INTRODUCTION

A school library is a place in the school where vast collections of academic books

are kept. These books are made available to the students to increase their knowledge and

understanding on various subjects. A school library plays a great role in the life of a

student.

It is the store house of knowledge. In a library, students can find books on various

subjects such as history, geography, environment, political science, literature, etc.

A school library exhibits positive impact on the academic achievement of the

student. Students can perform better during examination by reading various books.

The dearth of textbooks and other teaching materials will be suited to local needs

is one of the major problems of education in this country. Being conscious of this fact the

researchers have been able to make some very useful contribution in the form of books,

occasional papers, reports, surveys, and articles in professional Pakistani and

international journals (Haider, 1987). Books are the basic source of information and

knowledge. Some books are written for constant reading and some compiled to seek

pertinent information and references (Awais, 1987).

Knowledge is power and source of power is book. All advancement of human

civilization and wisdom are based on books. A Canadian philosopher said, "Without

books God.is silent, justice dormant, philosophy Lame and all Sciences stand in

darkness" (Sabzwari 1993).

Effective scientific information system is of vital importance to plans and progress

of developing countries for the nation building tasks to raise the standard of living;
3
Pakistan Science policy takes cognizance of the importance of scientific information for

research. The national research councils and Pakistan Science foundation have statutory

mandate to manage scientific in forma lion activity (Akhar 1993).

The idea for selection of this topic for research thesis can be categorized in three

portions, which are discussed as here under: (a) The library being a National Heritage and

Legacy desired; to I be preserved and saved from loss. It was the nearest and immediate

cause to select this topic. The researcher being concerned with the library field

understood it his duty to make students, staff and teachers aware of the problem and

importance of being responsible library users and to bring the elements which are going

to lick up our national resources like white ants, in the notice of the higher authorities, (b)

As before this no research was carried out on the topic, so the researcher thought it most

suitable for research project.
