1 Scope

This Specification defines the mandatory requirements for a custom built, high voltage
stand-alone outdoor, full voltage, non-reversing motor controller built with either the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) or North American (NA) based
Standards.

This controller shall be used to control surface and submersible motors in remote
locations where it is not feasible to build an air-conditioned electrical building.

This specification does not apply to controllers in crude oil service.

2 Conflicts and Deviations

2.1 If there are any conflicts between this Specification and associated purchasing,
project or engineering documents, this specification shall take precedence.

2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this Specification in writing to the Company
or Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company waiver procedure.

2.3 The designation “Commentary” is used to label a sub-paragraph that contains


comments that are explanatory or advisory. These comments are not mandatory,
except to the extent that they explain mandatory requirements contained in this
SAMSS.

4 Definitions

Definitions of terms within this Specification shall be as per IEC 60050 unless specified
otherwise.

Buyer: Either the owner or an organization representing the owner for the purchase
and installation of the equipment.

Compression connectors: Connectors that are compressed onto the conductor using a
die and high mechanical force. The process is not reversible and the connector becomes

a permanent part of the conductor. The connector can only be removed from the
conductor by either cutting the conductor or cutting the connector.

Conductor: All material, devices and parts that are expected to carry current as part of
their normal function (e.g., cable, bus, relay contacts, terminal block studs, etc.).

Crude Oil Service: Directly producing crude oil or producing water in support of
crude oil production.

Grounding and Earthing: are synonymous.

Line: The terminal of the device to which the source of the voltage/power is connected.

Low voltage: A voltage level of 1000 volts or less.

Main Circuit: All the conductive parts of an assembly included in a circuit which is
intended to transmit electrical energy to the connected load.

Mechanical connectors: Connectors that are attached onto the conductor using,
generally, a standard tool. The process is reversible and the connector can be removed
from the conductor without cutting the conductor or the connector.

Owner: Company who ultimately owns the equipment and the company whose facility
the equipment will be installed.

Raceways: Enclosed channels for housing and protecting electric wires and cable.
This term includes rigid and flexible conduit.

Specification: The main body (i.e., Sections 1 to 18) and applicable Supplement and
does not, for example, include the information contained within the Data Schedules.

Stainless steel: Either 316 series or 317 series stainless steel material.

Supplement: Is meant to refer to the applicable “North American Supplementary


Requirements” or “International Electrotechnical Commission Supplementary
Requirements.” These supplementary requirements are throughout the Specification and
presented under the abbreviated heading of “(NA Supplement)” and “(IEC Supplement).”

Switch-disconnector: A load break switch used to isolate the controller from the supply.

Wireways: Troughs, channels, etc., with or without hinged or removable covers, for
housing and protecting electric wires and cable.

5 General

5.1 Terms in bold font are defined within Section 4.

5.2 Whenever this specification requires compliance to a third party document


(e.g., IEEE, UL, IEC, etc.), this document shall be the edition that was in effect
on the date of the Quotation Request.

5.3 This specification shall take precedence over any referenced third party
document.

5.4 Oil switching devices shall not be used in any circuits.

5.5 All documentation shall be in English.

5.6 All temperatures expressed within this specification are in Celsius units.

5.7 Adhesives shall not be used to control, restrict or prevent movement


(e.g., attachment of nameplates, wire straps, wireways, gaskets, etc.) and shall
not be used to maintain a seal (e.g., interconnection of gasket surfaces).

5.NA3 Clearance and creepage distances and spacings shall meet the requirements
of NEMA ICS 1.

6 Service Conditions

The controller shall be designed to operate continuously under the following conditions:

6.1 Air Temperature

6.1.1 Ambient is a maximum of 55 degrees exterior, 65 degrees interior*.

6.1.2 Ambient is a minimum of 0 degrees.

6.1.3 Average ambient temperature, measured over a period of 1 month, is a


maximum of 45 degrees exterior, 55 degrees interior*.
* Assumes 10 degrees internal rise due to solar exposure. The manufacturer
shall also add an additional temperature rise to account for the heat
contribution of the internal equipment.

6.2 Relative Humidity

6.2.1 For a period of 24 hours, average does not exceed 95%.

6.2.2 For a period of 1 month, average does not exceed 90%.

6.2.3 May be temporarily 100%.

6.3 Altitude is under 1000 meters, for higher altitudes apply the de-rating factor.

6.4 Frequent sand and dust storms.

7 Rating

7.1 The rating of the controller shall not be dependent on forced-air systems.

7.2 The service voltage and current requirements are specified within Data Schedule 1.
The rating shall be suitable for operation continuously at any extreme of the supply
transformer taps. The overall controller shall be continuously rated as follows:
Commentary Note 7.2:

Note the requirement for a voltage regulator/controller in Section 13. This allows
all control and auxiliary voltages within the controller to be adjusted to a nominal
120 VAC when the taps on the supply transformer are varied.

7.2.1 Rated Operational Voltage (minimum): 1.5 kV

7.2.2 Rated Current, (minimum): 200 A

7.NA1 BIL rating (minimum) - 60 kV (with the exception of the control


power transformer).

7.IEC1 Rated Lightning Impulse - Withstand Voltage (minimum) - 60 kV


(with the exception of the control power transformer).

8 Enclosure

8.1 General

8.1.1 The controller shall be suitable for direct exposure to


solar/environmental effects (i.e., the Owner shall not be required to
provide any sun shading for the controller).

8.1.2 The exterior of controller shall contain no indicators, controls or


penetrations.

8.1.3 The exterior of controller shall be fabricated from a minimum 11 gauge


(or 2.31 mm) sheet metal as follows:
a) If “severe corrosive environment such as offshore, within one km
from sea or corrosive chemical plants”, is specified within Data

Schedule 1, the sheet metal, and all external hardware shall be


stainless steel.
b) If Data Schedule 1 specifies that the controller will not be
installed within a severe corrosive environment, the sheet metal
shall be either stainless steel, as specified above, or carbon steel
painted per the “Paintings and Coatings” section below.

8.1.4 Continuous seal welding shall be used to seal all exterior seams.

8.1.5 The entire enclosure shall be factory assembled (i.e., no field assembly
of the enclosure is permitted).

8.1.6 The only entry into enclosure shall be via a single exterior door.
All equipment and terminations shall be front accessible through this
door. This door shall have the following characteristics:
a) The door seal design shall assure a dust-tight door edge seam.
The door or enclosure shall be fitted with a continuous, molded,
replaceable gasket material suitable for a minimum temperature
range of 0 degrees to 90 degrees. Attachment of the gasket shall
not be dependent upon adhesives.
b) Shall have heavy-gauge, continuous, full length hinge supports or
a minimum of 4 hinges.
c) Shall have a 3-point latching mechanism operated by a
padlockable handle. Latching rods shall have rollers on the ends.

8.1.7 The exterior roof shall be of double roof construction with the
following characteristics:
a) There shall be a minimum of 25 mm of air space between the
controller enclosure roof and exterior roof. The ventilation
design shall allow natural (i.e., non-forced) air movement to
remove accumulated heat from the air space.
b) The exterior and internal roof of the enclosure shall not have any
ridges or obstructions to accumulate dust or moisture.
c) Roof panel(s) shall be sloped approximately 15 degrees
downwards towards the back of the controller, to minimize dust
and moisture accumulation.
d) A minimum length of 4 inches drip shield shall be provided over
the upper door seam to protect the door hardware from dripping

water and settling dust.

8.1.8 Space shall be provided for power, grounding, control, and


communication cabling to enter/exit via the bottom vertical side
of the back of the enclosure. This space shall encompass a height
up to 300 mm from the bottom of the panel and a minimum width of
300 mm. No knockouts or openings shall be provided by the Vendor.
Opening/penetrations in this space will be performed by the Buyer in
the field. Appropriate raceway/wireways shall be provided within the
enclosure to allow the field cables to be routed to the termination
locations within the enclosure.

8.1.9 Permanent roof lifting attachments/lugs shall be provided for lifting the
entire unit without distortion of any part of the enclosure.

8.1.10 The enclosure structural design shall be suitable for installation by the
Buyer on either a solid concrete or steel plate base or pedestal type
concrete supports (i.e., one on each corner of the enclosure).

8.1.11 Where the enclosure, and devices mounted within the enclosure are of
dissimilar metals, the contact points shall be suitably protected against
galvanic action where dissimilar metals are in contact.

8.2 Compartments

8.2.1 There shall be two compartments within the controller, one for the
power components and connections (e.g., load break switch-
disconnector, power fuses, contactor, instrument and potential
transformers, current transformers, etc.) and another for the low
voltage equipment and connections.

8.2.2 The low voltage compartment shall be accessible by opening the


exterior door. The power component compartment shall be accessible
by opening a hinged door within the low voltage compartment.
This door shall be interlocked as indicated in Section 12.

8.2.NA1 With the controller exterior compartment door open, the controller
shall, as a minimum, meet the requirements and test criteria for a
Type 1, ventilated enclosure as defined by NEMA ICS 6.

(IEC Supplement)

8.2.IEC1 With the controller exterior compartment door closed, the


controller shall, as a minimum, meet the requirements and test

criteria for IP2X degree of protection as defined by IEC 60529.

8.3 Painting and Coatings

8.3.1 If the exterior of the controller is constructed of carbon steel it should


be painted per SAES-H-101V. Color shall be white.

8.3.2 Interior surfaces shall be cleaned, primed and painted with the
Vendor's preferred finish with a minimum paint thickness of 5-mil dry
thickness. Color shall be white.

8.3.3 Internal to the controller, all unpainted hardware shall be of a non-


oxidizing or non-corrosive material (e.g., stainless steel, brass, etc.) or
shall be plated with a material which will inhibit oxidation and
corrosion (e.g., zinc, cadmium, chromium, etc.).

8.4 Space Heater System

8.4.1 Power for the space heater system shall be supplied from the line side
of the switch-disconnector for the controller. Since the space heater
system will be energized even with the switch-disconnector open, the
space heater system shall be guarded to prevent accidental contact of
the energized parts with a person's finger or a small tool. As specified
within Section 16, “Warning” signs shall be mounted within the panel.

8.4.2 Space heater system shall be designed to operate continuously.

8.4.3 Each space heater system [i.e., enclosure and motor (if applicable)]
shall be protected with dedicated circuit breaker.

8.4.4 An ammeter shall be provided to monitor the current of each of the


space heater systems.

8.4.5 The ammeter and circuit breaker for each heater system shall be
grouped together.

8.4.6 The enclosure shall contain space heater(s) to eliminate condensation


when the contactor poles are open. The system shall have the
following characteristic:
a) At least one space heater shall be provided within each of the low
voltage compartment and the power component compartment.
Self-reset cut-out or adjustable thermostat high temperature cut-
out(s) shall be installed in the circuit(s) to disconnect the space
heater(s) above the cut-out temperature rating. The cutout(s)

shall be installed in the vicinity of the equipment with the lowest


heat tolerance (e.g., electronic equipment). The rating of the cut-
out shall be approximately 35 degrees.
c) Space heaters shall be guarded to protect from accidental
personnel contact.
d) Space heaters shall be accessible without having to remove or
disconnect other equipment or devices.
e) Heating elements shall be rated for continuous duty and, for
extended service life, shall be rated for operation at a voltage of
approximately twice the supply voltage (e.g., with a supply
voltage of 120 VAC, heater rating shall be either 208 V, 230 V,
240 V, etc.).
f) The space heater system shall be designed to function
continuously at any point over the full tap range of the supply
transformer (refer to Data Schedule 1).

8.4.7 If the controller is for a non-submersible pump, and if specified in


Data Schedule 1, a motor space heater control system shall be
provided. This system shall be designed to energize the motor space
heater when the contactor poles are open. Dedicated terminals shall be
provided within the low voltage compartment to which the field motor
space heater leads will be connected.

9 Conductors

9.1 General

9.1.1 Phase arrangement of bus and connections shall be either A, B, C, or 1,


2, 3, counting from front-to-back, top-to-bottom, or left-to-right, as
viewed from the front of the controller.

9.1.2 Adhesives shall not be used to attach wiring, raceways, wireways, etc.

9.2 Material

9.2.1 All conductors shall be copper, silver or alloys of these materials with
the following exceptions:
Exceptions:

a) Parts which are internal to a pre-manufactured device (e.g., internals of


contactor, circuit breaker, etc.).

b) Aluminum alloy connectors may be used if the connector is an integral

part of a pre-manufactured device (e.g., molded case circuit breaker


lugs) and is designed by the manufacturer to be suitable for copper
conductors.

c) Plating of a non-copper, or silver or copper/silver alloy conductors


material is acceptable.

9.2.2 Main circuit bus mating surfaces shall be silver or tin-plated.

9.2.3 Bus stand-off insulators or insulating/isolating material shall be either


ceramic or other low-hygroscopic, high-temperature, flame-retardant,
non-tracking material.

9.2.4 All wiring shall have the following characteristics:


a) Conductors shall consist of a minimum of 7 strands of copper
wire.
b) Minimum conductors size shall be 2.5 mm² or 14 AWG.
c) Primary insulation shall:
i) For low voltage wire/cable:
1) Have a minimum rating of 600 V phase-to-earth.
2) Have a minimum thickness of 0.38 mm (15 mils).
3) Have a minimum continuous operating temperature
rating of 90 degrees or higher.
Exception:

Conductors that terminate to the enclosure space heaters


shall have a minimum temperature rating of 150 degrees.

ii) For wire/cable connected to the main circuit:


1) Have a minimum rating of 5 kV phase-to-earth.
2) Have a minimum continuous operating temperature
rating of 90°C.
iii) Be of thermoplastic or cross-linked synthetic polymer
material.
iv) Be of flame retardant construction.
d) Insulation color shall be as follows:
i) Ground/earth: Solid green or green/yellow striped
ii) Neutral: White.

9.2.5 Insulated wire/cable insulation temperature rating and ampacity shall


be selected to match the temperature rating of the devices to which the
wire/cable is terminated.

9.2.NA1 Low voltage wiring shall be NFPA 70; Type SIS, XHHW or
THHN/THWN.

(IEC Supplement)

9.2.IEC1 Low voltage wiring shall be 85 degree rated meeting the


requirements of IEC 60227.

9.3 Terminations

9.3.1 Conductors shall be terminated using compression connectors or


ferrules as specified below. For CT secondary circuits, the
connector/termination design shall ensure the termination will not
come off of a loose connection and only ring type connector shall be
used.
Exception:

Terminations to integral parts or components of manufactured equipment


(e.g., molded case circuit breakers, contactors, switches, etc.).

9.3.2 Shifting or turning of a connector (e.g., for a one hole connector) shall
be prevented by a mechanical means independent of the degree of
compression provided by the bolt or stud. Shifting or turning shall be
prevented by use of multiple screws or studs; by shoulders or mortises;
by a dowel pin, lug or offset; by a connecting strap fitted to an adjacent
part; or by some other equivalent method.

9.3.3 The size and number of main circuit supply conductors, and who
provides them, are indicated within Data Schedule 1.

9.3.4 Each wire/cable shall be identified with a thermoplastic, slip-on


wire/cable marker at each termination point. The marking system shall
be as follows:
a) The number/identifier for each wire/cable shall be unique.
b) The number/identifier shall be identical at each end of the
wire/cable.
c) Wire/cable markers shall have permanently printed characters.
d) Snap-on and adhesive type markers are prohibited.

e) Correspond to the manufacturer's drawings.

9.3.5 Shorting type terminal blocks shall be provided for current transformer
circuits. These terminal blocks shall be mounted within the low
voltage compartment.

9.3.6 low voltage circuit terminal blocks used to terminate the field cables to
the controller shall have the following characteristics:
a) Operational voltage rating shall be a minimum of 600 V.
b) Continuous current rating shall be a minimum of 10 A.
c) Be either panel mounted, rail mounted
d) Be open style with screw terminals
e) Rated for a 90 degrees.
Exception:

Terminal blocks for low level signals (e.g., digital communication,


analog or digital instrumentation signals, etc.).

9.3.7 There shall be a maximum of two (2) connectors per termination point
and only if the termination point is approved for two (2) connectors by
the manufacturer.

9.3.8 Where compression connectors or compression ferrules are used,


there shall be a maximum of one (1) conductor per connector/ferrule.

9.3.9 Mechanical connectors shall not be used as Terminations.

9.3.NA1 Terminal blocks shall also meet the requirements of NEMA ICS 4.

9.3.IEC1 Terminal blocks shall also meet the requirements of IEC 60947-7-1.

10 Grounding (Earthing)

The enclosure shall be equipped with a ground bus. The continuous current rating of
this ground bus shall be the same as the continuous phase current rating of the
controller. This bus shall be bonded to the enclosure and shall be used to terminate all
equipment and reference connections that are required to be grounded. The ground bus
shall be equipped with two (2), compression connectors, NEMA two-hole pattern, sized
for a 70 mm² (2/0 AWG) conductor, one at each end of the bus for Buyer termination.

11 Switching Devices

11.1 General

Controller isolation shall be by a switch-disconnector as described below.

11.2 Switches

11.2.1 A switch-disconnector shall be supplied which will isolate the


contactor and fuses from the line side power feed of the power
transformer. This switch shall have the following characteristics:
a) Be three-pole, two position load-break type.
b) Be visible air-break type.
c) Only be manually operable with the door to the power
compartment in the closed, secured position. The physical
opening should be visible through the internal door.
d) The operating handle shall be directly mechanically connected to
the switch irrespective of the position of any compartment
doors/covers.
e) The operating handle shall be padlockable in the OPEN
(switched off) position.
f) It shall not be necessary to remove the padlock(s) from the
operating handle to open or close the power compartment door.
g) The operating mechanism shall be equipped with an electrical
interlock that will trip the contactor prior to the opening of the
load-break switch contacts.
h) When the switch-disconnector is in the OPEN position, the only
voltage present inside the controller shall be at the incoming
terminals of the switch-disconnector and the space heater
circuit. All these live connections shall be guarded to prevent
accidental contact with a person's finger or small tool.

11.4 Contactors

11.4.1 The main circuit contactor shall have the following characteristics:

11.4.2 All control and auxiliary circuit connections to the main circuit
contactor shall be via plug/receptacle assemblies.

11.4.3 The contactor drop-out voltage shall not be greater than 70% of rated
voltage of the contactor coil which is holding the main poles closed.

11.4.4 The contactor shall withstand 110% of rated voltage continuously,


without damage to operating coils, and close successfully at 80% of
rated voltage.

11.4.NA1 Contactors shall meet the requirements of NEMA ICS 2.

11.4.NA2 All auxiliary contacts shall be heavy-duty, minimum A600 and/or


P600 rating per NEMA ICS 5, Part 1.

11.4.IEC1 Contactors shall meet the requirements of IEC 60470.

11.4.IEC2 All auxiliary contacts shall have the following characteristics:


a) Meet the requirements of IEC 60947-5-1.

12 Interlocks

12.1 Mechanical interlocks shall be provided to prevent:

12.1.1 The power compartment door from being opened if the switch-
disconnector is closed. This interlock shall be defeatable with the use
of a standard tool (i.e., screw-driver, wrench, etc.).

12.1.2 The switch-disconnector from being closed if the power compartment


door is open, or not secured.

12.2 Electrical interlocks shall be provided to prevent:

12.2.1 The contactor from being energized unless all the plug/receptacle
connections between the control and auxiliary circuits and the
contactor, have been engaged.

12.2.2 Backfeeding of the main circuit from the control circuit when the
control circuit is energized from an external source through the
plug/receptacle arrangement. This interlock should function to open
the control power secondary circuit between the transformer secondary
terminals and the test plug.

12.2.3 The contactor from being energized unless the switch-disconnector


poles are in the fully connected position.
Exception:

If the contactor is being energized from the external source described


in Section 12.

13 Protection, Control and Metering

13.1 General

13.1.1 The controller shall be designed to allow the energization of the


control circuit while the switch-disconnector is in the OPEN position.
During this testing, 120 VAC shall be supplied by the Buyer, to the
controller, via a receptacle. The mating plug for the receptacle shall be
installed within the controller and shall be interlocked as described
within Section 11.

13.1.2 The main circuit contactor control circuit shall be designed such that
no internal single-point failure (e.g., open circuiting of an economizing
resistor):
a) Will result in uncontrolled opening-closing of the contactor poles

or
b) Will allow the contactor closing coil to remain energized without
the poles reaching their fully closed position.

13.1.NA1 All pilot devices shall meet the requirements of NEMA ICS 5,
Part 5 and shall have the following characteristics:
a) Pilot devices shall be heavy-duty oil tight Type 4/13 as per
NEMA 250.
b) Contact ratings shall be a minimum of A600/P600.

13.1.IEC1 All control circuit devices and switching elements shall have the
following characteristics:
a) Meet the requirements of IEC 60947-5-1.
b) Manually operated control circuit device actuators shall be
IP 66/65 as per IEC 60529.
c) Shall have a minimum Rated Insulation Voltage of
660 VAC/VDC.
d) Shall have a minimum Rated Operational Voltage of

13.2 Voltage Regulation

13.2.1 An automatic or manual voltage regulation/control device shall be


installed to ensure all control and auxiliary voltages within the
controller can be adjusted to a nominal 120 VAC as the taps on the
supply transformer is varied over the entire tap range. The tapping
range of the supply transformer is indicated within Data Schedule 1.

13.2.2 The control circuit or manual voltage regulation design shall allow the
control voltage to be adjusted to the nominal 120 VAC value while the
switch-disconnector is in the open position.

13.3 Fuses

13.3.1 All fuses shall have the following characteristics:


a) Be of the non-renewable, non-expulsion type.
b) Fuse body shall not be of glass.

13.3.2 Main circuit fuses shall have the following additional characteristics:
a) Be fixed-mounted (i.e., bolted line and load connections, or
within clips).
b) Be current limiting, non-expulsion.
c) The rated voltage of the fuses shall be a maximum of 5.5 kV.
d) The fuse mounting bracket shall be field adjustable to
accommodate fuse sizes at least two sizes above and at least two
sizes below the fuse rating provided.
e) Fuses with striker pins shall not be used.

13.3.3 All low voltage fuses supplied in the control and auxiliary circuits
shall be rated a minimum of 250 V.

13.3.NA1 High voltage fuses shall have the following characteristics:


a) Fuses shall be of the “Power” type meeting the requirements
of IEEE C37.53.1.
b) Fuses shall be Class R rated and shall meet the requirements
of IEEE C37.46.
c) Power fuses provided for non-motor feeder circuits
shall be Class E rated and shall meet the requirements of
IEEE C37.46.

13.3.NA2 Low voltage fuses shall have the following characteristics:


a) Shall meet the requirements of UL 198C, UL 198D or
UL 198E.
b) Shall be cartridge type fuses of the ferrule-type design.

13.3.IEC1 High voltage fuses shall meet the requirements of IEC 60282-1 and
have the following characteristics:

a) Fuses shall be of the “General Purpose” type.


b) Unless specified otherwise within this Specification, fuse
selection for motor applications shall be based upon
IEC 60644.
c) Unless specified otherwise within this Specification, fuse
selection for transformer applications shall be based upon
IEC 60787.

13.3.IEC2 The low voltage fuses shall meet the requirements of IEC 60269-1,
IEC 60269-2 and IEC 60269-2-1 and shall be of the “cylindrical
cap” design as described within IEC 60269-2-1.

13.4 Protective Relaying

13.4.1 Protective relays and associated devices shall be one of the types
indicated within Appendix A unless specified otherwise in this
specification. Requests for alternate manufacturers, models or
functional application requires concurrence of the Standards
Committee Chairman.
Commentary 13.4.1:

Note that the relay selected must be suitable for the high continuous
ambient temperature specified in Section 6.1.

13.4.2 For submersible pumps, protective functions shall be provided as


required by the submersible pump/motor manufacturer:

13.4.3 If Data Schedule 1 specifies that the motor fed from the controller is
equipped with RTDs, the protective relays shall be equipped with
either:
 built-in RTD input functionality or

13.4.4 Protective relays shall be wired per the relay manufacturers suggested
wiring diagrams.

13.5 Submersible Pump Instrumentation

13.5.1 If specified within Data Schedule 1, a submersible pump monitoring


and protection system shall be provided with the controller. This shall
consist of the following:
a) An “Integrated Surface Panel”
b) A “Star Point Choke”

c) Shall be wired per the manufacturers’ suggested wiring diagrams.


d) Submersible Pump instrumentation.

13.5.2 If specified as being required on Data Schedule 1, separate electronic


pressure and temperature transmitter(s) shall be supplied which will
receive pressure and temperature signals from sensors/transducers
located near the submersible pump. They shall have the following
characteristics:
a) Shall be 120 VAC powered from the power supply potential
transformer.
b) Shall convert the output of the pressure and temperature
sensors/transducers to isolated 4-20 mA DC signals.
c) The minimum isolation between the transmitter input and the
transmitter output shall be 125% of the controller supply voltage
shown in Data Schedule 1.
d) These signals will be connected to a remote, Saudi Aramco
supplied interface device. Refer to Data Schedule 1 for
specification information on these transmitters.

13.6 Instrument and Control Transformers

13.6.1 The high voltage side of all voltage and control transformers shall be
equipped with a fuse in each phase. These fuses shall be in addition to
main circuit fuses.

13.6.2 A fuse shall be provided in each ungrounded secondary conductor of


voltage and control transformers.

13.6.NA1 Control transformers shall comply with IEEE C57.13


Transformers connected to the main circuit shall comply with the
requirements of “Industrial Control Transformers.” Other
transformers shall comply with the requirements of either
“Industrial Control Transformers” or “Control Transformers.”

13.7 Indicating Lights

Indicating lights shall have the following characteristics:


a) Fixture design shall be able to withstand the permanent shorting out of the
lamp terminals. Under these conditions, the switching assembly shall

function normally.
b) Lamp shall be high density Low voltage glow protection LED (Light
Emitting Diode) type.

13.8 Control Switches/Pushbuttons

13.8.1 A selector switch shall be provided within the low voltage


compartment to function as a control circuit disconnect.

13.8.2 Pushbuttons and control switches shall be guarded, recessed or


constructed in such a manner as to prevent accidental actuation.

13.9 Meters

Ammeters shall be provided for the controller and motor space heater system as
described within Section 8.

13.10 Amperage Chart Recorder

If specified within Data Schedule 1, a motor phase current amperage chart


recorder shall be provided which has the following characteristics:
a) Continuously records the amperage on one motor phase.
b) Utilize a visual, analog, paper chart recorder.
c) The recording period shall be manually switch selectable for either
24 hours or 7 days.
d) The recorder must record current (amps) versus time and date. The time
and date must be non-volatile in memory and the recorder must retain
current time and date for a minimum of a 30-day consecutive loss of the
power supply to the recorder.

13.11 Control and Auxiliary Relays

All control and auxiliary relays shall have the following additional
characteristics:

13.11.1 Either convertible contact construction (i.e., contacts can be changed


from normally open to normally closed and vice versa in the field) or
universal contact construction (i.e., a fixed contact construction in
which the pole has both normally open and normally closed contacts
but in which only one or the other mode may be used).

13.11.2 Terminals shall accept the connectors indicated within Section 9.

13.11.3 Terminals shall be accessible from the front of the relay.

13.11.NA1 All relays shall meet the requirements of NEMA ICS 5, Part 2 for
Control Relays. Relay contact ratings shall be a minimum of
A600/P600.

(IEC Supplement)

13.11.IEC1 All electrical relays shall have the following characteristics:


a) Meet the requirements of the IEC 60255 series of Standards.
b) Shall have a minimum Rated Insulation Voltage of
660 VAC/VDC.
c) Shall have a minimum Rated Operational Voltage of
600 VAC/VDC
d) Shall have a minimum Rated Operational Current of 10 A.
e) The “Limited Making Capacity” of the contacts shall be a
minimum of 7200 VA, AC and 120 VA, DC.
f) The “Limited Breaking Capacity” of the contacts shall be a
minimum of 720 VA, AC and 120 VA, DC.

14 Communications

If the “Communication Option” is specified in Data Schedule 1 all hardware shall be


provided to allow the pump and motor monitoring equipment to communicate serially
to remote, Saudi Aramco supplied, communication interface equipment of the type
specified in Data Schedule 1.

15 Accessories

An internally switchable 230 VAC service light and a SASO Standard, 15 A rated,
GFCI type single phase, three wire grounded duplex convenience receptacle shall be
provided within the low voltage enclosure. The branch circuit supplying the receptacle
shall be rated a minimum of 20 A.

16 Nameplates and Marking

16.1 All nameplates/equipment tags shall be attached with mechanical hardware.


White nameplates with black lettering shall be provided to identify the controller
with the tag number indicated within Data Schedule 1.

16.2 The Manufacturer's shop order number, date, and catalog designation should be
indicated on the controller nameplate in addition to the nameplate information
required by the Standards indicated within the Supplement.

16.3 Warning nameplates shall be provided on the exterior of the power compartment
door and the interior of the power compartment reading: “CAUTION -
DANGEROUS VOLTAGE PRESENT EVEN WITH SWITCH OPEN.”
These nameplates shall be engraved laminated plastic with white characters on a
red background and shall be written in both Arabic and English. Letter height
shall be a minimum of 30 mm.

17 Testing and Inspection

17.1 A full operational test of the controller shall be performed at the manufacturing
facility. This test shall verify the functioning of the control circuitry and
mechanical interlocks. It shall include the following:

17.1.1 Measurement of the resistance of the main circuit.

17.1.2 Mechanical operation and interlock integrity tests.

17.1.3 Tests of auxiliary electrical devices.

17.1.4 Verification of correct wiring.

17.2 The controller main circuit shall be submitted to either:

17.2.1 A Dielectric Voltage Withstand Test comparable to the requirements


within UL 347 or

17.2.2 A Power Frequency Voltage withstand dry test comparable to


IEC 60694. Test voltage shall be per Series I (Table I).

18 Shipping

Equipment shall be shipped completely assembled.

Revision Summary

The main reason for this revision is to increase reliability during harsh ambient temperatures,
