    The Cross-River Gorilla is a critically endangered subspecies of western gorilla found in montane and bamboo forests between Cameroon and Nigeria. It has distinct skull and tooth dimensions compared to other gorilla subspecies. Major threats include population decline as only around 300 remain, poaching and illegal wildlife trade, and loss of habitat due to deforestation which fragments their forests. If this species goes extinct it could significantly impact the ecosystem by causing an environmental imbalance.

    Evidence: The Cross-River Gorilla

    Part A

    Read the following information about the Cross-River Gorilla.

    The Cross-River Gorilla is a subspecies of the western gorilla that is usually


    found in montane rainforest between 1,500 and 3,500 meters and in bamboo
    forest from about 2,500 to 3,000 meters. It differs from the other subspecies of
    gorilla in skull and tooth dimensions. They live on a small area of high-land
    forest on the border of Cameroon and Nigeria. They have been classified as a
    critically endangered species. (World Wildlife Fund for Nature, s.f.)

    Now, for completing the evidence you need to carry out a little research on the
    web to find out the major threats for the Cross-River Gorilla. With the
    information obtained, write a short paragraph describing why this species is
    facing extinction and the consequences of its hypothetical extinction. Make sure
    you use conditionals in your text.

    The major threats for the Cross-River Gorilla are… The main threats to
    the Cross River gorilla are the danger of population decline, when we
    only have about 300 specimens (perhaps less) of a species, we are
    close to losing it, poaching, illegal trade in animals and their parts and
    The loss of their habitat due to humans translates into fragmentation of
    the forests, if they destroy the forest they are also destroying their habitat
    since 76% of the country where gorillas are housed is allowed to cut
    down trees, if you can notice there are many threats to this species
    including diseases transmitted by other species and even humans, when
    they live so close to each other it is very difficult to prevent them from
    decreasing their population. If this species becomes extinct it would
    cause an imbalance in the environment and this would result in
    significant changes in the ecosystem
