ITEP Assignment 2

The document summarizes an origin-destination survey conducted by students in the I-8/1 area of Islamabad. The students divided the survey area into three zones - a residential zone, commercial zone, and zone containing schools and mosques. Survey forms were distributed to collect travel information. Most trips originated from homes and ended at schools. The majority of travelers were pedestrians. Problems encountered included pedestrians unwilling to fill forms due to time constraints. In conclusion, the area had very little traffic and no public transport, with most people walking to destinations.

O/D Survey
Introduction:
O/D survey is also called Origin Destination Survey. An O/D survey is a review of
travel information used to determine the future traffic patterns. The survey cards
were being handed out as a part of O/D survey. The purpose of survey cards was to
collect the data about the actual trips which were being made in the project study
area. In the survey cards, some of the questions were asked like “where did your
trip start?” and “where did your trip end?”. Origin
destination (O/D) surveys provide a detailed picture of the trip patterns and travel c
hoices of a city’s or region’s residents. These surveys collect valuable data whichre
lated to households, individuals and trips. This information allows stakeholders
to understand travel patterns and characteristics,
measure trends, provide input to travel demand model development, forecasting, an
d planning for area
wide transportation infrastructure needs and services, and, monitor progress in
implementing transportation policies.
The following picture of map is the area which was selected for the survey: -
Findings:
For the conduct of our survey, we selected one of the popular areas in Islamabad
(I-8/1 Islamabad). As per the rule of conducting the O/D Survey, we divided the
area into three different zones like the residential zone, commercial zone etc. Then
we divided every zone into other three zones. Zone 2 symbolized for commercial
area, zone 1 symbolized for residential area and zone 3 symbolized for school,
Mosque and etc. For collecting the travelling information for that area, a survey
form was distributed amongst the public to get the most accurate results.

Method of our O/D Survey:

We conducted our O/D survey by the following methods: -
1) Road-Side surveys
2) Home Surveys
3) Students Surveys
Results:

The following table represents the result of our O/D Survey: -

Zone 3
Trip generation and Ending:

The area from which the trip generates is called the Trip Generation area. Most of
trip begins from home and end at the school. The number of trips generating and
ending in the same zone are lesser in number.

Mode choice:
Mode choice determines what mode of transport is being used by the traveler. In
the survey we conducted, we found that most of our candidates were pedestrians
and used to reach their destination on foot.

Pedestrians = 83% of traffic

Personal Transit = 17% of traffic
Public Transport = 0% of traffic

Problems faced during the conduct of Survey:

1) Many pedestrians were stopped and hence it cost them to lose their precious
time. A few resisted to fill the survey form as they were in a hurry.

Conclusion:
After completing survey, we have analyzed that
 Very planned area.
 No public transport.
 Lesser amount of transport with respect to pedestrians.
 Volume of traffic in the sector is very small.
