NETWORK TYPES
281 launched LTE-Advanced or LTE-Advanced Pro networks

GSA’s NTS database shows: LTE-Advanced and LTE-Advanced Pro networks, by region

• 886 operators investing in LTE networks* worldwide at the

end of November 2018, of which there are 745
commercially launched LTE networks (FWA or mobile),
launched by 710 unique operators
• 212 operators hold licences to use spectrum for TDD
services, 148 of which have launched services
• 326 operators investing in LTE-Advanced or LTE-Advanced
Pro technologies, of which 281 have launched networks.
156 operators are known to be investing in one or more
LTE-Advanced Pro technologies
• 197 operators investing in 226# 5G mobile and 5G FWA
networks (in the form of tests, trials, planned and pilot © GSA 2018
deployments, and launches) at mid December 2018
• By the time of the database update 14 operators had
announced pre-commercial deployments/very limited
availability launches/non-3GPP-compliant/3GPP compliant * including mobile and FWA broadband services; counting operators’ LTE
mobile and FWA networks separately
launches of 5G or 5G FWA services. # counting 5G mobile and 5G FWA investments separately; note there might
be overlap of core and some RAN infrastructure where an operator
develops and launches both FWA and mobile 5G services

NETWORK FEATURES
139 operators investing in NB-IoT and/or LTE-M; 99 commercially launched networks

The NTS database tracks various LTE network technologies:

• 4x4 MIMO – 132 operators identified as investing, of which 70 have deployed/launched the technology within their
commercial networks
• 8T8R MIMO and Massive MIMO – 40 operators identified as investing in these technologies
• 256 QAM in the DL – 105 operators identified as investing, of which 59 have deployed / launched the technology within
their commercial networks.

And numerous key LTE service features:

• 29 operators investing in LAA (6 with launched networks); 11 operators investing in LTE-U (3 with deployed/launched
networks); 3 operators investing in LWA (one launch so far)
• 241 operators investing in VoLTE, with 178 launched networks
• 21 operators investing in Enhanced Voice Services (EVS), including 18 launches
• 5 launched/deployed eMBMS services
• 130 operators investing in NB-IoT with 74 deployed or launched networks
• 57 operators investing in LTE-M with 28 deployed or launched networks.

LTE SPECTRUM BANDS
Band 3 remains by far the most-used LTE spectrum band worldwide

GSA’s NTS database has counts of LTE The main FDD and TDD spectrum bands used for LTE
network investments in 24 different
bands/groups of bands:
• 1800 MHz (Band 3) remains the most-used band
for LTE (324 launched networks)
• 800 MHz (Band 20) is in second place (182
launched networks)
• 2.6 GHz (Band 7) is the third most popular band,
used in 165 commercial LTE networks
Spectrum used for 5G development is also
tracked: spectrum in the 1 GHz to 6 GHz © GSA 2018

range is being most used. GSA has identified

89 operators that are using spectrum in this
range for trials, plan to use it for trials, or are
licensed to use it.

DEFINITIONS

GSA uses the following launch status definitions for technologies and services, in order of
investment maturity:

• Licensed to test/trial: but tests have not started yet.

• Pre-commitment evaluation/testing/trialling: pre-commitment trials (even if in a live network – the technology might be
subsequently removed). Includes early demonstrations.
• Planned: the operator has announced an intention to launch but has not yet started deploying the network/service and does
not have a licence (if one is needed).
• Licensed: means the operator has a licence to use the spectrum band for commercial services. Variations include licensed for
mobile broadband, licensed – technology neutral, licensed for LTE, licensed for 5G, or licensed for 2G or 3G.
• Deploying or piloting: the operator has started actual construction/installation/deployment; and may be piloting the network
in selected locations.
• Deployed: installed widely in the network, even if not used for commercial service yet, but will stay in the network and is
expected to be used for commercial services.
• Launched (limited availability): commercial services are available for customers to use, and some devices are available for
them to use, but availability is restricted to selected geographical areas, or to selected groups of customers, or by/to small
numbers of devices.
• Launched: services are widely available geographically, and widely available to customers.
