Background A new LCN power supply was introduced in 1996. Several enhancements
were made to this power supply. It is now auto-ranging on the input voltage
(102 to 264 VAC RMS) and is also power factor corrected (PFC). The fan
speed is now controlled by the ambient temperature and +5V output load in
the 5 and 10 slot chassis supplies. This will reduce the fan noise in most
cases. This new PS does have a switch on the front that allows switching
from "TEMP SENSE" (variable speed) to "FIXED" (high speed) fan operation.
These new supplies may be referred to as the PFC supplies. The input
voltage on the older supply was selected by the wiring connections and
jumpers in the AC connector on the power cord.
A new power cable assembly was also designed to meet the European
requirement that equipment being shipped into Europe meets a standard that
has been adapted by all the countries in Europe and some countries outside
Europe. This standard is called European Compliance "EC" and compliance
is indicated by the "CE" mark placed on the equipment. "CE" stands for
Conformite Europeenne. The changes resulted in improved safety, lower
noise emisions, and better robustness.
Because a new power connector was placed on the power cord, a power
supply with the correct mating connector is also required. This connector is
an IEC320 style. ALL new build equipment will use this new IEC320 style
power cable and new power supply with the IEC320 style plug.
Because this new PFC supply with the IEC320 AC connector and the older
versions are not interchangeable, a version of the new supply with the old
style AC power connector was also available for several years. The old style
8 pin power connector is referred to as the Beau connector. Note: the new
power supply with the older 8 pin connector is not EC compliant. It was
intended for replacement use only where EC is not required.
Action The new PFC power supplies that are now available only have the EC
IEC320 power connector. Table 1 lists power supplies which used the 8 pin
connector. When replacing one of these now, the new PFC supply upgrade
kits with the IEC320 style ac connector must be used. Table 2 lists the
power supply replacement kits that have been made which contain a PFC
supply with the IEC320 style ac connector and several different power cords
(different power connectors for 120 & 240 VAC at the source end). These
new power cords replace the power cord attached to the node chassis so
that a PFC power supply with the IEC320 AC connector can be used. Table
2 also lists the power supply and cord used in each type of node. The kit part
number to change a node from the older non-EC supply to the PFC supply
with the IEC320 AC connector is (51402184-TAB). Table 3 lists longer
length AC power cords for use with the PFC power supplies.
Non EC Table 1 lists the power supplies which used the 8 pin AC power connector.
Replacement There are no non-EC PS available for Dual Node and 5 slot chassis.

Notes This is the tab number that would be added to 51402184 to obtain the EC
power supply shown to the right and a set of power cables. Each row under
this tab number shows where the supply would be used with each power cable
included with this tab number. The -400 was preceded by the -200, which will
be used first until stock is exhausted.
This column shows which power supply and power cable each application
would use before being converted to the EC supply.
This column shows which EC supply and power cable would be used for each
application. This shows which cable out of the set supplied would be used for
the application shown. The 5-slot power supply 51196653-200 was preceded by
51196653-100, which will be used until stock is exhausted (XC3000=cabinet).
Cable Length Table 3 shows the lengths each AC power cable with the IEC320 connector
is available in. The tab numbers are shown across the top. All the lengths
are shown in inches "in". N/A means that cable is not available in that tab
number.

Cautions ♦ When changing the power cable to the lower node of a Dual Node (DN)
chassis, it is necessary to power down the upper node and remove its
paddle cards to gain access to the lower nodes power cable mounting
screws.
♦ To insure proper alignment of the "EC" power connector with the "EC"
power supply, the power supply must be inserted first. Then plug the
power cable into the supply, and install the two mounting screws that
hold the cable in place to the chassis. Because of the tight fit of the
connector into the power supply, it might be necessary to realign the
connector if the power supply is changed.
♦ Any power supplies that have the fan control option switch should have
the switch placed in the down (FIXED) position. If present, this switch is
located on the front of the power supply just to the left of the power
switch.
