DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

INITIAL CONCEPT SKETCHES CONCEPT 3D ILLUSTRATIONS

MATERIAL

• Steel is used to give the minimum

thicknesses and the maximum strength.

• 60% of the ArcelorMittal Orbit is made

from recycled steel, including washing
machines and used cars.
ARCHITECTURE COMPONENTS

• The architectural designed spaces here are the entrance pavilion, ramp way, High
level external walkway and a newly introduced helical slide.

• The architectural components are combined with the principal structure through
“Contrasting Geometry”.

MATERIAL

The tower is composed of puddling iron. The tower expands and contracts 15 cm from the hottest to the coldest day.

THE GATEWAY ARCH

DETAILS :
Location : St. Louis, Missouri, United States.
Height : 192 meters.
Start on site : 1961
Duration: 48 months.
Total cost : $13.4 million .
Architect/Engineer : Ar. Eero Saarinen’s
• The monument was to serve as “a living memorial to Jefferson’s ‘vision of greater opportunities for men of all races and
creeds.’”
FORM

• The “catenary”, an ideal form that exists

largely in compression, was the starting
point for Saarinen’s design.

• Sweeping a triangular section of variable

size along this curve was the basis for its
form.
MATERIAL

The arch is comprised of stainless steel-clad concrete triangular sections that vary in thickness from 54ft (bottom), to 17ft (top).
ARCHITECTURAL COMPONENTS

Programmatically, Saarinen wanted his arch to also act as an

observation deck.

A complex system of elevator cars that climb diagonally to the top of

the curved arch carry 12 people at a time to the top where visitors can
view the surrounding landscape.
