Footing Design

Footings must be designed to withstand loads based on soil mechanics principles. Their size and shape is determined by the forces transmitted from the structure to the soil and the permissible soil pressure or pile capacity. Footings come in different shapes depending on the column location - interior, exterior, corner - and their direction relative to the building.

DESIGN OF FOOTINGS

Footings shall be proportioned to resist the factored loads and induced reactions,
in accordance with the appropriate design requirements of the code.
Base area of the footing or number and arrangement of piles shall be determined
from unfactored forces and moments transmitted by footing to soil or piles and
permissible soil pressure or permissible pile capacity selected through the principles of
soil mechanics.
