Mungbean Sheller

Mungbean Sheller
I. Introduction
Mungbean or 'mongo' is a leguminous crop mainly grown for its seeds. While sometimes
unnoticed, mungbean is in high demand in the local markets. That's triggered by mungbean 's
popularity as a cheap source of protein. Unfortunately the production of mungbeans is seasonal
and insufficient. As in the case of peanut and soybean, local mungbean production continues to
increase with imports to meet domestic and industrial demands.
Mungbean is popular with farmers since, apart from occasionally irrigating and applying
fertilizer, it doesn't need too much attention during its growing stage. Mungbean is typically
grown in dry months of the year due to its relatively low demand for moisture in the soil. The
mechanization of mungbean output is, however, one of the industry's key challenges. The seeds
are typically hand transmitted or drilled. Due to its maturity characteristics the harvesting of the
dried pods is considered tedious. The pods do not mature simultaneously, so priming is done
widely during harvesting. This operation is done manually and it is a great challenge in terms of
developing appropriate harvesting machinery.
