EXPERIMENT 6 - CONCENTRATION AND LIQUID JUNCTION POTENTIAL

6.1 OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this experiment, students should be able to :

1. Determine the standard electrode potential of silver electrode (Ag/Ag+), EOAg+/Ag

2. Determine an activity of 0.01 M AgNO3 solution at room temperature

3. Determine liquid junction potential, Ej using concentration cell and transference

number.

6.2 MATERIALS

Argentum nitrate
Potassium nitrate

6.3 APPARATUS

Modified boiling tube

Calomel electrode
Voltmeter
U tube
Argentum plate
Sand paper

6.4 METHODS

1. The following solution prepared:

i. A solution of 0.1 M (100 mL) AgNO3
ii. A solution of 0.01 M (100 mL) AgNO3
iii. A solution of 100 mL of saturated KNO3 (add 3 scoop (spatula) of KNO3 in
100 mL of distilled water and stir)

2. Ag plate cleaned from dirt and oxide with sand paper.

3. The following cell was setup and their potential measured.

a) KNO3 (saturated) as a salt bridge

Ag (s) | AgNO3 (0.1 M) || KNO3 (saturated) | KCl (saturated), Hg2Cl2 | Hg (I)
Determine the electromotive force, Ecell(a)

b) KNO3 (saturated) as a salt bridge

Ag (s) | AgNO3 (0.01 M) || KNO3 (saturated) | KCl (saturated), Hg2Cl2 | Hg (I)
Determine the electromotive force, Ecell (b)

c) KNO3 (saturated) as a salt bridge

Ag (s) | AgNO3 (0.1 M) || AgNO3 (0.01 M) | Ag (s)
Determine the electromotive force, Ecell (c)
d) 0.1 M AgNO3 as a salt bridge
Ag (s) | AgNO3 ( 0.1 M) || AgNO3 (0.01 M) | Ag (s)
Determine the electromotive force, Ecell (d)
