3.3 Install Altera Quartus Prime Lite Edition


Once you’ve gotten your hands on the Quartus Lite setup files, you can start to install them on your
development machine. The process is fairly similar for Windows and Linux, so we describe Windows here.
Make sure you have enough disk space for the installation—a full installation of the Altera tools consumes
over 13GB.
If you’re installing on Windows, you’ll need the 64-bit version of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows
Server 2008, preferably with the latest service pack and security updates. You’ll need administrator access to
install the software, and an Internet connection and web browser to obtain a license. The screenshots of the
Windows installation process are captured on Windows 7.
If you prefer Linux, Altera only supports the use of their products on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.10
and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5. If you aren’t using one of these officially supported distributions, don’t
despair: the tools work pretty well on any modern Linux distribution, you just might need to do some
tweaking to get it to work.

For the individual files method: if you are using Windows, run the file
QuartusLiteSetup-<version>-windows.exe. For the combined file method, you
must unzip the .tar file to extract the installation files. Examples of unzipping
tools: WinZip, 7-zip, or WinRAR. You need to unzip the files on the same
directory and run Setup.bat. Both ways will bring you to the Setup Wizard as in
Figure 3-10. Just click Next.

Click “I accept the agreement” and then click Next (Figure 3-11).

Select the installation location for the giant (>10GB) Quartus Prime Lite edition
and click Next (Figure 3-12).

■■Tips  You can install the Quartus Prime Lite on your external hard drive to save space from your
C:\, although of course this will mean you need your external drive handy if you want to use it.

Check Quartus Prime Lite Edition (Free), MAX 10 FPGA, and ModelSim-Altera
Starter Edition. It should look like Figure 3-13. Click Next to move forward.

This window shows how much space is needed to install the tools and asks for
your approval to install (Figure 3-14) by clicking Next.
