WOODWORKING – making item from wood.

METALWORKING – working with metals

Bamboo arts and crafts – low cost material which is strong and durable

MATERIALS USED IN WOODWORKING

1. Engineered wood – composite wood, man-made wood, or manufactured wood

- for joists and beams

2. Wood Finishing Materials – refine or protect

3. Adhesives- firmly attach and connect two or more pieces of wood

4. Fiber-reinforced composite (FRC)- three main componenets, fiber, matrix and interface

5. Spalted Wood – coloring effect caused by fungi

6. Wood putty – plastic wood, to fill holes that are found in wood

7. Veneer- thin slices of wood, thinner than 3mm

MATERIALS USED IN METALWORKING

1. Stainless Steel – the quality is very promising, ability to resist corrosion, high temperature

2. Aluminum – metal working projects for flexibility, chemical and water resistance.

3. Straight oil – cutting oil, used in refining

4. Soluble oil- emulsifiable oil

Emulsifiable oil- light, chemical artificial oil act as lubricant

5. Synthetic fluis- significantly opposite to soluble oil. Does not contain any petroleum

MATERIALS USED IN BAMBOO ARTS AND CRAFTS

1. Bamboo – light, exceptionally durable and very hard wood for scaffolding

SCAFFOLDING – temporary structure that can support the object

2. Varnish – protective coating, it is hardwearing, transparent or colored

3. Wood Glue – adhesive used to tightly bond pieces of wood together

4. Nylon string – long, thin piece of twisted threadused to attach, tie together or hang things

5. Nails- pin shaped metal objects used as fastener, pin to hang something. Has sharp pointed end

6. Paint – liquid or gum composition changes to solid film.

SUBSTRATE – material which an organism lives and grows

Different types of paint: SYNTHETIC PAINT – latex or water based paint, WATERCOLOR

Word Processing – creation, editing, storage and printing of a document

Word processor – computer application for manipulation of text

Example: Word and notepad

Alignment Guides- when an object is lined up

Read mode- transform into book form

PDF (Portable Document Format)- captured and saved, without causing any change on any part of the
document

PARTS OF MICROSOFT WORD

1. Title Bar- located at the top of the program window

2. Quick Access Toolbar – displays the save, undo, redo buttons: can be customized

3. Ribbon – all the commands you can use to work on a word document

4. Rulers – horizontal and vertical bars marked with units of measurement

5. Task panes – to make formatting and editing

6. Navigation pane – to go to a particular spot in a document, listed heading, page thumbnail

7. Scroll bars- to view the parts beyond what the window displays: right side and bottom edge

8. Zoom slider – zooming level

9. Page number- current page number and total number of pages

10. Word count- number of words in the document.
