Types of Processors
A processor is the logic circuitry that responds to processes the basic instructions that drive a
computer. When input is given to a computer, it processes it with the help of processor and
give output. It is basically a small chip that resides in computer is also known as CPU.
Types of processors
Pentium
Celeron
Athlon
Power PC
Strong-arm(PDA)
Crusoe(laptops)
SPARK(workstations)
Pentium
The Pentium is widely used personal computer microprocessor from the Intel Corporation. It
was first offered in 1933. This was replaced by P5 which was offered in 1993 as a replacement.
This type of processor was available between the speeds of 60mhz and 300mhz.
Celeron
In early 1988, Intel was having a hard time selling the Pentium, which at the time was
expensive. Many users brought AMD K6-233(a type of computer) which offered very good
performance at a moderate price. Thus Intel created the brand new CPU called Celeron, which
was similar to Pentium but lacks L2 cache. Later in 1998, Intel replaced their Pentium with
Celerons. The Celeron runs at 266 to 300 MHz.
Athlon
It was a popular microprocessor from AMD that is used in many personal computers, was the
first processor to be shipped in a gigahertz . It was introduced in 1999. It runs with the speed of
1 GHz to 1.33 GHz.

Power PC
Power PC is a microprocessor architecture that was developed jointly by Apple, IBM, and
Motorola. The power PC employs reduced instructions set computing (RISC). Today power PC
chips are used in diverse applications including internetworking equipment, routers, telecom
switches and industrial robotics. Since 2006 it is known as power ISA.
Strong arm
Also known as personal digital assistant (PDA) is a computer that fits in the palm of hand to
collect such information as contacts, appointments, files, and programs. The term PDA was first
used on 1992 while describing the Apple Newton. Nearly all PDAs have ability to connect to the
internet. The “PDA phone” is now called as “Smartphone”. These processors are low power
consumption and can extend battery life.
Crusoe
It is also called as laptop. Alternatively referred as a notebook, a laptop has all the same
abilities as a desktop, but is small enough for easy mobility. Today most of the laptops are
becoming thinner and lighter to help compete with other devices, such as tablets. The IBM
5100 was the first portable computer, which was released on 1975(that was not that time
considered as laptop). Later Osborne 1 was introduced on 1981, and that was considered as a
laptop.
SPARC
SPARC stand for (“scalable processor architecture”).it is also known as workstations. It is based
on reduced instruction set computing (RISC). SPARC has become a widely used architecture for
hardware used with UNIX based operating systems. It was incepted in 1987. A workstation has
no important function, it is only needed for a single user to connect to the network.
