Corruption in the prison system

Thesis Statement: The American prison system is very corrupt and I think that we can fix it by

reconstructing some of the laws. Though the prison system is corrupt most of the times guilty

people are convicted. Corruption in the United States is the act of government officials abusing

their political powers for private gain, bribery and other methods are often used in the

prison/justice system., this corrupt prison system incarcerated innocent people, and in this

corrupt prison system people are given more time for things like race and gender.

Though the prison system in America is corrupt it can get better by reconstructing certain laws.

In America there are certain laws that were made with the purpose to hold back specific groups of

people.

For example for a foreigner to legally come to America it can take up to 1½ to 3 years and cost

up to $725 -$1,200 dollars.

A poor person is more likely to go to prison because they cannot afford a good lawyer or defense

attorney, and more likely to stay in prison because they cannot afford bail.

While some other laws were made to help maintain and improve the lives of certain

races,nationalities, or social classes.

The fact that the prison system is corrupt and imprisons innocent people does not diminish the

fact that guilty people are convicted .

Austin 2

Most of the percentage of prisoners are guilty of their crimes or at least some crime.

the number of incarcerated Americans being approximately 2.4 million, by that estimate as many

as 120,000 people may be incarcerated as a result of wrongful convictions.

This means that approximately 2,280,000 are imprisoned for a crime they did commit.

Implementing a law that requires a certain amount of evidence and witnesses before a trail can

take place.

The jury also shouldn't be able to see the defendant to prevent bias towards physical appearance.

All Conversations with the defendant and investigation should all be recorded to prevent any

bribery or tampering of evidence.

Should people convicted of petty crime and smaller offenses be jailed in different sectors and

jails?.

Yes they should because this could help prevent a lot of the violence that happens in jails.

Corruption in the United States is the act of government officials abusing their political powers

for private gain, bribery and other methods are often used in the prison/justice system

Prison can be used as a tool to shut people up and take their power . It can be used by politicians

and other people in power.

for example Martin Luther King being sent to prison for peaceful protest against the mistreatment

of African Americans .

Another example Nelson Mandela being in prison for 27 years for trying to end the apartheid and

overthrow the dictatorship.

Another Dark part of prison is there involement in the human sex trafficking ring.
Austin 3

When you're in prison it can be one of your weakest times in life this makes inmates easy targets.

When some of these people get out of prison they have no home to no money, and nobody to help

them this makes them targets for prostitution and human sex trafficking.

Conclusion: Many innocent people are in jail for crimes they did not commit. The problem with

the American prison system is the biased laws, bribery, and the actual prison

(guards,inmates,.etc). Factors like race, gender, status, and social class can affect the outcome of

your trial and which jail you go to and how you’re treated. Many laws can be changed to make

the prison system less corrupt and fairer. In the corrupt prison system there are many types of

corruption. They all take place in different places, whether that be the courtroom, the jury, the

media, the government, or the actual prison or jails. For judges the bribe May be money or

favors,For governors, politicians, and for bureaucrats the bribe
