CULTURE OF COLOMBIA VS CULTURE OF GERMANY
The human beings are organized in societies that create a culture which show their
beliefs, values, feelings, norms, behaviors and artifacts that identify them. Many researches
about the culture have been done, providing theories that help to understand several cultures and
compare them. One of them is the Onion-model, which explain the culture from an intrinsic and
extrinsic perspective, considering different levels as artifacts and products situated in the outer
layer which belong to explicit culture; in the middle layer are the norms and values which
community holds; and finally in the inner layer people can see the basic assumptions and it
belongs to intrinsic culture. Al these aspects are considered for studying and classifying the
In view of the above, it is possible to analize and compare the Colombian and German
culture, in order to establish similarities and differences between them. So, Colombia is
considered Multi-active according to this model and Germany is located in the Linear Active
group.
Colombian people are talkative, relationships are best when they are face-to-face,
attaching great importance to feelings. On his behalf, German people are truthful rather than
diplomatic and do not fear confrontation, sticking to logic rather than emotions.
With regard to the time, the colombian people like to do many things at the same time
and are tend to feel confined by agendas. They are flexible and frequently change their plans in
order to accommodate other changes elsewhere. So, their concepts of time is non-linear. They
are less interested in schedules or deadlines than linear-actives. It is for this reason,
procrastination is common and the unpunctuality frequent. On the contrary, German people

consider very important to do an agend and follow it. They tend to be task-oriented, highly
organised planners who complete action-chains by doing one thing at a time. So, they are
punctual.
In the communicational aspect there are some differences between Colombian and
German people. For Colombian the conversation is roundabout and animated and they try to
speak and listen at the same time. Interruptions are frequent, pauses in conversation are few.

In conclusion, it is possible to analize the cultures following specific aspects as the Onion
Model establishes. So, people can understand their culture and other ones from a perspective
intrinsec and extrinsec in which the outer, middle and inner layers show the artefacts, product,
norms, values and basic assumptions that people have according their culture.
