CAPTION

Definition :
Noun : A short text or a sentence under a picture in a book, magazine, social media post, or
newspaper that describes the picture/post, explain what the people are doing or saying, to tell a
story, or maybe to encourage a conversation.
Verb : To provide a short piece of text under a picture in a book, magazine, social media post or
newspaper that describes the picture/post or explains what the people in it are doing or saying.

Purpose/Social Function :
1. To Explain what is shown in the picture
2. To draw attention to something in the image that is not obvious
3. To help the the reader to understand the information that may or may not be in the text
4. To Identify the subject of the picture
Generic Structure :
1. Title
2. Lead
3. Section Heading
Language Features :
1. Prepositional Phrase : A group of words consisting of a preposition, its object and any
words that modify the object.
Example :
 He arrived in time
 During the national anthem is the worst time to blow your nose
 The cat in the middle is the cutest
 The boy with him is his son.
( Bold words are the prepositional phrase )

2. Infinitive Phrase : The infinitive form of a verb plus any complements ( direct object )
and modifiers ( adverb ).
Example :
 To invent an airplane is nothing. To build one is something, but to fly is
everything
 He helped to build the roof.
 The only solution was to lower the standards.
 Let him show you the best way to paint the door
 The officer returned to help the inspectors
 Dawn helped her friend bake his mother a cake.
 He wants to do his homework quickly.
( Bold words are the infinitive phrase )

3. Participal Phrase : A phrase that look like a verb, but functions as an adjective to describe
nouns.
Example :
 Fond of brushing her hair, Kelly always had smooth and silky locks.
 The trash can sat in the corner, brimming with garbage.
 The woman, smiling and waving, said hello.
 The phone was almost out of battery power, blinking in the dark
 Pouring a glass of milk, Rachel concentrated.
( Bold words are the participal phrase )

4. Adjective phrase : A group of words that describe a noun or pronoun in a sentences.


 A person dumber that me needs to figure that out
 The beautifully carved frames are priceless.
 There is always someone better than you and more talented than you.
 She had extremely blue eyes

5. Question : A type of sentences that require an answer


Example :
 Who will protect me
 When did he leave ?

6. Exclamation Mark : An exclamation mark is a type of punctuation mark that goes at the
end of a sentence.
Example :
 Oh! That is a gorgeous, new dress.
 Stop! I really don't want to get wet. Don't throw me in the pool!

Social media ( Instagram ), Magazine, Newspaper, Books.
Example :
