Functions:

The concept of wheel originated from the potter’s wheel. It spun horizontally on an axis to allow
the potter to form evenly shaped jars and bowls from wet clay. Afterwards, the man-made log was
invented. This log allows the crate to roll and move forward if it is propped against the log. The
Sumerians weren’t satisfied with this so they invented a sled. Under the crate is a base with 2 runners at
each side. The runners had curved front edge allowing them to move forward more easily. It works
really well in flat ground but not in rocky terrains. Then they decided to combine their sleds and logs
into one to solve their problem with rocky grounds. However, it is so hard to control on hillsides and
inclines and when the crate moves sideways. They decided to carve grooves to the contact point of the
sled and the roller. Although they solved the problem of inclines, it was still hard to move heavy loads.
That is why they decided to cut off part of the wood in the middle part. Sometime later, they furnished it
more and added “bearings” which transformed it into what we call now as cart. It was then easier for
them to transport goods after coming up with this design. This cart turned into a chariot where horses
were used to pull it forward.

Yes, the main purpose of the wheel is for transporting goods and materials. However, take note
that each design of the wheel from beginning to end has its own functions. The more it evolved, the
more its functions evolved as well. For example, the combined log-and-sled functions well on rocky
terrains however not on inclines. When added with grooves, it could finally serve its purpose when
travelling in inclined places.

The Sumerians were the first to make a weaving industry. This is during the time when the
Middle Easterns were still gathering wool for weaving their clothes. Reed Goodman, a doctoral
candidate in the art and archaeology of the Mediterranean at the University of Pennsylvania, said that
“The Sumerians’ innovation was to turn their temples into huge factories,” He added that it was
Sumerians who first to “cross kin lines” and build organization in textile production, which is the origin
of textile manufacturing factories we have today.
