water (and free of salts) previously
collected from " CLEANING & FLUSHING TANK ". For each use of water this tank is filled with new water,
suitably controlled by a level control provided with pre-established limits.

For the RO II°pass section for each desalination line there is a dedicated pump that takes over the osmotic
water of the I°pass section collected by the “WATER STORAGE TANK RO 1st PASS” in order to send it to
the membranes.

The feed water is now treated in the RO I ° pass system. In this system a high-pressure pump increases the
prevalence of water up to a value higher than that of the osmotic pressure (which depends on the salt content),
after which the water passes through the membranes which retain the salts. The reverse osmosis system is
brought to speed in few seconds after the start-up and its operation is continuous because the osmotic modules
do not require regeneration. The osmosis process involves the almost total removal of the salts present in the
water, so as to obtain a demineralization.

The produced water is called permeate and it is collected in the "WATER STORAGE TANK RO 2st PASS"
that is common for all three lines. The waste water is called Rejected and it is recovered in the “UF WATER
STORAGE TANK”.

1.3 PLANT START-UP PROCEDURE

A graphic page of the supervision system to the main Home page provides the appropriate virtual controls for
the Start / Stop of the plant with control 0-1 in position 1.
The plant is made out of various sections, each operated by the related collection tank, thus each cascade section,
starting from the final water tank, will operate according to the levels indicated in the previous chapter.

After performing the “Start-up” procedure, the plant is ready for operation and this condition for simplicity in
the following description will be AUT defined.
Only with the plant in AUT operating condition it will be able to operate and the various devices can operate
with programmed operation.
In terms of an AUT plant, the treatment sections can operate individually, in an independent manner,
respectively with their own level devices and equipment. The chemical section can operate in an independent
manner, regardless of which treatment line is a function.

It is provides for the operation of the plant the two-speed mode. The first defined
"maintenance" in single and double line in operation is the one in which the inverter
pump of the afferent processing sections operate with a speed between 80/90%. The
second defined "maximum" in the case of high water consumption by the applications,
and in which the levels of the related tanks have a tendency to get empty. In this case,
there will be operated two of the three lines for each section, with operation at 100% of
the estimated potential.

Users control status

➢ Provide a graphic page for special supervision of controls for related users, for enabling operation status
0-1 (Start / Stop). To allow the operation of the user, the local control must be in position 1.
➢ Local control with appropriate commands for related users, in order to enable the operation status 0-1
(Start / Stop). To allow the user to operate, the local control must be in position 1.
➢ For the proper operation of the pumps the protection signal of the motor overload cannot be active.
➢ The automatic valves feature the Box until the end of the process, with Open / Closed position signals.
During operation of the various sections and / or treatment lines, there must be checked the positioning
of the end stops and if false, the temporized signalling alarm must be activated together with the
shutdown of the related line.
➢ For the inverter, the Eun signal must be used in order to activate it and drive the related motor. In order
to activate the related user, check the signals 0 – 1 Start / Stop and the local controls and activate the
related Run signal of the inverter. For all inverters there shall be provided the start and braking in ramp.
➢ For the instrumental analogue signals at the inlet of the PLC there shall be provided the diagnose of the
provided measuring sector and if it is exceeding the range < o > follow warning alert for dysfunction of
the measure.

1.4 OPERATION PROCEDURE AND SELF-CLEANING FILTERS WASHING UF

The raw sea water, before entering the ultrafiltration modules, meets a filter system which consists of a pair of
automatic self-cleaning systems. Each system consists of a chamber containing a graduated filter able to retain
the particles in suspension present in the raw water. The filtration takes place indoor, outwardly retaining the
solid bodies because of these settle, they can create an impediment in terms of the water passage which results
in a pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet.

Each self-cleaning filter has a capacity of maximum flow rate of 330 cm / h, the washing flow load rate is 12 m³
/ h at 1 bar pressure. With the UF modules pressure of around 2 bar a maximum quantity of 25m3 / h will be
discharged. The filter continues to supply water in service also during the washing stage, therefore taking in
consideration the above data, the system can ensure the operation of two UF lines and at the same time also the
washing process.

In any case, it is recommended that during the washing stage, the alarms for loads and pressured must be “frozen”
for 15 seconds, time necessary for filter washing.

1.4.1 SELF-CLEANING WASHING PROCEDURE

To a limit value set according to ∆P (adjustable from 0.3 ÷ 1 bar) it occurs the washing cycle of the self-cleaning
filter, according to the following sequence.

1. The difference of pressure is measured by the sensors “00GCB10 CP002” or “00GCB10 CP003”
2. At exceeding the predetermined limit value and passing the T5 verification time, it is performed the
backwash the filter.
3. It is driven the valve corresponding to the related filter in service located between “00GCB10 AA201 or
00GCB10 AA202”
4. It is driven afterwards, in the same time, the electrical motor of the filter for a duration of approximately
15 seconds.
5. At the completion of this operation, the valve is closed and the motor is stopped.
6. In this point it is read the differential measurement for about 30 seconds, at the end of this time you must
return to operation the differential.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

1.5 OPERATION PROCEDURE AND DOSAGE OF COAGULANT

From UF section on duty at filtration section there are connected a measurement system of turbidity, type
"00GCB10CQ001" and a dosage of coagulant with dosing pumps type "00GCN11 / 12 AP001". The
combination of the two systems with the filtration devices allows the retention of particles and solid bodies
present in the water to be treated. Also at the inlet of each UF line there is a magnetic flowmeter. The dosage of
coagulant will be directly proportional to the lines requested for operation.

During the normal operation of the UF lines the raw water passes through both self-cleaning filters; with the
ratings of the case given by the request for operation of the section, there are enabled for operation also these
devices, measuring and dosing systems.
The self-cleaning filters installed are two but only one of them is enabled for operation, through a control to a
video page in order to enable the respective filters.

All users in AUT position and with the plant’s start-up and missing active alarms.

1. With the UF lines in operation, the filtering system and the related connected devices.
2. You have to verify the turbidity value “00GCB10CQ001” and a a maintenance limit value.
3. At this value it is activated a coagulant dosage pump between the two "00GCN11 / 12 AP001" by driving
the specific Run signal, and the dosage will be in direct proportion to the sum of the inlet loads for each UF
line.
4. Set operating limit to maintain turbidity, and high limit value with alarm delay.
5. Set limit to maintain inlet load and high limit value with alarm delay.
6. When the UF lines are stopped, the turbidity instrument and the coagulant dosage are disabled.

2 Raw Water & Electrochlorination sections

2.1 SUPPLY OF UF SECTION

Raw water comes from a pumping system outside the treatment plant complex; The pumping station is
complete with measuring instruments whose signals are managed by the WT PLC.
The raw water pumps are started via signals from the WT PLC to the MCC panel, and MCC panels will send
confirmation status run of the pumps to the WT PLC.
A system of valves adjusts the flow entering the plant, depending on the needs of the lines in operation and at
the level of the ultra-filtered water tank. The ultrafiltration treatment system requires a constant flow to its
input, according to a predetermined pressure field. The system that feeds the UF section requires to be
modulated to allow this need, and although the machines of installed systems are customer care, handling the
signals of these devices is entrusted to our WT PLC.

The external feed pumps are 3, two in service and the third in standby, controlled by WT PLC; however the
power part is handled by MCC supplied by customer, while for the start / stop control, there are digital signals
in our WT PLC. The signals provided for pumps operation are listed in paragraph 2.3.1

In particular:

1) 3 digital signals for outlet 0 – 1 request of pumps start-up

there will be driven one or two pumps in operation at the UF lines requested for operation and according to the load
requested for operation
2) 3 feedback signals at inlet 0 - 1pump in operation
it is intended the feedback signal for the start-up of the operation sequence; the start-up will be ended with alarm
signalling
3) 1 outlet analogic signal 4-20mA for control of proportional adjustment valve
with plant in operation, it will be driven the valve proportional with the step by step operation, for the
recycling in the main tank, based on the obtained measured pressure

2.2 SUPPLY OF ELECTROCHLORINATION SECTION

Raw water comes from a pumping system outside the treatment plant complex; The pumping station is
complete with measuring instruments whose signals are managed by the WT PLC of the plant.
The raw water pumps are started via signals from the WT PLC to the MCC panel, and MCC panels will send
confirmation status run of the pumps to the WT PLC.
Here, a valve system adjusts the inlet flow to the plant, depending on the HYPO lines called at service.

The HYPO treatment system requires a constant flow of flow at a predetermined pressure range. The system
that feeds the HYPO section requires to be modulated to allow this our need, and although the machines of the
installed systems are from the customer, the signal management of these devices is entrusted to our WT PLC
Therefore, HYPO signals that must go to DCS will pass from our WT PLC, thus making "bridge".

External feed pumps are 3 of which two are in service and the third in stand-by, the power portion is handled
by MCC by the customer, while for the Start / Stop control there are digital signals with WT PLC.
The service of Raw Water Pumps and dispatching water to the HYPO system, is started by the following
signals from Hypochlorite System PLC

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

1) N.3 Signals for the three Electrocloration lines in operation request

2) N.3 Feedback Signals to HYPO of Raw Water Pumps running

HYPO dosing pump driving signals are also provided to the users. These signals are used to enable the dosing
pumps.

The metering pumps are divided into "Continuos" and "Shocking" the above dispense chlorinated water at
various points. Depending on the various points required, there must be an actual state signal via HYPO to WT
PLC, and will then be named from the points of use.

The group are follow: Status Signals

I. Continuons Intake Velocity 1&2 (0= Stop / 1= Run)
II. Continuons Pump House (0= Stop / 1= Run)
III. Shock Intake Velocity 1 (0= Stop / 1= Run)
IV. Shock Intake Velocity 2 (0= Stop / 1= Run)
V. Shock Pump House (0= Stop / 1= Run)

➢ Provide for each group I to V. a soft link interface to activate the dosage. (0 = Stop / 1 = Run Request)

➢ In the absence of this signal the dosage will not be possible. And with active call after a T.Alarm
(30Sec) time has elapsed, you will be alerted.

➢ At the dosing operation for each group, Denora emits status software signal, indicating that the pump
is running (0 = Stop / 1 = Run)

Considering that for the operation of Raw Water Pumps these will be in operation with
both Ultrafiltration lines, with both Electrochlorination lines and UF + HYPO systems
and regardless of how many lines (UF & HYPO) will be in service.

2.3 FUNCTIONING PROCEDURE OF RAW WATER PUMPS

As anticipated, there are three (3) plant supply pumps, the three pumps will be two in service and the third one
in active position, but with the predisposition to operate as a third pump parallel to the first two. The third pump
will be in stand-by or in the event of the entry into service of the third UF line; The condition of the third UF
line is subordinated to the request of the operator with manual activation.
There will be provided appropriate video control for operation in active supply, or contemporary with the first
two.

Raw Water Pumps will work under the following requirements:

CONDITIONS FOR OPERATION:

• No active fault feedback 00GAF01/2/3 AP001XB48
• No active temperature alarm 00GAF01/2/3 CT004 XQ01
• No active pressure alarm 00GAF01/2/3CP001 XQ01
• Minimum level OK 00GAF10CL001/2
• Valve Position Valve Signal OK 00GAC02 AA101

The above pumps are electrically driven by MCC that represents the responsibility of the client, but for the start-
up and there are provided three (3) request signals and three (3) feedback signals from the mentioned MCC of
the client.
Also there is an automatic valve with a positioner on control piloting, 4-20mA, and the related analogue return
signal.

Sequence start-up
1. At the request for service of one or more lines (UF or HYPO), they will be also activated the related valves
and devices in operation.
2. With (UF or HYPO) line ready the control valve shall be 100% open 00GAC02 AA101.
3. The request signal for the lines in service (UF or HYPO) is sent; For the UF section, the flow control valve
described in chapter 3 (Start sequence step 1) is opened, while for the HYPO section see relevant operating
documentation.
4. It is expected the analogue signal of the control valve 00GAC02 AA101 total opening and it is send the
request signal to the Raw Water Pump. If within a predetermined time there is answer, continue with the
procedure, otherwise it stops with the failure to initiate signalling.
5. Set the following reference fields for "step by step" modulation
6. When the pumps is turned on and confirmed, it begins the adjustment of the valve 00GAC02 AA101 with
the following methods.
6.1 As (P0) Set a reference value for the maintenance pressure at the outlet of the system.
6.2 As (Pbm ± 0,25) a “dead” band on which the pressure is adjusted
6.3 As (Jump) The increase or decrease value of the 4-20mA signal at each step
6.4 As (TP1) the time interval for the control of the measured pressure
6.5 The measurement of pressure before the previous stage (Jump)
7. Having settled the maintenance pressure (P0) and the “dead” band for the work field (Pbm ± 0,2), it is
commenced the process with the valve entirely open and it shall be progressively closed with a (Jump) of
decrease 4-20mA pre-set, in order to control afterwards the pressure (TP1).
8. If the pressured measured by the transmitter re-enters in the work field, the system will be maintained in
the “dead” band; in the contrary, the system will continue until it will re-enter in normal.
9. In the case of multiple lines (UF or HYPO), the system will also start the second Raw Water Pump starting
with the first running. And its valve adjustment 00GAC02 AA101.
10. With the Raw Water Pumps running and when the pressure control valve 00GAC02 AA101 has stabilized,
it will be possible to adjust the flow rate valves (UF or HYPO) in service.

Power on more Raw Water Pumps

11. The operation of the Raw Water Pump controls the pressure from 00GAC01 CP001 by adjusting the valve
00GAC02 AA101.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

12. In the case of a Raw Water Pump in service and pressure deviation greater than (Pbm ± 0.25) and with the
valve adjustment 00GAC02 AA101 reached the limit of the minimum opening (15%), active delay time (T-
15Sec), after which the second Raw Water Pump was started.
13. At this point, the valve 00GAC02 AA001 must be remodeled for the new condition and the pressure
maintenance (Po).

How to turn off more Raw Water Pumps

14. With more than one Raw Water Pumps in operation the stoppage will take place in the condition where
there is less demand for water from the utilities, so the greater amount of discharge water from Raw Water
Pumps will increase the pressure ( Po).
15. In this condition, the 00GAC02 AA001 control valve will gradually open, and close to the total aperture
(85%), a delay time (T-15Sec) will be active, after which the second Raw Water Pump will stop.
16. At this point, the valve 00GAC02 AA001 must be remodeled for the new condition and the pressure
maintenance (Po).

Raw Water Pumps Stop Conditions

Raw Water Pumps stop under the following conditions:
• No Feedback signal of pumps running
• Motor protection activated
• Disabling UF & HYPO lines in service
• High engine temperature
• Low level tank in Pump House
• Low pressure on Pump discharge (00GAF 01/02/03 CP001)
• Pump TDH Hi Hi (*) – it represents pump minimum flow protection
• Pump TDH Lo Lo (*) – it represents pump run-out protection

(*) Pumps TDH shall be calculated as pump discharge pressure – pit suction level

In the event of unplanned shutdown of one or more pumps during the service of Raw Water Pumps, the third
pumps in operation may be activated.

WARNING: You can not start two UF lines and two HYPO lines simultaneously in
the case of blocking two Raw Water Pumps

1- Force controller o/p to zero if controller o/p is less than 12%.

2- Deviation alarm shall be initiated in case of deviation between controller output
and valve feedback 5%.

3 Operation procedure for Ultrafiltration section

The following start-up procedure and operation of UF lines is the same for both operations except for the
intervention and actuation of the line equipment, these will be described in Tables n. 1, 2, 3 regarding operation,
pages n. 14, 17, 20.
The lines of treatment for this section are three (3) and they are requested simultaneously for operation up to
two (2), except the enabling of the third one made by the operator.
If the operator chooses to use the third line, there must be used also the third feeding pump; if for various reasons
the third feeding pump cannot be used, it will not be possible to start the third line and in this case there will be
enabled the special alarm signal. All three lines will have enabling control 0-1 for the service in which the zero
position (0) will disable any operating condition and / or washing.
In this case it there only two lines will be available, however, though this disabling cannot be provided
simultaneously for all three lines, but only for maximum of two. At least one line must always be considered on
duty. The operation of the lines should provide the automatic exchange on every restart, in such a way as to
allow a constant distributed operation.

3.3 START SEQUENCE OF ULTRAFILTRATION LINE A

If the level in the UF WATER STORAGE TANK did not arrive at HSL, there is the permission to start one UF
line.
If the level in the UF WATER STORAGE TANK did not arrive at LSL there is the permission to start the second
UF line.
With all users in AUT position and the plant in operation and no active alarms.

1. It is opened at 20% “00GCB11 AA301” valve and then follows the adjustment of the driven supply pumps.
2. FT filtering procedure: The automatic valve (FEED) “00GCB11 AA201 and 00GCB11 AA203” are
opened.
a. FB filtering procedure: The automatic valve (FEED) “00GCB11 AA202 and 00GCB11 AA204”
are opened.
3. FT filtering procedure: Valves “00GCB11 AA202 and 00GCB11 AA204” remain closed and there will be
an alternation with opening the valves mentioned at point 2, at the end of each cycle of backwashing of the
membranes. The backwash cycle is provided every 40min (duration can vary) and a backwash cycle takes
around 30 / 60Sec (duration can vary).
4. The final outlet valve ultrafiltred “00GCB11 AA205” is opened.
5. The other valves of the line are to be maintained closed.
6. At the end of the cycle the start signal is given to the supply pump. To start the pump you will thus have to
adjust the plant’s inlet valve "00GCB11 AA301" so as not to exceed the maximum operating pressure of
2,5Bar. This value is measured by the instrument "00GCB11 CP002A". Set the limit value operating hold
pressure, and high limit value with alarm delay and blockage of the line.
7. The incoming flow value set in the panel and read by the magnetic flowmeter "00GCB11 CF001". Set a
service threshold and high-threshold value with alarm delay.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

8. During start-up of the plant it should be determined the maximum adjustable flow rate so that the working
pressure at that value is sufficient for the crossing of the membranes and to arrive to the storage tank.
9. During the service if the flow rate measured by the magnetic flowmeter "00GCB11 CF002" drops below a
minimum value, it means that there is a malfunction and an alarm signal has to be given with stop of the feed
pumps. Set a service threshold and a low threshold value with alarm delay.
10. During the normal operation, the values measured between the inlet transmitter “00GCB11 CP002B” and
the outlet one “00GCB11 CP002A” must be compared. The result of the comparison between the pressure
transmitters is called differential DPIT and will give the value that might increase as result of the membrane
fouling. If the value of ΔP exceeds the set value, it will start the backwashing procedure, also before the
time provided for this operation.
11. During operation and production the water turbidity is measured by a turbidimeter placed at the exit from
the line called "00GCB10 CF002"; if the value exceeds a predetermined threshold, a delayed alarm will be
signalled. Set an operation high value threshold with alarm delay.

4 Backwash sequence and CEB ultrafiltration

The quality of the supplied into a membrane system has a significant impact on performance, recovery and
availability of the membrane. The substances in water that exceed a critical concentration permanently or
temporarily exceed a maximum concentration can result in flow rates, achievable permeability and recovery
rates that fall below the indicated design values . This also applies to the dosage of inorganic iron or aluminium-
based coagulants.

The concentrations that exceed the allowed levels can also significantly increase the frequency of the chemically
enhanced washings (CEB) necessary to maintain a stable permeability as well as the frequency of chemical
clean-in-place (CIP) to remove fouling or settlements. This could lead to increased consumption of chemicals
and can negatively affect the system’s availability.

By adding the above mentioned coagulants before the UF, there must be firstly performed the CEB and CIP: "
Chemically Enhanced Backwash (CEB) " and " Chemical Clean In Place (CIP) by using the chemical products
for CEB / CIP .

Chemically Enhanced Backwash (CEB)

The CEB procedure involves the use of three (3) chemicals (acid - Soda - Hypochlorite) which, depending on
the water process and pre-treatment, is necessary. The CEB cycle can also be performed with the use of a single
chemical product. A CEB cycle may provide one or more chemicals. For this there will be provided special keys
enabled by the use of one or more chemicals.

The use of Soda has as its purpose the removal of the organic and biologic fraction in the
water.
The use of coagulants in the pre-treatment ( iron or aluminium based) requires the use of the
acid.
The use of chlorine acts like disinfectant.

By using the iron coagulant it is mandatory to perform the Acid CEB with 6/8 hours before the
Chlorine CEB. This is in order to avoid the precipitation of the hydroxyl radicals There will be
provided from the program the impossibility to perform a Chlorine CEB before an Acid CEB.

There must be predicted a sequence of taking over the CEB process for the related chemicals:
CEB 1: For alkaline fraction
CEB 2: For acid fraction
CEB 3: For chlorine fraction

According to the chosen option regarding the chemical products and the taking over sequence, the CEB
procedure will take place according to the below indicated methods:

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

Performance methods for CEB procedure

This procedure is performed after a certain number of operating cycles and backwashing or depending on the
hours of the UF single line in operation or on the overall performance of the system.
It will be provided a counter on the video page for counting:
• Operating / backwash cycles
• Operating hours for each UF line
• System Recovery between inlet and outlet
• IN / OUT Differential Pressure
It will be provided a set value for each of the described above choices, which will enable through a special key
the sequence of the CEB.

pH instrument on line CEB type "00GCB20CQ001"

Only in CEB stages with acid and Soda there can be set and activated the high and low alarm
thresholds for the related reactants and in the related phases.
With active Alkaline CEB phase, it is to be checked the pH value and at overcoming min or max
value, the trigger alarm will be activated for a variable period of time.
With active Acid CEB phase, it is to be checked the pH value and at overcoming min or max,
the trigger alarm will be activated for a variable period of time.

4.4 CEB ULTRAFILTRATION SEQUENCE LINE A-B-C

The CEB essentially runs in a similar way to a Backwash, that is, the flow enters from the output ultrafiltration
side, to exit the operating input side. In addition to the flow it is introduced also the chemical product in order
to increase the effectiveness of the washing action.
The CEB procedure provides the introduction of the chemical product using treated water as driving fluid, the
amount of the chemical depends on the time predetermined for the phase and the pH value measured by the
"00GCB20 AA701" instrument.
After this phase a certain time follows for the chemical reaction to take place, followed by a phase of BWB and
BWT.
The CEB step is carried out both in BWB mode and in BWT mode. During the CEB cycle there will be an
exchange of the valves to allow the exit of flow from both directions.

As for the normal backwashing, even the CEB phase may be performed individually for each bed of
membranes, therefore the backwash cycle provides a continuous sequence but in two stages, in order to allow
backwash of both beds. The CEB will be possible to run only for a single line of UF, and only for one bed at a
time.

To perform the CEB phase first there will be the stopped the related line (see sequence described in Chapter 2)
and the valves closed will be put out of service with.
Below, before starting the CEB phase, see the descriptive table of the respective phases:
At the passage of the washing solution, check the pH value from the instrument "00GCB20 AA701".
Set a maintenance and alarm threshold value for Acid stage.
Set a maintenance and alarm threshold value for Alkaline stage.

Upon reaching the alarm threshold and after the delay time you will have a general alarm signalling.

5 Operation procedure of Reverse Osmosis Section 1st Pass

The treatment lines for this section are three (3) and they are demanded simultaneously for operation up to two
(2) except for the case when even the third line is enabled by the operator. All three lines will have enabled the
0-1 control for operation in which the zero position (0) disables any operating condition and / or washing.
In this case there will be only two lines available, however, though this disabling cannot be provided
simultaneously for all three lines, but only a maximum of two. At least one line must always be considered
always on duty.
The operation of the lines should provide the automatic exchange on every reboot, in such a way as to allow a
constant distributed service.

5.1 START SEQUENCE OF REVERSE OSMOSI 1ST PASS LINE A

If the level in the UF WATER STORAGE TANK has not reached L there is permission to RO 1st Pass lines.
If the level in 1st PASS RO WATER STORAGE TANK has not reached HSL there is permission to start line
RO1st PASS.
If the level in 1st PASS RO WATER STORAGE TANK has not reached LSL there is permission to start the
second line RO 1st PASS.
Otherwise it remains in standby and another section in automatic mode.
With all users in AUT position and plant running and with no active alarms.

1. Enable for operation the RO 1st Pass lines according on the demands from the level in the treatment
tank from downstream.
2. Open the automatic valves “00GCF11 AA202” and “00GCP31 AA202”
3. Open at 100% the control valve “00GCF11 AA301
4. After 3 Sec drive the supply pump “00GCF11 AP001”, the dosing pump “00GCN61/62 AP001”
sodium metabisulfite controlled with 4-20mA signal from ORP “00GCF10 CQ001”, the dosing pump
"00GCN51 / 52 AP001" antiscalant in constant mode according to the load of the single line on duty
from the magnetic flowmeter "00GCF11 CF001".
5. From the start of the supply pump "00GCF11 AP001" activate the instrument of pH control "00GCF10
CQ003" that displays the value of water at inlet, set an operation value beyond which activates the
pump "00GCN33 / 34 AP001" with dosage directly proportional to the increase of hydrochloric acid as
a function of the measured value of the set value.
6. From the start of the supply pump "00GCF11 AP001", for a T6 period of time representing 10 Sec
(adjustable) in which it must be checked the pressure to the instrument "00GCF11 CP004", after T6
passes and with the presence of the minimum threshold signal continue with the start-up procedure,
otherwise it stops with alarm. Set for "00GCF11 CP004" a minimum operating pressure threshold
value.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

7. To the supply pump “00GCF11 AP001” it is associated a pressure switch “00GCF10 CP001” with
minimum pressure in supply. In case of intervention, there shall be provided alarm in delay with pump
stop, line stop and general alarm.
8. The sodium metabisulfite dosage shall work in a proportional manner between the 0 mV and 1500mV
values. When it reaches a value under 150mV the dosing pump must be stopped. When it exceeds the
500mV value, an alarm in delay will be activated with general signalling and blockage of the line.
9. From the start of the supply pump “00GCF11 AP001” it starts the T7 time (settable) during which it
must be checked the measure of ORP "00GCF10 CQ001" and it must be enabled the counting of the
T8 time in case of exceeding the alarm threshold value. Upon exceeding the threshold value, and after
the elapsed time T8, the start-up procedure stops, in case if it hasn’t already been initiated the system
will stop with the emergency stop procedure.
10. T6 time having passed, the HPP “00GCF11 AP002” pump provided with inverter in the outlet ramp
and at a predetermined speed (speed expressed in %) and after 3 Sec the valve "00GCP31 aa202"
closes. The pressure switch "00GCF11 CP004" is provided with an alarm delay 5-10 seconds HPP T6B
at the start of the pump. In the lack of minimum pressure signal and elapsed T6B time the system stops
with alarm signalling.
11. At the closing of valve “00GCP31 AA202” open valve “00GCF11 AA204” and after the elapse of T7 5
Sec time the Booster pump “00GCF11 AP003” starts, being provided with inverter in outlet ramp and
having a pre-set speed (speed expressed in %). After T8 time of 10 Sec elapses, the speed through the
inverter of the Booster shall be adjusted according to the load magnetic measurement devices
FIT(CF002) at inlet and FIT(CF003) at outlet. The speed modulation will be made based on the value
of 2% between inlet and outlet.
12. In terms of the Booster pump there must be compared also the pressured related to the measurement
devices of the related pressures, namely, “00GCF11 CP007” aspiration and “00GCF11 CP101”
produced membrane.
13. At the closing of the “00GCP31 AA202” valve, check the conductivity measured by “00GCF11
CQ101”. Set a threshold value which when is reached, it opens valve “00GCF11 AA201” and after 2
seconds it closes “00GCF11 A202”
14. At the closing of “00GCP11 AA202” valve check the conductivity measured by “00GCF11 CQ101”.
Set a maximum threshold value based on which it is activated an alarm with a delay time of 15
minutes- T9. The set value mentioned at point 12 cannot be lower that the set value mentioned at point
13.
15. Being elapsed T8 time, adjust the speed of HPP “00GCF11 AP002” pump provided with inverter at a
load of 80/90% from the set value at the magnetic measuring device “00GCF11 CF001”. At the magnetic
measuring device it is associated a project load value, based on which the HPP pump must operate. The

adjustment performed at 80/90% it is defined as “Maintenance” as described in chapter 1.2 Levels of

collection tanks.
16. In the case of maximum demanded load for low levels of collection tanks, it is requested the maximum
admissible speed of the HPP pump. In consequence, it will be driven by inverter at 100% of the
frequency, based on the set load measured by the magnetic measuring device.
17. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF11 CP101” and “00GCF11 CP102” there will be
compared the calculation of the values (PIT101 – PIT102 = DPI101). Set a threshold value DPI101 and
at osmosis in operation, set a T10 time. At exceeding the threshold value and after T10 of 15 minutes
elapses, activate a plant signalling with general alarm.
18. With the plant in operation under pressure transmitter “00GCF11 CP008” perform a calculation
comparison between the pre-set value and the measured during operation. Afterwards perform an
adjustment in terms of valve “00GFC11 AA301”, in case of gap that exceeds the 2% between the set
value and the identified measure.
19. Perform a calculation of the values associated to the load transmitters (FIT001, FIT002 e FIT101) in
order to determine the recovery factor of the plant under reverse osmosis. Check the following
calculation:
The value of FIT101 permeate load – value of FIT001 + FIT002 supply load

FIT 101
100  N %
FIT 001  FIT 002
The obtained value N will be represented by a percentual factor and on the operating panel with the following
denomination “Recovery factor”

20. Set a threshold value for the recovery factor and afterwards perform the comparison with the measured
value. With osmosis in operation, set a T38 time. After the minimum and maximum threshold values
are exceeded and after T30 of 30 minutes duration elapses, perform plant signalling with general alarm.
Pre-establish a system that cannot set recovery values that exceed 48%
21. At the signal of the pressure transmitter “00GCF11 CP101” set a threshold value for the maximum
operation pressure; in case this value is exceeded, an automatic blockage will take place. In case of
plant blockage, comply with the stopping procedure with no flow.
22. The plant shall stop when the treated water storage tank is full.

Pre-treatment and microfiltration section

At the inlet of the osmosis sections there is a set of analysis tools for the supply water to the system, and a
microfiltration controlled by pressure transmitters placed at the inlet and outlet to it.
For this instrumentation this is in common for all three reverse osmosis lines from the first pass, and below the
function is listed:

perform a delayed run alarm signal, without block and stop of lines.

➢ PH measurement "00GCF10 CQ003" displays the value of water at inlet; for it it must established a
minimum and maximum threshold value with alarm delay. In case of exceeding the maximum value
activate the metering pump "00GCN33 / 34 AP001" with proportional dosing of hydrochloric acid
depending on the measured value in relation to the maximum set value. At one or more lines in service
perform a delayed run alarm signal, without block and stop of lines.

5. From the start of the supply pump "00GCF13 AP001" activate the instrument of pH control "00GCF10
CQ003" that displays the value of water at inlet, set an operation value beyond which activates the
pump "00GCN33 / 34 AP001" with dosage directly proportional to the increase of hydrochloric acid as
a function of the measured value of the set value.
6. From the start of the supply pump "00GCF13 AP001", for a T6 period of time representing 10 Sec
(adjustable) in which it must be checked the pressure to the instrument "00GCF13 CP004", after T6
passes and with the presence of the minimum threshold signal continue with the start-up procedure,
otherwise it stops with alarm. Set for "00GCF13 CP004" a minimum operating pressure threshold
value.
7. To the supply pump “00GCF13 AP001” it is associated a pressure switch “00GCF10 CP001” with
minimum pressure in supply.
9. From the start of the supply pump “00GCF13 AP001” it starts the T7 time (settable) during which it
must be checked the measure of ORP "00GCF10 CQ001" and it must be enabled the counting of the
T8 time in case of exceeding the alarm threshold value. Upon exceeding the threshold value, and after
the elapsed time T8, the start-up procedure stops, in case if it hasn’t already been initiated the system
will stop with the emergency stop procedure.

10. T6 time having passed, the HPP “00GCF13 AP002” pump provided with inverter in the outlet ramp
and at a predetermined speed (speed expressed in %) and after 3 Sec the valve "00GCP31 aa202"
closes. The pressure switch "00GCF13 CP004" is provided with an alarm delay 5-10 seconds HPP T6B
at the start of the pump. In the lack of minimum pressure signal and elapsed T6B time the system stops
with alarm signalling.
11. At the closing of valve “00GCP33 AA202” open valve “00GCF12 AA204” and after the elapse of T7 5
Sec time the Booster pump “00GCF13 AP003” starts, being provided with inverter in outlet ramp and
having a pre-set speed (speed expressed in %).
12. In terms of the Booster pump there must be compared also the pressured related to the measurement
devices of the related pressures, namely, “00GCF13 CP007” aspiration and “00GCF13 CP101”
produced membrane.
13. At the closing of the “00GCP33 AA202” valve, check the conductivity measured by “00GCF13
CQ101”. Set a threshold value which when is reached, it opens valve “00GCF13 AA201” and after 2
seconds it closes “00GCF13 A202”
14. At the closing of “00GCP11 AA202” valve check the conductivity measured by “00GCF13 CQ101”.
Set a maximum threshold value based on which it is activated an alarm with a delay time of 15
minutes- T9. The set value mentioned at point 12 cannot be lower that the set value mentioned at point
13.
15. Being elapsed T8 time, adjust the speed of HPP “00GCF13 AP002” pump provided with inverter at a
load of 80/90% from the set value at the magnetic measuring device “00GCF13 CF001”.
17. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF13 CP101” and “00GCF13 CP102” there will be
compared the calculation of the values (PIT101 – PIT102 = DPI101). Set a threshold value DPI101 and
at osmosis in operation, set a T10 time. At exceeding the threshold value and after T10 of 15 minutes
elapses, activate a plant signalling with general alarm.
18. With the plant in operation under pressure transmitter “00GCF13 CP008” perform a calculation
comparison between the pre-set value and the measured during operation. Afterwards perform an

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

adjustment in terms of valve “00GFC13 AA301”, in case of gap that exceeds the 2% between the set
value and the identified measure.

21. At the signal of the pressure transmitter “00GCF13 CP101” set a threshold value for the maximum
operation pressure; in case this value is exceeded, an automatic blockage will take place. In case of
plant blockage, comply with the stopping procedure with no flow.

➢ Conductivity Measurement "00GCF10 CQ002" displays the value of water at inlet; for it must established
a minimum and maximum threshold value with alarm delay. At one or more lines in service perform a
delayed run alarm signal, without block and stop of lines.

➢ PH measurement "00GCF10 CQ003" displays the value of water at inlet; for it must established a
minimum and maximum threshold value with alarm delay.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

➢ Measuring Temperature "00GCF10 CT001" displays the temperature value of the inlet water; for it must
established a minimum and maximum threshold value with alarm delay. At one or more lines in service
perform a delayed run alarm signal, without block and stop of lines.

It then follows a microfiltration section (after the line supply pump "00GCF11 AP001") in which it must be
made a comparison between the pressure measurements placed between inlet and outlet, respectively, given by
the transmitters "00GCF13 CP002" and "00GCF13 CP004".

It must therefore video displayed the related values and the relative comparison of the product as ∆P obtained
from line A. Also, set a value where the line on duty, and in case of exceeding this value with delay there must
be performed a signalling of clogging in terms of the filtering cartridges.

5.6 STOP SEQUENCE OF REVERSE OSMOSI 1ST PASS LINE C

At the HSL level signal of the collection tank RO 1st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK there is no alarm, the
system remains in automatic mode and starts again at the signal of the minimum level LSL. If you want to
restart the plant despite the fact that the HSL level is reached you must hold on pressed the PUSH BUTTON.

Stopping conditions
1. The RO lines are stopped when the level reaches HSL in the RO 1st PASS WATER STORAGE
TANK
2. When the HHSL level is reached in the RO 1st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK
3. When the minimum level “L” is reached in the UF WATER STORAGE TANK

flushing) - “00GCF13 AA204” (inlet PX) - “00GCF13 AA301” (outlet PX) and “00GCF13 AA201”
(outlet permeate) close

In case of stop in terms of the lines without final flushing, it will be possible to stop in the same
time more lines which previously were in operation.

5.7 STOP CONDITIONS REVERSE OSMOSI 1ST PASS

As mentioned previously in Chapter 4 the reverse osmosis lines can work individually or simultaneously; in
pair in the case of low level LSL reached in the relevant tanks, or even all the three lines in the case of demand
from operator.

In the case of simultaneous operation of two lines, the second will be driven in the case of exceeding the
maintenance level LSL in the collecting tank of the first passage.

The operation of the second line should allow the restoration of the level reaching and exceeding the threshold
LSL value. In this case the second line which is supporting the first one must be stopped leaving in service the
first one that is already operational. If you were to replicate the above condition, in this case you will actuate
the second line by exchanging the operation with the previously stopped one.

Please find bellow an example.

Line ON Line LSL < LSL > LSL < LSL > LSL <
OFF Maintenance Maintenance Maintenance Maintenance Maintenance
Line A
Line B
Line C

At each stop of the line it will be possible to perform the Automatic Flushing if all conditions are valid.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

6 Operation procedure for Reverse Osmosis 2st Pass section

The lines of treatment for this section are three (3) and they are demanded to simultaneous operation up to two
(2) except that enable even the third line from the operator. All three lines will have enabling command 0-1 for
operation in which the zero position (0) disables any operating condition and / or washing.
In this case there will be only two lines available, however, though this disabling cannot be provided
simultaneously for all three lines, but only for maximum two. At least one line must always be considered on
duty.
The lines of operation should provide for the automatic exchange on every reboot, in such a way as to allow a
constant distributed operation.

The operation of this section is subordinated to the destination point (collection tank) that is to be chosen and
used. The choosing possibility are two (2), namely:
1. RO 2st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK
2. FINAL WATER STORAGE TANK (in the responsibility of the client)

In the second case it will be by-passed to the RO 2st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK in order to send the
water directly in the inlet of the EDI pumps, from the collector of the permeate lines to line RO2.
This will be possible through an exchange between the interception valves.
• 00GCF20 AA201 → Inlet valve at collection tank.
• 00GCF20 AA202 → Exchange valve for EDI pumps EDI
By reversing the drive of the above mentioned valves you will divert the permeate product of the three lines of
the RO 2st pass or to the tank or directly to the EDI pumps.

The operator can make the choice through a special on-screen control. In case of choosing the direct sending to
the EDI pumps and with empty tank, the latter shall have filling priority over the EDI lines. With one or more
RO 2st pass lines running if the tank is empty, at first you will have to fill, and when full the exchange valves
will be driven through the EDI pumps.

The following deviation valve for restoration in CIP

• 00GCF20 AA203 → Restoration valve CIP tank

With one or more RO 2st pass lines running you will have to provide for the filling of the CIP tank. Each time
you start one or more RO 2st pass lines the first water produced is to be used to fill the CIP tank, it takes
precedence over the other services and uses.
Once the tank is filled as described in the Chapter 6, the exchange valve AA203 00GCF20 will close by using
the special valve for the requested service.

6.1 START SEQUENCE OF REVERSE OSMOSI 2ST PASS LINE A

Case 1 Chapter 5 operation with RO 1st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK
If the level in the RO 1st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK has not reached L there is permission to RO 2nd
Pass lines.
If the level in RO 2st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK has not reached HSL there is permission to start line
RO2nd PASS.
If the level in RO 2st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK has not reached LSL there is permission to start the
second line RO 2nd PASS.
Otherwise it remains in standby and another section in automatic mode.
With all users in AUT position and plant running and with no active alarms.

Case 2 Chapter 5 operation with FINAL WATER COLLECTION TANK

If the level in the RO 1st PASS WATER STORAGE TANK has not reached L there is permission to RO 2nd
Pass lines.
If the level in FINAL WATER COLLECTION TANK has not reached HSL there is permission to start line
RO2nd PASS with one (1) active EDI line.
If the level in FINAL WATER COLLECTION TANK has not reached LSL there is permission to start the
second line RO 2nd PASS with two (2) active EDI lines.
Otherwise it remains in standby and another section in automatic mode.
With all users in AUT position and plant running and with no active alarms.

1. Enable for operation the RO 2nd Pass lines according on the demands from the level in the treatment
tank from downstream.
2. The operator chose the destination of treated water through valves “00GCF20 AA201” and “00GCF20
AA202” so the pre-chosen valve opens at the demand on duty of the line.
3. Open the automatic valves “00GCF21 AA201” - “00GCF21 AA203” - “00GCF21 AA204” e
“00GCF21 AA206”
4. After 3 Sec drive the supply pump “00GCF21 AP001” with Inverter under ascending slope and at a
pre-set speed (speed expressed in %) and the dosing pump “00GCN43/44 AP001” Caustic Soda in a
constant manner at a single load on the line in operation.
5. From the start of the supply pump “00GCF21 AP001”, it starts a T13 of 10 Sec (adjustable) in which it
must be checked the pressure to the instrument “00GCF20 CP001”, after T13 passes and with the
presence of the minimum threshold signal continue with the start-up procedure, otherwise it stops with
alarm.
6. After 5 Sec valve “00GCF21 AA206” closes. At the closure of the valve, the plant produces osmotic
water; the first water produced with a value higher than the one set on “00GCF21 CQ001” will be
discharge with valve “00GCF21 AA204”. At a conductivity inferior value, firstly open valve
“00GCF21 AA202” and after 2 Sec close valve “00GCF21 AA204”. Set a T14 time for a maximum

admissible time for the discharge in By-pass of the permeate. After such time elapses, the alarm will be
activated without blocking the plant.
7. After closing valve “00GCF21 AA204” set a T15 delay time to freeze the conductivity read. After time
elapses, it can be activated the control of the conductivity, for which it must be set a high value and a
T16 delay alarm without the blockage of the plant.
8. Being elapsed T13 time, adjust the speed of the supply pump “00GCF21 AP001” towards an inverter
with a load of 80/90% from a set value of the project’s supply load. In order to determine the supply
load, it must be made the sum of the load measuring devices FIT001 (outlet concentrate) and FIT002
(outlet permeate). To this sum it is associated the project’s load value, based on which the supply pump
must work on. The adjustment performed at 80/90% is defined as “Maintenance”, as described in
chapter 1.2 Levels of collection tanks.
9. In case of maximum requested load for low levels of collection tanks it is requested the maximum
admissible speed of the supply pump. It will be necessary to drive by inverter at 100% from the load
based frequency set by the magnetic measuring device.
10. Set the conductivity for the first discharge in progress, set another one with alarm during operation.
11. With the plant in operation and with valve “00GCF21 AA206” closed, check the conductivity value, at
exceeding of the threshold value and elapse of T15 the alarm will activate, without blocking the plant.
12. At the closing of valve “00GCF21 AA204” the produces osmotic water; the passing must be checked
towards the load measurement device “00GCF21 CF002” and a T16 time must be set. A low and high
threshold value is to be set for the elapse time of T16 and an alarm will be generated without plant’s
arrest.
13. At the closing of valve “00GCF21 AA204” the plant produces osmotic water; the passing must be
checked towards the load measurement device “00GCF21 CF001” and a T17 time must be set. A low
and high threshold value is to be set for the elapse time of T17 and an alarm will be generated without
plant’s arrest.
14. In case it is necessary to reintegrate CIP tank and maintain the line in operation, after changing valves
“00GCF21 AA204” by opening “00GCF21 AA202” it opens also valve “00GCF20 AA203” for the
reintegration. At the end of the reintegration, valve “00GCF20 AA203” closes and the destination of
the treated water is recovered, with the related valves.
15. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF21 CP001” and “00GCF21 CP004”, perform a
comparison of the values (PIT001 – PIT004 = DPI001) Set a threshold value DPI101 and at osmosis in
operation, set a T18 time. At exceeding the threshold value and after T18 of 15 minutes elapses,
activate a plant signalling with general alarm.
16. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF21 CP001” e “00GCF21 CP002” perform a
comparison of the values (PIT001 – PIT002 = DPI002) Set a threshold value and at osmosis in

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

operation, set a T19 time. At exceeding the threshold value and after T19 of 15 minutes elapses,
activate a plant signalling with general alarm.
17. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF21 CP002” e “00GCF21 CP004” perform a
comparison of the values (PIT002 – PIT004 = DPI003) Set a threshold value DPI003 and at osmosis in
operation, set a T20 time. At exceeding the threshold value and after T20 of 15 minutes elapses,
activate a plant signalling with general alarm.
18. Perform a calculation of the values associated to the load transmitters (FIT001 and FIT002) ) in order
to determine the recovery factor of the plant under reverse osmosis. Check the following calculation:
The value of FIT002 permeate load – value of FIT001 + FIT002 waste concentrated flow

FIT 002
100  N %
FIT 001  FIT 002
The obtained value N will be represented by a percentual factor and on the operating panel with the following
denomination “Recovery factor”

19. Set a threshold value for the recovery factor and afterwards perform the comparison with the measured
value. With osmosis in operation, set a T38 time. After the minimum and maximum threshold values
are exceeded and after T38 of 30 minutes duration elapses, perform plant signalling with general alarm.
Pre-establish a system that cannot set recovery values that exceed 85%
20. At the signal of the pressure transmitter “00GCF21 CP101” set a threshold value for the maximum
operation pressure; in case this value is exceeded, an automatic blockage will take place. In case of
plant blockage, comply with the stopping procedure with no flow.
21. The plant shall stop when the treated water storage tank is full.

must be checked the pressure to the instrument “00GCF20 CP001”, after T13 passes and with the
presence of the minimum threshold signal continue with the start-up procedure, otherwise it stops with
alarm.
6. After 5 Sec valve “00GCF22 AA206” closes. At the closure of the valve, the plant produces osmotic
water; the first water produced with a value higher than the one set on “00GCF22 CQ001” will be
discharge with valve “00GCF22 AA204”. At a conductivity inferior value, firstly open valve
“00GCF22 AA202” and after 2 Sec close valve “00GCF22 AA204”. Set a T14 time for a maximum

admissible time for the discharge in By-pass of the permeate. After such time elapses, the alarm will be
activated without blocking the plant.
7. After closing valve “00GCF22 AA204” set a T15 delay time to freeze the conductivity read. After time
elapses, it can be activated the control of the conductivity, for which it must be set a high value and a
T16 delay alarm without the blockage of the plant.
8. Being elapsed T13 time, adjust the speed of the supply pump “00GCF22 AP001” towards an inverter
with a load of 80/90% from a set value of the project’s supply load.
11. With the plant in operation and with valve “00GCF22 AA206” closed, check the conductivity value, at
exceeding of the threshold value and elapse of T15 the alarm will activate, without blocking the plant.
12. At the closing of valve “00GCF22 AA204” the produces osmotic water; the passing must be checked
towards the load measurement device “00GCF22 CF002” and a T16 time must be set. A low and high
threshold value is to be set for the elapse time of T16 and an alarm will be generated without plant’s
arrest.
13. At the closing of valve “00GCF22 AA204” the plant produces osmotic water; the passing must be
checked towards the load measurement device “00GCF21 CF001” and a T17 time must be set. A low
and high threshold value is to be set for the elapse time of T17 and an alarm will be generated without
plant’s arrest.
14. In case it is necessary to reintegrate CIP tank and maintain the line in operation, after changing valves
“00GCF22 AA204” by opening “00GCF22 AA202” it opens also valve “00GCF20 AA203” for the
reintegration. At the end of the reintegration, valve “00GCF20 AA203” closes and the destination of
the treated water is recovered, with the related valves.
15. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF22 CP001” and “00GCF22 CP004”, perform a
comparison of the values (PIT001 – PIT004 = DPI001) Set a threshold value DPI101 and at osmosis in
operation, set a T18 time. At exceeding the threshold value and after T18 of 15 minutes elapses,
activate a plant signalling with general alarm.
16. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF22 CP001” e “00GCF22 CP002” perform a
comparison of the values (PIT001 – PIT002 = DPI002) Set a threshold value and at osmosis in

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

operation, set a T19 time. At exceeding the threshold value and after T19 of 15 minutes elapses,
activate a plant signalling with general alarm.
17. At the signals of the pressure transmitters “00GCF2 2CP002” e “00GCF22 CP004” perform a
comparison of the values (PIT002 – PIT004 = DPI003) Set a threshold value DPI003 and at osmosis in
operation, set a T20 time.

20. At the signal of the pressure transmitter “00GCF22 CP101” set a threshold value for the maximum
operation pressure; in case this value is exceeded, an automatic blockage will take place. In case of
plant blockage, comply with the stopping procedure with no flow.
21. The plant shall stop when the treated water storage tank is full.

6.7 STOP CONDITIONS REVERSE OSMOSI 2ST PASS

At each stop of the line it will be possible to perform the Automatic Flushing if all conditions are valid.

6.8 FINAL CONTROL INSTRUMENTS RO 2ST PAS

At the outlet of the reverse osmosis sections RO 2st pass there is a series of instruments for treated water
analysis coming from the second passing.
In terms of the instrumentation, this is available for each of the three lines provided with reverse osmosis in
the second passing and it is to be chosen based on its function:

➢ Silica measuring device "00GCF30 CQ002A" displays the value of outlet treated water, it establishes a
minimum and maximum threshold value with alarm delay. With line A on duty, run the delayed alarm
signal, without block and stop of the lines.
➢ Silica measuring device "00GCF30 CQ002B" displays the value of outlet treated water, it establishes a
minimum and maximum threshold value with alarm delay. With line B on duty, run the delayed alarm
signal, without block and stop of the lines.
➢ Silica measuring device "00GCF30 CQ002C" displays the value of outlet treated water, it establishes a
minimum and maximum threshold value with alarm delay. With line C on duty, run the delayed alarm
signal, without block and stop of the lines.

7 Automatic Flushing and CIP system

The group consists of a tank with three (3) booster pumps, a filtration cartridge system and a magnetic
flowmeter. It performs the task of performing an automatic rinse at the end of the service of the lines from first
and second pass of the reverse osmosis membranes.
This group of equipment is reserved for operations of Automatic Flushing only in the reverse osmosis lines
(RO first and second pass), and in the CIP chemical cleaning operations (cleaning in place) for all constituent
sections of UF +RO1 and 2 + EDI. In the tank "00GCP11 BB001" it is gathered automatically the
demineralized water from the second pass under osmosis. The collected water is used for the Flushing of RO
lines in automatic mode, upon the stop of the same line after operation.
Being the only system for all RO lines, and being used in common at the end of the service, the Flushing
cycle should be performed according to the FIFO mode, in sequence one to the other, according to demand at
inlet.
Also in case of using this unit for CIP operations, being as said, in common to all the lines, it will not be
possible the use for the operations of Automatic Flushing. Therefore during a CIP cycle (for which the
operation is purely and entirely manual) you cannot perform this Flushing for both RO sections.
The pumps of the CIP and Flushing section are three (3) "00GCP11 / 12/13 AP001" and they work
individually in automatic exchange and active stand-by. Their operation is controlled by an inverter according
to the flow measured by the magnetic measuring device "00GCP10 CF001", and depending on the settings for
each individual line call for Flushing.

THE CIP UNIT IS IN COMMON TO UF-RO and EDI SECTIONS

It cannot be performed Flushing in RO Lines (I°pass e II°pass) simultaneously.
It cannot be performed Flushing and washing simultaneously in EDI lines.
It cannot be performed Flushing RO and EDI in case of chemical washing in UF lines.
At the end of the washing operations the unit may return on service of Flushing RO and EDI.
In the case of CIP unit use for Flushing cycle.
These will take place in sequence to each other in the order of inlet demand in accordance with the
FIFO method (First IN - First OUT).

THE CIP UNIT IS IN COMMON TO UF - RO and EDI SECTIONS

Chemical washing of individual lines in each section is purely a manual activity run by the
operator.
Provide appropriate control to video terminal supervision, for which it excludes in duty the unit
in question, for precisely performing the chemical washing.

On the duty of the CIP membranes in the preparation tank there are provided an electrical resistance and a
temperature controller "00GCB11CT001". Enable the operation of "00GCP11AC001" resistance only with
active CIP condition, and with active command of the operator. Adjust the temperature with a SET value.
Also, set a min / max value of temperature and relative alarm signalling in the event of late overcome.

7.1 OPERATION SEQUENCE FOR FLUSHING

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

The pumps from the CIP and Flushing section are three (3) "00GCP11 / 12/13 AP001" and they work
individually in automatic alternating exchange and in active stand-by. Their operation is controlled by an
inverter according to the flow measured by the magnetic device "00GCP10 CF001", and depending on the
settings for each individual line demanded for Flushing.

Provide appropriate on-screen control for enabling the operation of this unit, which in the "ON" position
allows the operations of Flushing the lines, while in the "OFF" it disables these operations. In the latter case,
the osmosis lines will stop without performing this operation.

At the end of each cycle of one or more Flushing you will have to provide the refill of the tank, in order to
have sufficient water for the next cycle. For this with one or more RO 2nd pass lines in operation, you will have
to provide for the refill of the said tank.

All users in AUT position

1. At the end of the sequences of operation of the RO lines of first and second passage, and therefore at
the completion of the shutdown procedure, if this unit is enabled to operation, the procedure starts.
2. The flushing sequence is subject to the presence of the related selector from the panel in AUT position
of one or more "00GCF20 AA203" pumps. In the event of positioning the selector in a different
position, the Flushing cycle cannot take place, in which case the cycle of the osmosis will end without
the Flushing.
3. The operation of the pumps will not be possible if the signal of LSL and LSLL minimum level is
missing.
4. Activate the related inlet valve of flushing per each section “Stopping sequence of reverse osmosis”
chapters 4 and 5.
5. After a T22 (5 sec) time, drive the “00GCP11/12/13 AP001” pump for a period of T12 (settable
individually for each RO line) and anyway with the emergency stop when the level of the related tank
arrives at LSLL.
6. Being elapsed T12 time, stop the pump that is in that moment in operation.
7. After a T23 (2 sec) time, close the valve previously open at point n. 2.

Procedure of tank filling

8. The “00GCF20 AA203” valve is driven at a value inferior to the threshold value of LSH, with the
condition that one or more lines at reverse osmosis RO2st pass are in operation.
9. The “00GCF20 AA203” valve is driven at a value inferior to the threshold value of LSL with the
condition that one or more lines at reverse osmosis RO2st pass are in operation.

10. At one or more lines at reverse osmosis RO 2st pass in operation and when the start-up of reverse
osmosis is completed, open valve “00GCF20 AA203”.
11. Being reached the LSH level, valve “00GCF20 AA203” will close, being replaced by the related valve
on duty connected to the line in operation.
12. The “00GCF20 AA203” valve will be able to remain open even if one or more lines are in operation
or if the active alarms are missing.
13. The missing filling will not allow the following Flushing, in this case the missing filling must be
signalled; with one or more RO lines in operation and valve “00GCF20 AA203” open, after being
elapsed a T24(30Min) time while the tank is not filled, it follows the signalling with alarm and
blockage of Flushing.

In case of very low level of LSLL, it will be activated the alarm with blockage of Flushing and of related
pumps.

With the selector of all “00GCF20 AA203” pumps not being in AUT position, there will be a signal (no alarm)
but for informing the lack of performance in terms of the final Flushing.
The volume of the water available in the collection tank is enough for the Flushing of 2/3 lines under osmosis.

In case of Flushing in progress and if LSL threshold level is reached and no RO line is in operation:
1. It is possible to terminate the Flushing in progress
2. It will not be possible to perform subsequent Flushing.
3. It must be signalled the low level of the tank

In case of Flushing in progress and if LSL threshold level is reached and at least one RO line in operation.
Condition in which one of the two RO 2st pass in operation is stopped:
1. It is possible to terminate the Flushing in progress
2. The tank will be filled even with the Flushing in progress.
3. If in the list it is provided a previous Flushing, this will be able to be performed when the tank is full.

In case of Flushing in progress and if LSL threshold level is reached and at least one RO 1st line in operation.
Condition in which all RO 2st pass lines are stopped :
1. It is possible to terminate the Flushing in progress
2. It will not be possible to fill the tank even if the Flushing is in progress.
3. It will not be possible to perform subsequent Flushing.

The dosing pumps will be stopped from operation with stop of all RO2st pass line with control under
supervision of operator, being reached the very low level of the collection tank or in case of malfunction
alarm.
The stopping of the pumps provides the following:
1. The RO2nd pass line/lines in operation are stopped when the full level of the tank is reached
2. All RO2nd pass lines are in in Stand-by or all excluded from operation.
3. RO2nd pass lines in stop status disables the power signal 4-20mA.
4. When the set threshold value is reached, the pump in operation is stopped.
5. The start-up control is disabled and the feedback signal is waited.
6. In this point the pump is stopped.

Control of tank filling pumps

For this dosage installation it is provided a couple of pumps for loading the chemical product. Such pumps are
driven from o local panel at which there are sent digital signals from the PLC. The signals in subject are two, the
one as maximum threshold value for filling at the reach of which the filling pumps are stopped.
The second one is the minimum threshold value before the temporized stop of the dosing pumps.

1. By the presence of the threshold HSL signal it cannot be enabled the pre-set digital outlet (Ex.
NaHSO3 xx1). When the level in the tank decreases under the pre-set HSL threshold, the digital outlet
must be activated.
2. With the presence of the threshold LSL signal, it must be enabled the pre-set digital outlet (Ex.
NaHSO3 xx2). When the level in the tank decreases under the pre-set LSL threshold, the digital outlet
must be activated.
3. With digital outlet (Ex. NaHSO3 xx2) enabled, it must be performed the signalling in supervision of
pre-alarm with indication of minimum spare.
4. The dosing pumps of each dosage station must be stopped when the LLSL threshold value is reached,
and the general alarm is enabled.
5. The chemical pumps will be able to load by outlet digital signal (Ex. NaHSO3 xx1). This signal will be
driven in case the threshold HHSL level is reached.

9 Managing alarms and ratings

The alarms must be managed and visualized on a specific synoptic page, on which they are acquired and reset
and a second page for display for the archive and history of alarms.
The alarms are divided in various categories below mentioned.
➢ Analytical instrumental (Measuring values of conductibility, pH, Redox, NUT, Temperature, etc.)
➢ Measuring instrumental (pressure – flows)
➢ Levels instrumental
➢ Pumps and motors in general
➢ Functional (periods of time and calculations in general)
➢ Others

Analytical instrumental pressures and flows

For the instrumental categories it must be provided for each value a minimum and maximum set, between
these two values of minimum and maximum and a reference value for the specific function.
See the below example:

Minimum Reference Maximum value

value
Measure of < 10µS/cm 50µS/cm > 100 µS/cm
conductibility
Measure of low < 50mc/h 105mc/h > 120mc/h
Measure of pressure < 1,5 Bar 2,5 Bar > 3,5 Bar

Levels instrumental
For the levels instrumental categories, the alarms will be appointed for the related set of lowest and highest
level as per the below mentioned table. See chapter 1.2 at page 7

Pumps and motors in general

The pump operation is conditioned by a series of signals and commands that allow the service, some utilities
are combined in pairs, for which in case of alarm or blocking of a pump the twin one comes into operation as
arranged in active stand-by.
This condition allows the specific function or line to enter in operation.
In other cases the service pump is single therefore it cannot take over the pump in an active basis, in this case
the function intended by the pump or in the case of service line cannot enter into service and therefore in these
cases the pump lock does not allow the specific service.

For this category alarms must be provided for :

1. Thermal shutter
2. Missing start-up
3. missing Local/Remote position
4. Virtual selectors for supervision of pumps authorization

Report these positions with the conditions in which these users have active spare or less, with the ratings of the
case.

Functional (period of time and calculations in general)

The functional alarms are related to the specific functions mentioned in the related paragraphs of this
document. They are essentially periods of time and calculations for which functions or alarms are activated or set
values or other factors, after a certain counted time and event.

Demineralization Plant Control Philosophy

These times or counts must be able to be freely set with a variable field in order to allow the supervision by an
operator who monitors the treatment system. They will have to find a place in special dedicated synoptic pages for
general settings of the plant’s operation.
Some of these counts generate an alarm which will cause a block with the stop of one or more treatment
sections, while other alarms only generate a generic alarm signaling.

Authorizations
There must be provided specific access keys for the operation, plant adjustment and alarms.
The intervention sections for the parameters are as following.
- Category A : scaling tools
- Category B : setting system parameters (PID and adjustments)
- Category C : setting and functional thresholds
- Category D : period of times and methods

These keys must be subdivided by access categories with various levels:

Frist level : Administrator
This level shall have full access to all categories

Second level; : System operator and process responsible

Authorized for categories B – C – D

Third levels : Operator, maintenance personnel

Authorized for categories C – D

Alarms management
When alarm is enabled you are able to view the event with special visual signalling, and store it in alarms
archive. If the event triggering the alarm fails the alarm and it resets itself, the event is kept in the archive alarm
event memory.
The emergency stop requires an immediate stop of all users:
When you press the ALARM RESET button the system turns back to normal working conditions, after
rebooting with the start button.
In case of alarm, the plant stops according to stop procedure.
➢ Remove the cause of the alarm
➢ Prest ALARM RESET button.

If the cause of the alarm was properly removed, the plant returns to the normal operation conditions;
otherwise, it will stop again.

MANAGEMENT OF ANALOGUE SIGNALS

In case of analogue signals from outside the range with and/or missing signal, it must be provided
with the alarm with signalling and eventual plant block, depending of the cases described in the
related sections of the operating cycles and plant lines.

If there are faults, malfunctions related to signals and / or instrumentation of devices in common
to several sections of the system (one collection water tank for multiple lines) you will have to
provide general alarm and section block.
