Mungbean sheller

I. Introduction
Mungbean or 'mongo' is a leguminous crop mainly grown for its seeds. While sometimes
unnoticed, mungbean is in high demand in the local markets. That's triggered by mungbean 's
popularity as a cheap source of protein. Unfortunately the production of mungbeans is seasonal
and insufficient. As in the case of peanut and soybean, local mungbean production continues to
increase with imports to meet domestic and industrial demands.
Mungbean is popular with farmers since, apart from occasionally irrigating and applying
fertilizer, it doesn't need too much attention during its growing stage. Mungbean is typically
grown in dry months of the year due to its relatively low demand for moisture in the soil. The
mechanization of mungbean output is, however, one of the industry's key challenges. The seeds
are typically hand transmitted or drilled. Due to its maturity characteristics the harvesting of the
dried pods is considered tedious. The pods do not mature simultaneously, so priming is done
widely during harvesting. This operation is done manually and it is a great challenge in terms of
developing appropriate harvesting machinery.

II. Principle of operation

In the cylinder-concave assembly, the mungbean pods are manually charged into the
hopper for shelling. The mixture of mungbean kernels, shells, and other impurities is then
discharged from the shelling device through the concave slots and falls into the oscillating screen
where kernels and small broken shells are separated from the big shells. With the help of the
blower, tiny broken shells and light impurities are removed from the kernels. The kernels are
then discharged into the main outlet of the kernel, and the shells are sent to the main outlet.
The sheller only needs one operator whose primary role is to load the pods into the
hopper. Kernel collection can be achieved by putting a suitable container beneath the kernel
outlet during the shelling process. A sack can be added to the outlet of the shell to avoid
scattering of the shells.
III. Application
This brief study aimed to:
1. Design and fabricate a small capacity mungbean sheller.
2. Perform preliminary performance tests of the mungbean sheller.
