“The Beauty of Paulo Coelho’s Work”

By Chatarina Tri Rahmawati

Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian author who is famous for his uniqueness in persuading his
readers to seek the true meaning of wisdom. His books are mostly filled with philosophy and
religious values from Zen, Lao Tsu, Sa’di, the Bible, and the others. As one of the most popular
authors in the world, Paulo Coelho’s works are guaranteed to have the high quality that people
like. But, even though all of his works are extraordinary, there are three novels that successfully
grasp people attention the best.
Published in 1988, The Alchemist has successfully enchanted its
readers. This novel tells us about the journey of a young shepherd
named Santiago in Egypt. The same dream that he got every night led
him to flock his wings. Santiago decided to leave his house and went to
the deserted land to find out the true meaning of his dream. Due to the
philosophy values in this book, reading will require you to think about
the meaning of each actions. It might sound so boring, but the
achievements that this book has will say the opposite. Over 62 million readers all around the
world has read The Alchemist. It also dominated the first place of best-selling novels in lots of
bookstore in 74 different countries. In 2002, it got the first position as the best -selling book by
Jornal de Letras de Portugal.
The second novel that amazingly grasped people’s loves is
Veronika Decides to Die. This novel was published in 1998 by Harper
Collins. Here, Paulo Coelho narrates the story of a twenty-four-year-
old girl, Veronika, who lived in Slovenia. Despite of her beauty and
cleverness, she always felt like her life was so monotone. That feeling
made her decided to end her life. Fortunately, she was saved by her
neighbour and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. In the hospital, she
tried to find her truest way of life. Just like his previous successes in his
novels, Veronika Decided to Die was categorized as one of the best-selling novels. Lots of critics
praised Paulo’s intelligence in describing the life of patients in the psychiatric hospital.
The last bittersweet novel that Paulo wrote is The Winner
Stands Alone which was released in 2008. I personally think that this
novel is such a phenomenal. The Winner Stands Alone gives us a big
picture of how a modern life looks like. Paulo elaborates the culture of
living with the ambition and obsession of fame and glamorous life.
Sadly enough, the success of this novel is highly different with the
success of The Alchemist. Some of Paulo’s readers found themselves a bit disappointed because
this story is so different from the rest of his novels. But still, The Winner Stands Alone managed
to get the title of the best-selling novel in some countries. For me, I do like this book because it
opened my eyes of the truth behind the flashy dress and the glitz life of celebrities. Needless to
say, this book is still worth to read.
Those are the greatest novels that are written by Paulo Coelho. He had written so many
novels, but those three are the best in my opinion. Therefore, you should try to read one of them.
