In Great Britain after 1834 poor people who had no job or home went to live in a workhouse, where
they had to work for their food. They worked hard and did unpleasant jobs.
Women, children and men had to stay in different living and working areas and they could not
speak to one another. These people wore uniforms and this meant that everyone looked the same
and everyone outside knew they were poor and lived in a workhouse. The day at the workhouse
started at six o’clock in the morning and everyone was in bed by eight o’clock at night.
There was very little food and it didn’t taste good. Only porridge, soup, potatoes, cheese, bread and
little cooked meat were on the menu. No one wanted to live in such a terrible place!
