The legend of Edelweiss
Long, long time ago in the Alps mountain range, lived the cold-hearted Ice Queen. Her castle was
located inside a large cavern on the highest peak, and covered with eternal snow. Inside the castle,
everything was covered in white. The main hall is fashioned from glass that crafted from thousands of
refined ice. One shadow would be mirrored hundreds time, making it looked as if thousands of people
stood there instead of just one. Sounds would be reflected by the high arching pillars, echoed
throughout the hollow hall. With thick mist that hangs low from the ceiling, the room looks both
magnificent and a little frightening as well.
Several brave souls who live at the valley would risk their life just to see that enchanted place. Those
who lucky, would be able to admire the charming white view. But those who not, would face the Ice
Queen herself. The Queen was breathtakingly beautiful, everyone who look at her would fell for her
right away. But as a fairy, she was forbidden to marry a human.
Her heart was made of ice. Chilled, frozen. She did not care whether the humans admire her or not. If
the Ice Queen was getting bored with the human who was fascinated by her beauty, she will call upon
her subordinate, the coral mountain fairies. They would emerge from crevices of glaciers, push her
admirer, and watch as they fell, tumbling along the steep mountain. Aside from all of that, the Ice
Queen really love to sing. Her voice is as pure as the ice, like a breeze that rustling through evergreen
leaves.
One day, a brave and mighty hunter climbed the mountain. He overheard the queen’s melodious voice
that carried by the wind, and couldn’t help but to find the source of such an enchanting sound.
“Who might be live at the top of this lonely mountain?” murmured him.
He kept climb and climb until finally, he arrived to the white palace and met the Ice Queen herself. At
the very sight of her face, he knew that the Queen already got his heart. Alas, he didn’t dare to
flourish the feeling. Such a beautiful lady like her would never be interested with a poor hunter like
him. He just sat at the feet of her throne, silently so he could stay hours just to gaze at her. His attitude
is very different from flattery and praise that she usually heard. She was charmed by his attitude.
Yes… the Ice Queen had fall in love. The young man was allowed to stay at her place.
The coral mountain fairies saw what had happened. They were furious. The all-mighty Ice Queen,
who reigns over the Alps should NOT be married to a mere human. It is forbidden. They world are
just too different. On one silent evening, the fairies silently crept out from the crevices, and with one
swift motion, they catch and throw the hunter down the glacier.
“You- your kind are not deserved to be with her majesty the Ice Queen! Just go off and marry some
random villagers like yourself, you cursed creature!!!” shouted them from above.

Each time the hunter tries to climb back, the wicked fairies stop him and throw him back to the valley.
They hurled him with stones and icicles. They rolled chunks of ice toward him. One day, the hunter
grew tired of waiting. His love for the Ice Queen fades.
“I wasted my life to pursue something that will never become mine…” complained him. Eventually,
he gave up and married an ordinary peasant girl.
Day by day passed at every heartbeat, months changed to years and yet, the Ice Queen still wait for
her lover in vain. She waited and waited for his arrivals, not knowing how much time had flew and
how useless it is. One day, after what it feels like thousands of night had passed the mountain fairies
told their queen.
“He’ll never come again! Besides, he’s already married to another woman and live happily ever after.
Stop wasting your time!!” The Queen startled upon hearing this world. With a half-opened mouth, she
look uncertainly at her minions “And it’s better for you!” continued them “You are not allowed to
married a human!”
The words flew from the fairies mouth pierced her heart. It clashed down, crumble to dust. She looked
pathetically at her window. How stupid is she? The Fate already said it. She aren’t allowed to marry
anyone. Alone…. For eternity.
“B-but still….all this time….. all the time that I wasted to wait for him….. it’s for nothing? Useless?..
H-how could he-“ Her words stop as she began to cry. Her ice-cold heart had melted. For the first
time, a warm liquid that called “tears” dripped from her beautiful eyes. It streamed down her cheek,
snaked down the glacier. When it touched the rocks, it turned into shimmering silver little stars. From
that day onward, people called it the Edelweiss. The most beautiful flower that grows in the Alps
