CULTURE OF COLOMBIA VS CULTURE OF GERMANY

The human beings are organized in societies that create a culture which show their

beliefs, values, feelings, norms, behaviors and artifacts that identify them. Many researches

about the culture have been done, providing theories that help to understand several cultures and

compare them. One of them is the Onion-model, which explain the culture from an intrinsic and

extrinsic perspective, considering different levels as artifacts and products situated in the outer

layer which belong to explicit culture; in the middle layer are the norms and values which

community holds; and finally in the inner layer people can see the basic assumptions and it

belongs to intrinsic culture. Al these aspects are considered for studying and classifying the

cultures in three groups: Linear Active, Multi- Active and Reactive.

In view of the above, it is possible to analize and compare the Colombian and German

culture, in order to establish similarities and differences between them. So, Colombia is

considered Multi-active according to this model and Germany is located in the Linear Active

group.

Colombian people are talkative, relationships are best when they are face-to-face,

attaching great importance to feelings. On his behalf, German people are truthful rather than

diplomatic and do not fear confrontation, sticking to logic rather than emotions.

With regard to the time, the colombian people like to do many things at the same time

and are tend to feel confined by agendas. They are flexible and frequently change their plans in

order to accommodate other changes elsewhere. So, their concepts of time is non-linear. They

are less interested in schedules or deadlines than linear-actives. It is for this reason,

procrastination is common and the unpunctuality frequent. On the contrary, German people

consider very important to do an agend and follow it. They tend to be task-oriented, highly

organised planners who complete action-chains by doing one thing at a time. So, they are

punctual.

In the communicational aspect there are some differences between Colombian and

German people. For Colombian the conversation is roundabout and animated and they try to

speak and listen at the same time. Interruptions are frequent, pauses in conversation are few.

While, German speech is for information exchange and they talk and listen in equal

proportions. They dislike over-loquacity.

In conclusion, it is possible to analize the cultures following specific aspects as the Onion

Model establishes. So, people can understand their culture and other ones from a perspective

intrinsec and extrinsec in which the outer, middle and inner layers show the artefacts, product,

norms, values and basic assumptions that people have according their culture.
