    Innovative concept to make distribution of ORS more effective to prevent
    Dehydration, saving lives of Children in Rural Areas

    CONCEPT & PROPOSAL

    The proposal being submitted for your kind and positive consideration has significant
    importance from the point of Child Health Care Programs being implemented for the
    benefits of children especially in Rural areas in our country under various RURAL
    DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL WELFARE & HEALTH PROGRAMS and NATIONAL RURAL
    HEALTH MISSION

    Due to unhygienic living conditions and poor quality of drinking water in rural areas, the
    percentage of children and even adults suffering from Diarrhoea and Cholera is very high.
    Many of them die due to dehydration.
    By administering Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT), their lives can definitely be saved.
    Under various Health care programs, Oral Rehydration Salts formulated as per WHO
    recommended standards are distributed. However, there are several constraints and
    conditions that limit the use of ORS and ultimately severity of Dehydration problem hardly
    reduces.

    On studying the problems and difficulties associated with distribution of ORS, an innovative,
    practical and appropriate ORS Dispensing System is designed and developed solely by us.

    The proposal is to distribute SAFE ORS THROUGH THE ORS DISPENSING MACHINES to
    make ORT more effective protecting children / adults from dehydration reducing the severity
    and deaths.

    By installing ORS DISPENSING MACHINES as a part of Child Health Care


    (CRH) Programs, Safe ORSolution can be made available at point of use,
    Especially in Rural areas helping minimize mortality of children due to
    Dehydration

    BACKGRPOUND

    Dehydration
    Diarrhoea causes dehydration, which kills approximately 2.2 million children
    Every year. Diarrhoea is also a major cause of child malnutrition.

    Mortality
    Diarrhoea is one of the greatest causes of child deaths and is responsible for 19 per cent of
    the deaths of children less than five years old in developing countries.

    ORT & ITS IMPORTANCE-

    Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), a mixture of water, salts and glucose in specific proportions is
    proved to be the best way to rehydrate a child suffering from diarrhoea.

    Oral Rehydration Therapy means feeding freshly prepared OR Solution to the patient to
    prevent Dehydration caused due to Diarrhoea or Cholera

    As soon as diarrhoea begins, ORT needs to be immediately administered

    Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) is a simple, cost-effective treatment given at home using
    either a simple home made solution of sugar, salt and water or a packet of Oral Rehydration
    Salts (ORS).
    This can prevent about 90% of child deaths from diarrhoeal dehydration.

    It's the most effective, least expensive way to manage diarrhoeal dehydration
    Unfortunately, people in rural areas do not get it when they need it due to
    various practical difficulties and situations

    PRACTICAL PROBLEMS IN SERVING SAFE ORS

    1. OR Solution prepared using available water especially in rural areas is contaminated


    with pathogens.
    2. At places where access to potable water is limited, ORS is prepared in water that is not
    chlorinated or boiled
    3. At health centers, clinics, ORS is prepared and stored in open vessels, buckets,
    containers that are not properly cleaned. Also, staff or patients take such solution
    dipping cups and hands
    4. Prepared ORS easily supports growth and survival of many types of enteropathogenic
    bacterias.
    5. Preparation of fresh ORS for each and every patient is not practically feasible due to
    limited number of staff and other required facilities.
    Generally therefore, it is observed that, due to several factors and limitations
    especially in rural areas, contaminated ORS is ingested by patients.

    WHO recommends that boiled or chlorinated water be used to prepare


    ORS, and that prepared ORS be discarded after 24 hr.

    However, boiling the amount of water recommended for oral rehydration is time-
    consuming and often impractical when fuel is scarce. Use of chlorinated water is not
    the option at most of rural places since it’s not at all available there.

    overcome the existing practical problems faced in serving OR Solution and to make
    available easily and conveniently SAFE ORAL REHYDRATION SOLUTION to
    Patients to prevent them from dehydration.
