1. What is dry mouth?


Dry mouth or xerostomia is condition of not having enough saliva so
your mouth and throat will feel dry, and it can lead to mouth sores and
inflammation. Xerostomia is not a disease but it may be a symptom of
madical condition, a side effect of a radiation or a side effect of a wide
variety of medications.

2. What are components of saliva?


Saliva contains two major types of protein secretions, a serous secretion
containing the digestive enzym ptyalin and a mucous secretion
containing the lubricating aid mucin. Saliva also contains large amounts
of potassium and bicarbonate ions, and to a lesser extent sodium and
chloride ions.

3. Why is saliva so important to our mouth?


Because saliva has a lot of functions, such as antimicrobial activity,
control of pH, removal of food debris from oral cavity, mechanical
cleansing action, reminarelization and maintaining the integrity of the
oral mucosa.

4. What are causes of xerostomia?


There are several causes of xerostomia, include medical treatments such
as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, health condition such as diabetes,
HIV/AIDS, depression, bipolar disorder, blocked salivary ducts, stress
and anxiety, smoking, aging process, etc.
5. How to diagnosis xerostomia?
By visit your dentist so they can diagnose and identify whay si causing it,
your dentist probably ask you about your health history, the medications
you take, and whetheryou are receiving any treatments associated with
dry mouth. Dentist also look inside your mouth and axame your teeth,
gums, and tougue. Usually they use dental mirror and basically just put
dental mirror on saliva and lift it up if the saliva sticky that’s mean the
patient has xerostomia.

6. Whats treatment that patient can do in home?


Sipping water regularly or sucking on ice chips throughout yhe day can
help keep your mouth ffrom getting too dry. You may also want to use a
humadifier at night if the air in your home tends to dry, or if you notice
your dry mouth is worse in the morning. Also use lip balm to smoothe
dry and cracked lips.

7. Whats food and drink that patient with xerostomia should avoid?
Patients with xerostomia should avoid foods that salty, and dry
alsoacidoc juicer because they can irritate your lips, mouth, and throat.

8. How to increase salivary flow?


By chewing gum that are sugar-free can coax saliva production.
Consistent oral hygiene is another strategy to preventing and managing
dry mouth, regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing your mouth cleat out
foos particles and helps inhibit bacterial growth and reduce the risk of
gum disease. Also quit smoking , alcohol and caffeine becose they may
worsen your symptoms.

9. How to manage xerostomia?


Before you can menage it you’ll need to identify the cause. Your dentist
can figure out why you have developed dry mouth and emommende
treatment. Tere are at-home strategies you can use to manage the
symptoms of dry muth, bit if there is medical cause, you may beed other
treatment.

10. Why radiaton therapy can cause xerostomia?


Because radiation causes changes in the serous secretory cells, resulting
in a reduction in salivary output and increased viscosity of the saliva. A
common early complaint following radiation therapy is thick or sticky
saliva. The degree of permanent xerostomia depends on the volume of
salivary gland exposed to radiation and the radiation dose.
