Mary: Hello, Mary Peterson speaking. 


John: Hello, Mary. It’s John Saunders. We met last Thursday at
the marketing conference.  I’m the Marketing Manager at Relton
Furnishings.  We exchanged business cards after your speech. 
Mary: Yes, that’s right. Of course I remember.  How are you,
John?
John: Very well, thank you. And you?
Mary: Yes, great thanks.

answering  the telephone (note: we never actually say it like
this!)

2. It’s John Saunders = This is John Saunders speaking

3. last Thursday = on Thursday last week

4. marketing = advertising and selling (encouraging


people to buy a product or service)

5. I’m the Marketing Manager = I am in charge of the


Marketing Department

6. Relton Furnishings = the name of a company that


makes or sells furniture

7. We exchanged (more formal) = We swapped

8. business cards = cards showing business names and


contact details
9. speech = public talk

10. that’s right = that’s correct (more formal)

11. And you? = And how are you?

12. great thanks. = I am very well, thank you
