'I, Robot' takes place in Chicago in 2035, where humans and robots are in the same city,
living and communicating as normal with the latter as assistants and staff, and are programmed
to live and protect their human owners. Everyone in the world depends on a large system of
robotics, specially programmed to help humans and not harm them in any way. These robots are
created to follow the 3 laws of robotics: (1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through
inaction, allow a human being to come to harm; (2) A robot must obey orders given it by human
beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law; (3) A robot must protect its
own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second law.
"Robotophobic" homicide detective Del Spooner of the Chicago PD is heading the investigation
into the suspected death of the leading robotic scientist, Dr. Alfred Lanning. He doesn't believe
that robots are helpful, he has a strong distrust of robots, and he doesn't believe that the reason
behind Dr. Lanning's death is suicide and Spooner suspects the incident as murder. The story
started when Spooner was in a car accident and a robot decided to save him and not a young girl
because he had a higher chance to survive and because of the decision made by this robot the
young girl drowned, unable to get out of the car. That was the reason for Spooner's dislike of the
robots with their cold, calculating logic. He decided that they were no good and can only do
badly for the human race and became rather phobic and paranoid of robots. While investigating
the suspicious suicide of the creator of the robot, who is Dr. Lanning, things start to go wrong
for Spooner and he comes to believe that a robot killed the creator but he can't get anybody to
believe him. In the end, although nobody seems to trust his instincts, Spooner finds out that
behind everything that happens is not fault of the director of the company Robertson, but is
caused by USR's new robots manipulated by supercomputer VIKI (Virtual Interactive Kinetic
Intelligence), which controls all the robots of the new series. Spooner and Dr. Calvin try to reach
the headquarters of USR, and When they enter USR, they find Robertson's corpse and with the
help of Sonny they discover that V.I.K.I. wants to make the world a benevolent dictatorship to
protect people from themselves. VIKI modified her understanding of the Three Laws of
Robotics and is now obsessed with creating people's completely safe living environment,
depriving them of their freedom for their own good. She realizes that in order to protect
humanity as a whole, some humans have to be sacrificed and some freedoms must be
surrendered since, despite the efforts of robots, humans employ means of self-destruction. But
then, Sonny didn’t follow what VIKI said instead he helped Dr. Calvin and Spooner to solve the
misdeed. Sonny proves his loyalty to mankind by helping Spooner and Calvin defeat the mad
robots and inject the nanites (supposed to be used by Calvin to Sonny) into the computer core,
destroying it, and returning all the NS-5's into their basic programming.
As I’ve watched this movie, it shows the emerging of technology as the years had been
passed. The advancement of technology has both benefits and drawbacks. Robots are
programmed to reduce unnecessary errors and can bring smooth flow in our life. They can be
part of our lives and protect us from any harm. However, there will be a possibility that robots
may take over the world and be superior to us, humans. If it's humans who monitor this
development, it's nice that they can hold it in their possession, but if a computer (like robots in
the film) with artificial intelligence will evolve on its own – it's a serious human problem.
Technologies will continue to evolve, because nobody knows for sure where humanity will
come from, and the film is a kind of prediction and warning to people. VIKI, which was meant
to serve mankind, challenged humanity itself as the greatest enemy of human society, and thus
took possession of humanity. Also, it can create conflicts as the robots are rules only by cold
logic, while people are ruled by emotions. Moreover, rebellion among robots is a very dangerous
thing, since they are much stronger physically, and human capacity to feel has nothing to do
with robot power and strength.
