Prevention of Electric Shocks

 When using electrical equipment ensures that 'All live parts' (those conductive parts
which normally carry electric current) are enclosed to prevent accidental contact.
 Check to see if the enclosure is of adequate strength and cannot be broken easily,
inform your senior if there is a problem.
 Check to see if the access panels to live parts are securely fixed and cannot be opened
without specific tools, such as a screwdriver, inform your senior if there is a problem.
 Prevent accessible metal parts from becoming 'live' by grounding those metal parts
through connecting them to an earth terminal. Grounding can be done by connecting to a
flexible cable earth wire (for portable equipment) , or by means of other permanent earth
conductors. Inform administrative department if you suspect a problem.
 Do not touch electrical appliances and sockets with wet hands.

Wiring/ Cords
 Check to see if there are any frayed wires, inform your senior if there are any.
 Use suitable extension cords to alleviate the excessive strain on over stretched cords.
 Check to see if the wiring has proper connection to the plugs, inform your senior if there
is a problem.
 Do not locate wiring / cords over sharp edges and in passage ways. Inform your senior if
there is a problem.
 Use heavy duty and water proof electrical cables and plugs for external work.

Plugs and Sockets

 Minimise the use of plugs that do not require the use of an adapter.
 Check to see if there is damage to the casing of the plug and inform your senior
immediately.
 Do not overload sockets, use suitable extension cords with circuit breakers instead.
Inform your senior if there is a problem.
 Do not attach a further extension cord to an existing extension cord.

Equipment
 When using equipment check to see if there are any exposed electrical parts, and
damage to the casing. If there is, stop using the equipment and inform your senior
immediately.
 Do not use equipment close to water sources
 Do not drag or pull electrical appliances by the supply cables
 Use equipment rested on insulated surfaces if possible.

 Switch off and unplug electrical equipment when not in use wherever practical.

Portable Electric Tools

 Before using a portable electric tool check to see it is properly earthed, unless it is an
approved type that does not require earthing.
 Before using an electric tool, make sure that the casing is undamaged. If it is damaged, do
not use the tool.
 Make sure that all cables, plugs or connectors are of appropriate ratings, suitable for the
tools and are sound and properly wired up.
 Ensure that switches are working smoothly and freely before connecting to the supply.
 Make sure that the power cable is long enough to reach your working place without straining
it, and of sufficient size to prevent overloading and excessive volt drop.
 Keep power cables off the floor. They may get damaged or trip somebody.
 Never stand on a damp or wet surface when using electrical equipment, and keep the
equipment clean and dry.
 Portable electric tools should only be used for their designed purpose.
 Never connect a portable electric tool to a lighting socket.
 Never use worn, blunt or damaged bits or other accessories.
 Disconnect tools when not in use.
 Wear eye protection even when drilling downwards.
 In case working inside the confined space and damp environment, the voltage of temporary
lighting and hand-tools shall not exceed 25V.

Personal Protective Equipment

 Always wear the safety boots provided. Wearing of rubber gloves when using electrical
equipment when hands are wet is mandatory.
