Resesarch Skills

The document outlines five steps for developing research skills: 1) Define your topic and identify key terms and recent literature. 2) Gather information from reliable databases using keywords and skimming abstracts. 3) Read the gathered material and identify relevance. 4) Take notes on important arguments, results, and details for citing. 5) Analyze sources by looking for agreements, disagreements, and commonly cited works. The overall goal is to build understanding on a topic through research, facts, and evidence rather than just copying existing materials.

Developing Research Skills

(Video by ELC Open Online Courses)

Before starting the research, a researcher should first 1 know the purpose of his/her research. It
should be made clear that research is about gathering and analyzing existing literature on a
desired topic and it is not only about copy-pasting the existing material. The researcher
should make sure that his understanding of topic is built on research, facts and data, and is
supported by evidence.

1. The first step to start your research is defining your topic. Identify the key terms and
cite recent empirical and theoretical literature.
2. The second step is to gather information and for this purpose the researcher should
use a reliable scholarly online database. For precise information the researcher should
use the keywords. Instead of reading whole articles, skim through the abstracts and
download the related papers. The papers with contrasting perspectives can help you to
develop your idea in a better way.
3. The third step is to start reading the gathered material. After reading the abstract the
researcher will be able to identify that whether the paper is relevant or not. Looking at
the reference list can lead you to more useful resources.
4. Fourth step is about taking notes. While reading the material note down all the
important key arguments, results, discussion points and the details for citing that
information.
5. Finally, the researcher should analyze the sources. Look upon your notes and identify
the interesting arguments and the points on which the different sources agree or
disagree. Identify the important works by looking at the commonly cited sources.
