FORMULATION GUIDELINES
FORMULATION

Dispersants
• Polyacrylic dispersants like Dispex A40 and Coatex P50 are suitable alternatives to Colloid 226/35.
• Paints containing Titanium Dioxide show better dispersion and paint stability.
Coalescents
• Compatibility with hydrophobic coalescents (e.g. glycol ethers) is limited.
• Mineral spirits and Butylglycol are most suitable.
• Approx. 10 % of coalescent on wet latex are needed to achieve film formation at 5°C.
Thickeners
• Most suitable thickeners are UCAR™ POLYPHOBE™ TR 117 or TR 116.
• Cellulosic thickeners can have a negative effect on paint stability.
• Urethane thickeners are suitable. A combination of low and high shear thickeners is needed to adjust paint
rheology to the desired application method.
Fillers
• A high amount of low particle size fillers leads to low surface roughness and improved results for abrasion
resistance.
• Optimum filler packing is needed to ensure good paint properties.

PAINT PROPERTIES
Chemical resistance
• The use of calcium carbonates is not recommended
• Incorporation of titanium dioxide has no effect.
• Best properties are obtained at PVC <=40 %. Below 40 % the paint PVC doesn't affect chemical
resistance significantly.

Hot tire pick up
Test method: A piece of tire is immersed into a 60°C water bath before clamping to tire. The entire setup is placed
in the oven at 60°C.

Hot tire pick-up is influenced by the choice of fillers. The incorporation of hard fillers improves hot tire pick-up.
Paint PVC has a significant influence on the marking observed on the coating. At all PVCs no film softening,
imprint or delamination occurs.

Abrasion resistance
• Overall the abrasion resistance of dispersion based paints is higher than that of epoxy paints
• The incorporation of fine particle size fillers increases abrasion resistance.
• The use of wax emulsions and urethane dispersions has also a positive effect.

Fire performance
The fire performance of three paint samples using different colored pigments, based on FP6430/1, was evaluated
at CSTB (Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment - http://feu.cstb.fr - procès verbal n° RA020342). The paint
was applied on a M0 insulating (non-combustible) substrate at 250 g/m2 coat weight.

All the FP6430/1 formulation are classified as M1 - slight fire reaction.

PAINT APPLICATION
APPLICATION

• The rheology profile of FP6430/1 was adjusted to give good roller application properties. Brush application
and industrial application methods are possible and would need formulation adjustments.
• FP6430/1 can be applied directly onto concrete, however the use of a concrete primer is recommended,
e.g. based on UCAR™ Latex XZ 91930.00. The latex should be diluted with water (1 part
UCAR Latex XZ 91930.00 to 3 parts water). One coat should be applied by brush or spray and allowed
to dry before applying the floor paint.
