Tips for packing a backpack

There's no one way to pack a backpack -- everyone will pack their backpacks differently. But some
general guidelines will make it easier for you to access the things you need when you need them.
They'll also make your pack easier to carry over a long day.

1. Lay out everything you need and go

through a checklist before you pack
anything.

2. Pack your sleeping bag and clothes

down the bottom. This will keep them
out of the way during the day, and
you're unlikely to need them until you
stop for the night.

3. The heavier items should be packed

closest to your back. This helps with
your centre of gravity and will assist
you when hiking.

4. Have everything you will need to access quickly on the top of your pack i.e. first aid kit,
rain jacket, snacks and drinking water.

5. Make sure your clothes and sleeping gear are waterproofed. Wet sleeping bags are not
very much fun!

6. It is best to have everything packed inside the pack so that mats etc. do not get torn by
branches and rocks as you hike.

7. Try to reduce as much weight as possible, some tips for doing this are;
a. Remove any unnecessary packaging that food comes in.
b. Only pack the bare essentials (Clothes etc.) and what you will use (food, water)
c. Split up the weight of large communal items (e.g., tent, trangia) with others in
your group.

8. Cluster related small items (e.g., utensils and kitchen items) in color-coded stuff sacks to
help you find them easily.

9. If carrying liquid fuel, make sure your fuel bottle cap is on tightly. Pack this below your
food in case of a spill.

On the diagram below, draw/label where you would place the following items:
 Tent
 Sleeping bag
 Trangia stove
 Water bottle/s
 Clothes
 Food
 First Aid Kit
 Sleeping mat
MINIMAL IMPACT CODE
List and explain what minimal impact practices you will follow while on the
expedition:

Hiking

I will stick to the track to make certain that I do not disturb any wildlife and ruin any

nature by trotting on it. I will also stick with people.

Cooking, disposing of wastes and washing up

I will clean the trangea and I will clean up all the rubbish and keep it until I find a bin

to put it in to make certain that no animal will eat it.

Sandboarding
I will do it safely and not disturb any wildlife.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
Prior to the expedition look at the forecast for the weather you will be experiencing
and write it in here (temperatures, chance of rain, winds). Make sure you include
your source of the weather information. Then, explain how the weather can impact
on the equipment you pack?
