Sentinal Species

(Beta 0.6)
A small addition to the game Four Against Darkness By Russell Reynolds
Four Against Darkness is a great game made by Andrea Sfiligoi

Foreward;
What started as an idea for a few additional entries in the store/items section ballooned into a sort of
mini expansion. There may or may not be some terms mentioned and referred to that aren't found in the
original Four Against Darkness book, they're from other modules/mini expansions I'm drafting up. Just
ignore those for now and keep an eye out for said expansions and or modules. Well, enjoy!
So you want a furry friend to accompany you on your adventures? Here's some ground rules I've been
bouncing around my head. Feel free to use any or all of this framework I've written down here.

RULES;

TYPES;
Small Animal Companions:
• Canary
• Cat
• Hamster
• Ferret
• Owl
• Rat
• Raven

Medium Animal Companions:

• Dog
• Large Cat
• Wolf

Large Animal Companions:

• Bear
• Boar

Beast of Burden:
• Donkey/Mule

COST;
Animal Companions are living creatures, and as such, they're going to want to eat. So, I feel they need
an initial cost as well as a between adventure upkeep cost.

Small Animal Companion; 5gp + 1gp/adventure upkeep.

Medium Animal Companion; 20gp + 5gp/adventure upkeep.
Large Animal Companion; 100gp + 25gp/adventure upkeep.
Beast of Burden; 500gp + 25gp/ adventure upkeep.

TAKING YOUR COMPANIONS INTO THE DUNGEON WITH YOU;

Marching Order and Roster Slot effects;

Small Animal Companions:
take no roster slots, these guys perch on shoulders, sit in pockets, fly around, etc... as a result
they have no impact on marching order.

Medium Animal Companions:

take a minimum of 1 roster slot, however since they're generally smaller than other characters
you can fit 2 in a slot when considering marching order.

Large Animal Companions:

take 2 roster slots. These guys are big, they like their space. They will generally always count as
one of the front line fighters.

Beast Of Burden:
Usually sits outside the dungeon entrance, it allows the party to carry 1000 gold in it's pack. You
may assign Medium Animal Companions to protect the Beast of Burden.

EFFECTS ON COMBAT;

When an Animal Companion Dies in combat, the owner receives the Seek Vengence status effect. See
Keyword section.

Small Companions: (For Now) These guys are small and almost insignificant in their affect on combat.

KEYWORDS:
Charge!: If you encounter monsters in a corridor, the beast lets out war cry and charges ahead. The
beast makes one attack treating the monsters at -1 level, it then fights on it's own for one turn.
Example: The party encounters an Orc Brute in a corridor, no roll for reaction is made,
the boar is making it for you, it Charges. The level 5 Orc is treated as level 4 for one
round of combat between just the Orc and the Boar. After that round, Combat is joined
as normal.
Dangersense: Sentinel species are often used to detect risks to humans by providing advance warning
of a danger. Be it environmental hazards or those from other sources, such as an incoming monster.
Creatures with Dangersense removes the ability to be ambushed/surprised.
Gas Alert: The Companion Animal Alerts you to a gas trap, giving +1 to pass/avoid, Companion
creature dies as a result.
Guardian: If a monster rolls a 6 to his it's owner, roll a D6 1-3 Character takes the hit as normal, 4-6
the Animal jumps in the way, making one attack and taking the hit for your character.
Example: An Ogre swings at the Rogue and rolls a 6 to hit, your dog immediately rolls
a D6 before the damage is dealt to the Rogue. It rolls a 4 so the Dog then rolls it's
attack against the Ogre as it takes the damage for the rogue. Loyal to the end.
Seek Vengence!: Your closest (Animal) companion has just been struck down! Kill em all until you
feel better! When your animal Companion dies, your Character's next attack is the same as a
Barbarian's beserk attack. (See Barbarian Entry in Main Rulebook.)
Or
For the remainder of the game/adventure, +1 to Attack Rolls and -1 to Defense Rolls
Shiney Findy: When searching rooms, Corridors, and looting minion corpses for Gold, Roll an
additional D3-1gp.
Vermin Hunter: Reduce the appearance of Lv1 Vermin rolls by 1d6 (If it says 3d6 you roll 2d6
instead, this only applies to Lv 1 Vermin)

I will add to this as interest is expressed or as I feel, whichever affects my willingness to expand on this
happens first.
