DRESSING PROPERLY
With strenuous physical activity when your body becomes strained and hot it is
very important to keep dry and comfortably warm. If your body does not manage
this, it can be uncomfortable and later become cold. In order to enjoy physical
activity at a maximum without having to worry about the right clothing, it is
important to be aware of, understand and dress according to the 3-layer principle.

MOISTURE MANAGEMENT – LAYER 1

The garment next to the body. This layer removes moisture from the
skin to maintain a comfortable and dry micro environment next to
the body. The moisture is removed through the fabric in layer 1,
outside which, it quickly evaporates. The fabric warms the body
when it is cold and passes moisture on to the next layer. Cooldry®,
Coolmax® polypropylene, thin wool and specially treated polyesters
are classified as fabrics suitable for layer 1. Never wear cotton next to
the body as cotton absorbs moisture and therefore has an uncomforta-
ble effect and will make you cold when active.

INSULATION – LAYER 2
The middle layer’s main function is to insulate and thereby
warm the body. The second layer’s other function is to pass
moisture further from the body. The layer 2 can consist can
consist of a few insulating garments e.g. garments in fleece.
If too hot, a thinner garment can be worn. All of them must
be able to pass on moisture to function well during strenu-
ous physical activity. A flannel shirt acts well as an insulating
layer during light physical activity.

PROTECTION – LAYER 3
The outer layer protects you against rain and wind. This layer can,
through padding, also be heat insulating. Layer 3 must be breatha-
ble for maximum comfort, as this layer must let moisture from
the inner layers pass out through the outer shell. High humidity
(water column above 4,000 mm is a minimum) is a necessity for an
acceptable protection against rain. These garments should also have
taped seams to prevent water from entering through the seams.
