    COLUMN DESIGN CALCULATIONS

    APARTMENT A

    Column Dimensions Thickness = 450 mm

    Width = 450 mm

    1. Determine PU from STAAD PU = 1934.688 kN

    Analysis

    2. Check if the column dimension is 𝑃𝑢 = 0.8 𝜙 [0.85𝑓′𝐶 (𝐴𝑔 − 𝐴𝑠𝑡) + 𝐴𝑠𝑡𝐹𝑦]

    above minimum required gross 1934.688 x 103 = 0.8 (0.65) [(0.85) (28)

    section based on the actual load (𝐴𝑔 − 0.01𝐴𝑔) + (420) (0.01𝐴𝑔)]

    carried by the column. Ag = 134,016.06 mm2

    Assume 450 mm by 450 mm column;

    Ag = 202,500 mm2

    134,016.06 < 202,500

    Therefore, column dimension is above

    minimum required gross section based on

    the actual load carried by the column.


    Formula:

    𝑃𝑢 = 0.8 𝜙 [0.85𝑓′𝐶 (𝐴𝑔 − 𝐴𝑠𝑡) + 𝐴𝑠𝑡𝐹𝑦]

    Where Ag = 202500 mm2

    1934.688 x 103 = 0.8 (0.65) [(0.85) (28)

    (202500 – 𝐴st) + (420) (𝐴st)]

    As = -2773.716 mm2

    3. Compute the required As Asreqd < As = ρAg = 0.01(202,500)

    = 2025 mm2

    Using 20 mm bars:

    As 2025
    N20 = = = 6.45 ≈ 8 pieces
    Ad 314.1593

    Use 8-20 mm bars

    4. Design of ties Use 10 ∅ mm size of ties

    (a.) 16db = 16 (20) = 320

    (b.) 48dt = 48 (10) = 480

    (c.) Least lateral column dimension = 400

    Therefore spacing of ties is 320 mm.


    5. Check Pumax = 0.8 ϕ [0.85f′C (Ag − Ast) + Astfy]

    Pumax = 0.8 (0.65) [(0.85) (28)

    (202,500 − 2025) + (420) (2025)]

    Pumax = 2923.3386 kN

    Pumax > Pu

    Therefore, column is capable to carry the

    axial load
