Manila

A city that is known of being pearl of the orient, and the capital of the Philippines, where historical
and rapid modernization intertwines. A highly-urbanized city and the most-densely populated city,
which make it to the 13th most populous country in the world as of 2020, the city has 109,581,078
population with a 298,170 land area. The City of Manila is considered alongside with the other capital of
other countries such as Mexico City of Mexico and Madrid of Spain as the world’s earliest/original set of
Power City or Global City an idea where the globalization originated or created of finance and trade. The
city considered next Tokyo, Japan as the most natural disaster afflicted city, from it’s location near the
bodies of water facing the West Philippine Sea.
Local Climate

The City of Manila as well as the Philippines has a tropical Savanna Climate that means having a two
types of season which dry and wet season, were the region is expected to experience a numerous
rainfall during the wet, and little precipitation on dry. It is under the Köppen climate classification
system, whereas most commonly used classification throughout the world.

Prevailing Winds
In the City of Manila the indicated below is the statistics of wind, wave and weather for Manila,
Philippines. The used units in the measurement is degree Celsius, that were commonly used by sailors,
surfers, kiters, etc. It is the measured blow of the winds in the specific area which is the Manila and the
temperature of it, how fast it blows, and what direction of it is going.

Solar Aspect
Sun path also known as day-arc, it is the approximate position of sun which is significant factor in the
heat-gain or also known as solar gain of the structures, whereas it tackles about the
increasing/acceleration of thermal energy of a certain structure, space, object, etc. as it take up solar
energy which is heat and light directly coming from the sun. It is also the position of the building with
respect on the transit of the sun, which is essential on the structure on what part of the house will
receive the light during the day.

Vegetation
The vegetation in architecture is important that play an important role on the structure, it is
defined as growing plants that brings a positive image on the place and causes moodboosting and an
eco-friendly structure. Below is the areas that can be found in Manila, Philippines that has green spaces,
parks, plazas, monuments, etc. It has positive effect on the user of the structure knowing the nearest
and what green spaces surrounds them, and also utilizes it by adopting it and what kind of plant can be
used in the surrounding of the structure.

Conditions affecting the Current Residence

Upon the circumstances above, it greatly contributed on the state or the condition of the
current residence that I am living. As we all now, that Manila is a low lying-area and near the
body of water, it affected the on a regular basis the flooding that is happening in our area, with
just a little amount of rain, the streets were already flooded.

The Responding Design to the Local Condition

The present state of the house where I live does not comply on the local climate that we
have in the Philippines, by means of lack of windows that doesn’t allow on the observance of
proper ventilation, on letting the air flow inside the structure. Without the proper circulation of
air inside the house, the heat inside it was increased and does require air condition or electric fan
to maintain a fair temperature inside the room.

Actual Design of the House

The photo above shown that the room in our house lacks window, that hinders the window to
pass through the room, that makes the room hot if the aircon is not turned off. With the absence
of opening on the room the proper circulations of air inside the room were suspended and makes
it uncomfortable and costly, because of the air-condition were always on for the good circulation
of air inside.
We can say that it is not a sustainable for a tropical climate, from the absence of window,
whereas the passage of air inside the room were all blocked. Also, not an efficient to save
money, for the air conditioner is a must to turn on to use the room comfortably.
Compliance on the Environmental Law
The house that I’m currently living complies on the established rules and regulations of the
environmental laws like Republic Act 9275 Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004, that contains on
protection of the bodies of water in our country from the pollution that came from the land like
the residence from their household activities. With the proper disposal of the used water from the
household activities and not directed disposed on the bodies of water like river.
Comfortability
On the design of the house on its response on the local climate condition that we have here
in the Philippines, it doesn’t make me comfortable enough on how it interacts with the condition
of the weather that we are experiencing. With the lack of salient features on preserving the
temperature and the ambiance of the house, it makes the house not comfortable enough to stay.
Other elements affecting the conditions in our house were the surroundings whereas the houses
wear very near to each other or too crowded, that the wind cannot pass through properly on the
windows.
With the enough number and proper dimensions of openings in a certain house for the proper
circulation of air inside the structure satisfies the sustainable tropical principles, with the proper
dissemination of air on the structure, it will be able to reduce the heat inside the house.
