Enid Blyton was born in Dulwich, in South-East London, in 1897. When she left school, she
trained as and became a teacher. She continued to teach for five years until she married and had
children. Enid Blyton had two daughters, Gillian and Imogen, with her first husband, whose
name was Hugh Pollock.
From a very early age Enid Blyton enjoyed making up stories. She said that she liked making
up stories better than she liked doing anything else. She published her first book in 1922. It was
called Child Whispers and it was a collection of poetry. She went on to write more than 800
stories and poems.
A number of illustrators worked on Enid’s stories, perhaps most famously Eileen Soper, who
illustrated The Famous Five. But Enid always carefully checked and approved the pictures in her
books
Enid Blyton died in 1968 but remains a publishing phenomenon – the greatest children’s writer
of the 20th century. She has become one of the best-known and best-loved writers of children’s
stories and many of us fondly remember reading her books as children. She is consistently voted
a children’s favourite in author polls and even the RAF’s Red Arrows perform the Enid display
sequence as homage to her and The Famous Five!
ADVENTURE
The Famous Five are among Enid Blyton’s best-loved creations and countless children have gone
adventuring with them since the publication of Five on a Treasure Island in 1942, the first of
twenty-one full-length adventures and numerous short stories.
Armed with maps, torches, packets of sandwiches and a plentiful supply of ginger-beer, Julian,
Dick, Anne, their tomboy cousin George (Georgina by rights) and Timmy the dog like nothing
better than to spend their holidays hiking and biking, camping and exploring by themselves,
invariably falling into adventure.
Both classic and revised (sensitively updated to bring them into the 21st century) texts available.
These anniversary editions benefit The House of Illustration, the world’s first dedicated home for
the art of illustration.
And we’re still celebrating with these new reissues of books six to ten.

MYSTERY SERIES
The Five Find-Outers and Dog are Fatty, Larry, Daisy, Pip, Bets and Fatty’s Scottie dog, Buster.
Fatty’s real name is Frederick Algernon Trotteville and, unfortunately for him, his initials fit him
to a tee. The children investigate crimes in and around the riverside village of Peterswood, much
to the annoyance of the village policeman, blustering buffoon Mr. Goon.
The first title in the series, The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage, was published in 1943. There are
15 original books in the Five Find-Outers and Dog Mystery Series by Enid Blyton, written
between 1943 and 1961.

SECRET SERIES
The Secret Island, published in 1938, is not only the first book in the Secret series but has the
distinction of being Enid Blyton’s first full-length adventure novel.
The Secret Island is unusual in that the children do not come up against a gang of criminals.
Rather, the story is a surprisingly poignant tale of survival and community, with echoes of
Robinson Crusoe.
There are 5 original “Secret” books by Enid Blyton written between 1938 and 1953.
There is also one sequel to the “Secret” series written by Trevor J. Bolton in 2009.
FAMILY ADVENTURES
In Enid Blyton’s own words “Are you a child? Or are you a grown-up? It doesn’t much matter,
with these books. They are written for the whole family, and for anyone who has to do with
children. They are written, as all stories are written, to entertain the reader — but they are written
too to explain some of the wrong things there are in the world, and to help to put them right.”
Each of the Family Adventures focuses on a different family, with different social circumstances
and issues.
The Family at Red-Roofs was first published in 1945 and the other stories were published
through the 1950s.

ADVENTURE
The Adventurous Four are twins Jill and Mary, their elder brother Tom and their friend,
fisher-boy Andy. In two full-length books and a short story, the children sail to Scottish islands
and become embroiled in hair-raising adventures.
The first book, The Adventurous Four, was published in 1941 and is set firmly in wartime. In
1998 the two books were retitled The Adventurous Four Shipwrecked! and The Adventurous
Four Stranded!
The short story from Enid Blyton’s Omnibus! was expanded by Clive Dickinson to
form a third novel.
The Island
The Castle
The holidays are never dull for Roger and Diana Lynton when their cousin Peter (who goes by
the name of Snubby) comes to stay. Adventures begin for the three children when they make
friends with Barney the circus-boy who, since his mother’s death, has been on a quest to find his
absent father.
There are six Barney “R” Mysteries books written between 1949 and 1959.
Jo, Bessie and Fanny come to live at the edge of the Enchanted Wood where the trees, “a darker
green than usual,” whisper their secrets: “Wisha-wisha-wisha.” In the wood is the Faraway Tree
— a huge tree inhabited by fairy-folk and laden with fruit of all kinds from acorns to lemons. Its
topmost branches lead to ever-changing magical lands above the swirling clouds.
The first title of the main trilogy, The Enchanted Wood, was first published in 1939.
Picking up where the hugely successful Faraway Tree series left off, the inhabitants of the
Enchanted Wood face the biggest threat to their existence yet — the death of the Faraway tree!
Magical, mystical and completely loveable, the Enchanted World series follows the adventures of
five fairies brought together to save the Faraway tree. Elise Allen wrote seven extension stories in
2008 and 2009.

WISHING CHAIR
When Peter and Mollie wander into an antique shop to buy a present for their mother’s birthday,
little do they know how enthralling life is about to become. Quite by accident, they acquire a
wishing-chair which sprouts wings and flies them wherever they want to go.
There are two original Wishing-Chair books by Enid Blyton written in 1937 and 1950, plus a
third book compiled later which was made up of removed chapters together with material from
Sunny Stories and Enid Blyton’s Omnibus! An “Enchanted Lands” BBC TV cartoon series was
made in the 1990s, based on the Wishing-Chair and Faraway Tree series.
In 2009, Egmont published a set of six “New Adventures of the Wishing-Chair” books written by
Narinder Dhami, featuring children called Jack and Jessica.

sorts of exciting adventures. One thing’s for sure - not many of the other toys get the better of

popular today.

MALORY TOWERS
Malory Towers is a girls’ boarding school located in picturesque surroundings by the sea in
Cornwall. Heroine Darrell Rivers (named after Kenneth Darrell Waters, Enid Blyton’s second
husband) arrives at Malory Towers at the age of twelve, excited and eager. However, things do not
go as smoothly as she had envisaged.
There are six original Malory Towers books the first published in 1946.
In 2008, Pamela Cox was commissioned to write a further six books in the Malory Towers series.

NAUGHTIEST GIRL
Spoilt, defiant Elizabeth Allen is furious when her parents decide to send her away to boarding-
school. She makes up her mind to be thoroughly rude and disobedient, determined to be expelled
by half-term.
There are three original Naughtiest Girl books written between 1940 and 1945; the fourth book
was originally serialised in Sunny Stories.
In 1999 and 2000, author Anne Digby wrote a number of Naughtiest Girl sequels:
NAUGHTIEST GIRL
Brand new reissues with Enid Blyton’s original text, illustrated by rising star Kate Hindley.
ST CLARE’S
St. Clare’s, a girls’ boarding school which predates Malory Towers. Tricks and jokes, midnight
feasts, sports matches, thrilling rescues, fun and friendship are all a part of life at the school —
but so are hard work, exams, problems, hot tempers, malice and snobbery. Certainly there’s never
a dull moment at St. Clare’s!
The first St. Clare’s book was published in 1941 and the series of six books remains popular today.
The series is unusual in that the first three titles all revolve around life in the first form while the
other three focus on the second, fourth and fifth forms respectively. In 2000, Pamela Cox wrote
two more St. Clare’s books to “fill in” the gaps in the series. In 2008 she wrote another, Kitty at St.
Clare’s. A further 28 extensions published in Germany are available.
